Accumulation of transcripts encoding a lipid transfer-like protein during deformation of nodulation-competent Vigna unguiculata root hairs.

A cDNA library was constructed from RNA of Vigna unguiculata root hairs harvested 1 day and 4 days after inoculation with Rhizobium sp. NGR234. A heterologous probe was used to identify a cDNA clone, the predicted 99-amino-acid sequence of which shares homology with a nonspecific lipid transfer protein (LTP) of Hordeum vulgare. Other characteristics, including an estimated molecular weight of 10.4 kD, an isoelectric point of 8.6, and a signal peptide with a hydrophobic region at the amino-terminal end, are shared by most LTPs. A transcript of 630 nt was found in all tissues tested, except nodules. Levels of mRNA increased in root hairs 24 hr after treatment with Rhizobium sp. NGR234, with different hormones, or with Nod factors. Amounts of transcripts were dependent on the concentration of Nod factors. Accumulation of transcripts during nodule development correlated with root hair deformation, the first visible step in the Rhizobium-legume symbiosis.

The influence of guanoxane on the submaxillary glands of rats. Another model of neurogenic sialoses.

In extracts of submaxillary glands of rats, treated with the guanethidine derivative, guanoxane (Envacar), alpha-amylase activity and protein concentration were measured. Both parameters were also determined for the alpha-isoamylase patterns obtained following electrophoretic separation of gland extracts in polyacrylamide gels. During the first week of drug application, amylase was found to be congested in the glands. Compared with untreated animals, total amylase concentration and amylase activity per unit protein (specific enzyme activity) were significantly increased in extracts and separated isoenzymes, whereas protein concentration remained unaltered. The described changes reverted to normal after continued drug application for 3 weeks. The possibility is suggested that changes in alpha-isoamylase patterns might eventually be employed for clinical characterization of different types of neurogenic sialosis.

[Photocoagulation in retinopathy of prematurity].

Presented are the results of treatment by photocoagulation in children with retinopathy of prematurity treated at the Ophthalmic Department of Martin Luther University in Halle in the period of 1978-1985. This method is contemporary less appreciated than the cryocoagulation although encouraging results have been obtained. A particular difficulty shows to be a precise localization of burns. The application of photocoagulation is however further on a method of choice, limited to cases in which cryoapplication is difficult or impossible.

[Results of prevention of retinal detachment by using photocoagulation].

Prophylactic retinal photocoagulation (in order to prevent the retinal detachment) was performed in the Ophthalmological Department of Medical School in Poznań in the period 1980-1984 and 1987-1988 in 114 eyes, in the Ophthalmological Department in Halle in the period 1982-1983 in 160 eyes. Qualified for coagulation were following changes: holes in the upper quadrants, tears, lattice-like degeneration and vitreoretinal adhesions in the fellow-eye, in high myopia, in aphakia, in cases with subjective symptoms (flashes) or in cases with suspected family history (familial incidence of retinal detachment). In our material the percentage of retinal detachment in the fellow-eye amounted 3.5 p.c. In the Poznań Department in spite of performed prophylactic intervention retinal detachment occurred in 3 eyes, in Halle in 7.

[Gonarthritis, lymphadenopathy and disseminated choroiditis as a primary manifestation of Lyme borreliosis. Case report and discussion of diagnostic possibilities in Lyme borreliosis].

A 26-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital because of bilateral gonarthritis, lymphadenopathy and disseminated chorioiditis as primary manifestation of Lyme borreliosis. Antibody titers against Borrelia burgdorferi did not reach diagnostic levels as determined by an indirect immunofluorescence assay. However, diagnosis was established by the detection of IgG and IgM antibodies in Western blot analysis, and by the demonstration of an enhanced T-cell proliferation to Borrelia burgdorferi in a lymphocyte proliferation assay. This case report indicates that arthritides may already occur in stage II (disseminated infection) of Lyme borreliosis. Therefore, Lyme borreliosis must be considered in patients with chorioiditis and pauciarticular arthritis. In the case of non-diagnostic antibody titers in indirect immunofluorescence tests (or ELISA), Western blot analysis and lymphocyte proliferation assays should be performed in addition.

[Septic arthritis as an initial manifestation of endocarditis].

A 60-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital with high fever and an acute onset of pauciarticular arthritis. Clinical examination and ultrasound imaging of the right knee demonstrated a severe synovitis with a large synovial effusion and a Baker's cyst. Arthrocentesis showed an opaque viscous synovial fluid with a highly elevated white blood cell count. In synovial fluid cultures and in serial blood cultures Aerococcus viridans (Av) was detected. Further examination revealed a mitral valve endocarditis as the origin of the septicemia. This case report is the first one to describe the association of an endocarditis and a septic arthritis due to Av.

In vivo solute extraction by a new polysulphone membrane with low ultrafiltration capacity.

High flux polysulphone (PS600, Fresenius) is a highly biocompatible membrane, but the high ultrafiltration (UF) capacity limits its clinical applications. In the present study a new PS (PS400) with an UF coefficient in the range of cuprophan (CU) but a biocompatibility like high flux PS was evaluated. Dialysis efficiency with PS400 was compared to dialyzers with the same surface, at similar blood flows. Overall extraction of UV-absorbing compounds was higher with PS400 (P less than 0.01). The extraction of the individual compounds, hippuric acid and parahydroxy-hippuric acid was also higher for PS400 (P less than 0.01 resp. less than 0.05). The fall in white blood cells after 15 min. of dialysis was from 6.5 +/- 1.5 to 1.7 +/- 0.6 for CU (-83%), and from 8.6 +/- 1.7 to only 7.4 +/- 1.7 x 10(3) cells/mm3 (-14%) for PS400 (P less than 0.01 versus CU). Ultrafiltration characteristics were similar for both dialyzers.
