Venous aneurysms are extremely rare. They may be congenital or acquired in origin and occasionally related to arteriovenous communications. A 58-year-old man complained of dull left lower quadrant pain and constipation. On physical examination a soft deep mass was palpated. Ultrasonogram and CT scan revealed a cystic formation in the pelvic cavity. Angiograms disclosed an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) at the pelvic floor draining into a large cavity. The patient was successfully managed by intraoperative selective embolization of the AVM and partial resection of a 10.6 x 8 x 6.7 cm venous aneurysm. The histopathologic studies of the wall confirmed a venous structure. Venous dilatation has been reported in high flow vein grafts, blood access V fistulas and rarely, proximal to traumatic AV fistulas of the lower extremities. The etiology of the present case is probably congenital, being to the best of our knowledge, the first case affecting the hypogastric territory, reported in the English literature.

In order to analyse the germ change there have been analysed by way of comparison original articles from the "Zentralblatt für Gynäkologie" of the periods from 1950 to 1959 and 1970 to 1979. In the period from 1970 to 1979 the frequency of demonstrated anaerobic germs increased (12fold), of gram-negative germs as well (from 28% to 32%); in particular that applies to representatives of Enterobacteriaceae (especially E. coli). On the other hand the frequency of the demonstrated Mycobacterium tuberculosis decreased from 35% to 4%. At the same time a change of the character of the infections, partly with serious septic shock conditions, became evident. Information on the attack of Saccharomyces are almost exclusively available in the period from 1970 to 1979. Candida albicans dominates with 23% in the total evidence of mycobacterials. Their are mainly verbal information on an increase of the resistance of germs.
The relationship of nutritional status, self-perceived chewing ability, dental status, and social isolation was examined. Seventy-three ambulatory, elderly (means = 86 years) veterans were studied. Parameters of nutritional status included intakes of protein, carbohydrate, fat, and total calories, and hemoglobin, serum albumin, total lymphocyte count, and height/weight ratio were determined. Dental status was measured, and self-perceived chewing problems and social isolation were assessed by interview. Results showed a significant correlation between perceived chewing problems and diminished protein and total caloric intake and increased carbohydrate intake. No association was found between measured dental status and nutritional status. Social isolation was weakly correlated with greater protein and calorie intake. These results support the contention that the presence of self-perceived chewing problems are more reliable than the quality of the dentition itself as an indicator of altered nutritional status.

In a clinical study alfentanil/etomidat-short-active anaesthesia was used in 150 cats. The anaesthesia progress was compared to usual steroid anaesthesia by using clinical parameters as respiratory and pulse frequency as well as reflexes. Surgical tolerance in both anaesthesia was 6 minutes without and 7 minutes with azaperon premedication. In both anaesthesia excitations occur during waking time. They can be prevented by using a calm waking room or by premedication with azaperon (in subclinical dose of 0.25 mg/kg BW) or diazepam (in the usual dose of 0,2-1 mg/kg BW). Premedication with diazepam is preferred because it has no influence on respiration and circulation and does not intensify the anaesthesia. Indications for alfentanil/etomidat short-active anaesthesia are minor surgery, diagnostic measures and teeth treatment. In addition, alfentanil/etomidat was shown to be suitable for introducing inhalation anaesthesia particularly in old and sick animals.

The resources allocated to a primary and secondary task are reciprocal. Subjects performed a tracking task in which the discrete displacements of the tracking cursor could be used to elicit event-related brain potentials. As the resource demands of the tracking task were increased, potentials elicited by the task-defined events increased in amplitude, whereas those elicited by secondary task auditory stimuli decreased.
As compared to control animals, guinea-pigs to the shaved backs of which a dose of 0.16 ml of a 0.12% solution of PES/100g. of body mass had been applied twice daily for periods of 28 and 90 d, respectively (5 d of application being followed by 2 d without treatment), showed erythema, loss of hair, slower increase in mass, increased heart rate, smaller body mass/kidney mass and body mass/spleen mass ratios, increases in leucocytes, ASAT, ALAT, LDH I and LDH III. In the 28-d test, slight inflammatory symptoms of the liver, kidneys and heart were observed in the experimental animals. These symptoms were more marked in the 90-d test, granulomata in the livers being particularly striking. A pneumonia of moderate to very marked degree is suggestive of the activation of a clinically latent PES infect whereby the inflammatory alterations in the kidneys might be explained by the formation of metastases.
The antimicrobial agent 2-chloro-6-methyl-4-benzylphenol (CMB) can be made from a by-product of herbicide synthesis. CMB is of good to very good effectiveness against dermatophytes and yeast-like moulds and also against Gram-positive cocci. Its activity against Gram-negative rod-shaped bacilli is poor, but the contemplated concentration of 1% will be sufficient for practical purpose. A comparison with commercially available antimicrobial agents gives the impression that its closer examination will be promising. Possibilities of application studies aiming at discovering convenient fields of application are indicated.
Antiseptics are mainly microbiostatic, relatively insoluble compounds, with little ability to penetrate into the skin or the mucous membranes. They can be used prophylactically or therapeutically on various areas of the body surface (skin and the mucous membranes, e.g., of mouth, intestinal-, respiratory-, and urogenital tract). If used in this way, they do not generally cause toxic effects, though sensitization to safe antiseptics may occur. The use of chemotherapeutic agents as antiseptics should be avoided wherever possible, because of the risk of emergence of resistant bacteria; but it would be clearly indicated if this were the only way to save a patient's life. Resistance to antiseptics is less likely to emerge than to antibiotics.

Daily application of 32 mg/kg sodium thiocynate from 1--11th respectively 12th--21st experimental day causes in epinephrectomised guinea pigs at the 26th experimental day an inhibition of cell-mediated immune response (sensitization was induced by intraperitoneal injection of horse serum at the 5th and 7th experimental day). The inhibition of cell-mediated immune response could be demonstrated by means of migration inhibition of spleen cells. Epinephrectomy was performed by operation procedures twice a week. Gluco- and mineralocorticoids were applied supplementary. -- Also other proved thiocyanates respectively compounds with thiocyanate groups such as potassium thiocyanate, ammonium thiocyanate and d,1-2-imino-3.4-dimethyl-5-phenyl-thiacolidinhydrothiocyanate showed the same effect. The results are only pointed out in intact animals, but distinct in epinephrectomised guinea pigs. Finally a significant weaker effect, but of the same kind was observed by potassium- and sodium iodate. Every used dose of prednisolone and cyclophosphamide suppress the migration inhibition. The influence of 2-iminothiacolidin-4-carbon acid and desoxycorticosteronacetat on the migration inhibition is different and depends on the antigen dose applied for sensitization. -- Simulated daily injections undertaken in form of stitches and application of aqua destillata are inefficacious.
