Apolipoprotein E genotypes in sporadic early and late-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Recent data have demonstrated that presence of apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon *4 allele is a major risk factor of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We determined the APOE genotypes in 64 patients with sporadic probable AD and 43 non-demented aged controls selected from Poznań region and the western part of Poland using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. We confirmed a strong correlation of the APOE epsilon *4 allele with sporadic late-onset AD. In contrast to many previous reports we did not found an association between the APOE epsilon *4 allele and sporadic early-onset AD.

Genetic variability of apolipoprotein E in a Polish population.

Apolipoprotein E (apoE, protein; APOE, gene) is a component of very low density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein and plays an important role in lipoprotein metabolism. There are three common alleles of APOE (*2, *3, and *4), which encode the E2, E3, and E4 isoforms of the protein. Distribution of apoE isoforms shows marked variation among various ethnic groups. Direct phenotyping of human APOE in plasma was used to estimate APOE allele frequencies in 137 unrelated blood donors from 3 regions of Poland. The relative frequencies observed for the APOE*2, APOE*3, and APOE*4 alleles were 0.055, 0.839, and 0.106, respectively. The data have been compared with data found in other population groups. The frequency of the APOE*2 allele in Poles was among the lowest in Europe.

Association between the PI*M3 allele of alpha 1-antitrypsin and Alzheimer's disease? A preliminary report.

The deposition of beta A4-amyloid in senile plaques in the brain and small cerebral vessels is one of the pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Serine protease inhibitors (serpins) such as alpha 1-antitrypsin and alpha 1-antichymotrypsin have been found to be associated with beta-amyloid deposits; interest in their role in the pathogenesis of AD has therefore recently increased. We have analyzed alpha 1-antitrypsin phenotypes in a sample of 29 Polish patients with probable Alzheimer's disease. We have found an increased frequency of the PI*M3 allele (0.1897) in patients in comparison with the general population control (0.0563).

[Methods of gonad protection against effects of chemotherapy].

Together with increasing therapeutic effectiveness neoplastic diseases, the interest in late consequences of adverse effects of chemotherapy is increasing. Such problems include disturbances of gonad function. Treatment of neoplastic diseases leads frequently to infertility and hormonal disturbances resulting from damages to the gonads. Many attempts have been undertaken at protection of the gonads against unfavourable action of drugs. They are based mainly on the "interruption" of the hypothalamo-hypophyseo-gonadal axis in order to make the gonads quiescent. Other direction includes the influence on the metabolism of oncological drugs aimed at inhibition of the development of gonadotoxic derivatives. Another method includes appropriate choice of cytostatics: antimetabolites exert weaker unfavourable action on the gonads than alkylating drugs. The problem of gonad protection remains open. Searching is necessary for drugs without gonadotoxic action and effective methods of protection.

Alpha-1-antitrypsin (PI) subtypes in Russians and Poles.

alpha-1-antitrypsin (PI) subtypes were studied in Poles and Russians. The frequencies of the PI alleles were similar in the two populations, with the exception of the Z allele, whose frequency was significantly lower in Poles. The M3 allele frequency, which is highly heterogeneous in European populations, has medium frequencies in Poles and Russians.

The quality of natural environment and mortality (based on the example of major cities in Poland).

"The paper presents the results of [a] study on the relationship between environmental degeneration and mortality in major cities of Poland [during the 1980s].... The authors examine 22 major cities differed according to the degree of pollution.... The analysis employs...life tables and methods of multiple regression.... The influence of the natural environment quality on mortality is diversified according to sex and age but in general, the interdependence is not strong."

Bacterial microflora in Stichococcus bacillaris culture in nitrogenous-organic wastewaters.

The quantitative and qualitative composition of the population of heterotrophic bacteria accompanying Stichococcus bacillaris in culture in non-sterile nitrogenous-organic wastewater was examined. During 5 days of incubation the total number of bacteria did not show any marked changes and averaged 4 X 10(6) cells per ml. Twenty per cent of the isolated bacterial strains were gram-positive. Gram-negative rods were dominated by Enterobacteriaceae (40%) and Pseudomonas (17%).

Application of atomic absorption spectrometry for the study of the subretinal fluid.

A method of determining the inorganic constituents of the subretinal fluid using atomic absorption spectrometry is presented. Due to the small volumes available of the samples, the addition of diluents was necessary in order to be able to carry out an analysis of the elements at the most sensitive wavelength in the optimal range of the calibration curve. Details concerning standard solutions, laboratory equipment, sample preparation, precision and accuracy are also considered.

Some inorganic constituents of the subretinal fluid.

The inorganic constituents of the subretinal fluid (SRF) were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometry. Four main elements (Na, K, Ca, Mg) were determined in 41 samples; Cu was determined in 36 samples and Zn in 24 samples. The results are presented graphically, taking into account the concentrations of each element in the SRF and the number of cases. In 9 cases, the concentrations of the inorganic elements were also determined in blood serum; it was established that the SRF is richer in Mg than blood serum and poorer in the other elements. No correlation was found between the concentration of the inorganic elements in the SRF and the clinical picture of retinal detachment.
