Variations at the PGM1, GOTm, GOTs, and EsD loci were studied in placental samples from Northern Greece. The gene frequencies of GOTm and GOTs were found to be comparable with frequencies reported in other Caucasian populations. The frequencies of the EsD and PGMa11 alleles, however, were lower in Northern Greece than in other European populations.
Gene frequency data of several genetic markers in 9 Mediterranean countries as well as in the 3 major human races were collected from the literature. Using these data the genetic distances between the inhabitants of the 9 countries and the 3 human races were determined. Algerians are closer to Negroids, while the other Mediterraneans are closer to Caucasoids.
The genetic polymorphism of two salivary enzymes (esterase and alpha-amylase) was studied in individuals from eight districts of Greece. The pooled gene frequencies were: SetS = 0.63, SetF = 0.37, AMY1 = 0.87, AMY2 = 0.10, AMY3 = 0.02, and AMY4 = 0.01. There was no intrapopulation heterogeneity, while there was a significant difference between the Greeks and the few other European populations studied.
