[Clinico-immunologic characteristics of mite-borne bronchial asthma].

The authors describe clinicoimmunological features of bronchial asthma caused by Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. This type of asthma usually afflicts young persons, its course is mild. The main symptoms are dyspnea, rhinitis and conjunctivitis. In patients not going to the country the appearance of symptoms is of seasonal nature. Asthmatic attacks are usually nocturnal, especially in bedrooms with old bedclothes. Lingering reactions with a high titer of complement-binding antibodies to mite and marked skin tests to the Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus allergen are noted.

[Allergenic activity of mites of the genus Dermatophagoides].

The allergenic activities of the laboratory batches of D. farinae allergens have been studied by the methods of indirect mast-cell degranulation, neuroglial cytocrit, electrophoretic mobility changes. D. farinae allergens have been shown to possess specific activity. The method of changes in the electrophoretic mobility of sheep red blood cells has demonstrated that D. pteronyssimus and D. farinae allergens possess common allergenic properties.

[Effect of mite allergens on the electrophoretic mobility of guinea pig lymphocytes].

The use of the method of electrophoretic mobility measurement has made it possible to demonstrate that Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae allergens are species-specific and possess common antigenic properties. The allergenic properties of D. pteronyssinus allergens are more pronounced than those of D. farinae allergens.

[Comparative immunological characteristics of Daphnia allergens].

Materials on the study of Daphnia allergens are presented. Daphnia allergens have been shown to possess considerable sensitizing properties. The optimum method for the preparation of the allergen has been selected. The method of measuring the electrophoretic mobility of cells with a view to the evaluation of the specific activity of Daphnia allergen is proposed.

[Detection of mite antigens in house dust in Moscow].

The acarological+ study of dust samples from the homes of allergic patients and normal persons in Moscow mite antigens were detected, respectively, in 66.7% and 38.1% of homes. The indirect mast cell degranulation test and the brain gliacyte volume change test in white rats gave similar results. The occurrence of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus was approximately twice as great of D. farinae, and the numerical prevalence of the former species over the latter one was 1.3-fold. Dermatophagoides mites occurred in the homes of allergic patients 1.8-2.3 times as frequently as in the homes of normal persons.

[Effect of tomicide and the cell wall biopolymers of Streptococcus sp. Thom-1606 on mast cell degranulation].

The influence of tomicide and biopolymers obtained from the cell wall of Streptococcus sp. TOM-1606 on the degranulation of mast cells was studied. Among the biopolymers of the streptococcal cell-wall polysaccharide was shown to induce the highest destruction of mast cells (14.84 +/- 6.8%). The alteration of mast cells under the effect of peptidoglycan and teichoic acid was mildly positive (11.85 +/- 5.8% and 12.1 +/- 6.2%). At the same time the destruction induced by the complex of noninfectious allergen and the patient's serum was 33.2 +/- 3.8% respectively. Other preparations induced destruction on the level of spontaneous degranulation. The study of the action of the allergen-antibody complex in combination with tomicide and biopolymers obtained from the cell wall of Streptococcus sp. TOM-1606 revealed a decrease in the rate of mast cell degranulation almost to the background level (24.7 +/- 0.55% for the allergen-antibody complex and 8.4 +/- 4.2% to 11.8 +/- 5.3% for streptococcal biopolymers).

[Mites in house dust and human allergoses].

The literary data on the study of the house-dust mites during the period from 1864 till 1983 are given. The methods of the house dust samples collection in flats and the methods of the house-dust mites isolation from the house dust are evaluated. The house-dust mites fauna including more than 130 species is described. The synantropic mites-pyroglyphides are the main part of the fauna, the stored products mites and predatory cheyletid and gamasid mites occur regularly. The rest part of the fauna consists of the different mites got into house by chance. The literary data on the influence of temperature and relative humidity on the development and growth of the mite population are given. The house-dust mites feeding and digestion processes bearing relation to the formation of the mite allergen are reviewed. The original data complete the literary data on the fauna and distribution of the house-dust mites in Moscow.

[Comparative iodination of a series of allergens].

The study of 27 allergens, carried out with the use of the standard technique of chloramine iodination by Hunter's method, revealed that the biological properties of the allergens were not essentially related to their capacity for binding 125I, this capacity being, on the whole, low. The blood sera of patients with allergic diseases were found to be no different from the blood sera of healthy persons in their capacity for binding 125I.

[Immunochemical and acarological study of mites].

The data derived in the study of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus by microscopic and immunological assays (double radial immunodiffusion in 2 modifications and indirect rat mast cell degranulation) are provided. The immunochemical assays permitting the detection of mites in 93.3% of cases have been shown to compare very favourably with the microscopic techniques that make it possible to detect mites only in 41.7% of cases.

[Fractional composition of the allergens from cereals].

The composition of cereal allergens was studied and the specific activity of the fractions isolated from these allergens was determined. Four protein fractions were obtained from wheat flour by the method of salting out. None of the fractions thus obtained exceeded the whole wheat allergen in specific activity as determined in the indirect mast-cell degranulation (IMCD) test. Three fractions were isolated by fractionation through Sephadex G-75. Of these, the first fraction possessed better physical properties, and its specific activity exceeded that of the initial allergen in the IMCD test.

[Comparative evaluation of the specific activity of different types of allergens from Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus mites].

The specific activity of different kinds of allergens prepared from dermatophagoid mites has been studied by the method of the indirect mast cell degranulation and the method of changing the volume of cerebral glial cells in patients with the atopic form of bronchial asthma. In cases of sensitization to mites the presence of reagin and precipitin antibodies has been revealed. Allergens prepared from the mite medium and directly from mites have been found to possess almost the same specific activity. Changes in the volume of glial cells have been found to serve as a sensitive test revealing the specific activity of mite allergens.

[Role of the protein fraction of Bordetella pertussis in inducing experimental allergic encephalomyelitis].

B. pertussis protein fraction obtained by precipitation with trichloroacetic acid (TCA) stimulated the development of clinically and histologically pronounced experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) in guinea pigs when introduced together with a heterologous cerebral antigen, the two compounds forming an encephalitogenic mixture. The adjuvant activity of the TCA-precipitated fraction depended on its dose. The sera of the animals with EAE induced by the encephalitogenic mixture containing B. pertussis cells or TCA-precipitated fraction showed a cytopathogenic effect in the monolayer culture of newborn rat cerebellum cells. The cytopathogenic effect was more pronounced in the sera obtained at the period of the development of the clinical symptoms of the disease (days 14-18), while the cytotoxic effect of the sera obtained on day 30 after immunization decreased irrespective of the manifestations of EAE, this decrease being in correlation with the dose of the TCA-precipitated fraction in the encephalitogenic mixture.

[Experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in guinea pigs caused by meningococci].

The sensitization of guinea-pigs with the mixture of meningococci and heterologous-cerebral tissue commonly induces the development of the typical clinical and pathomorphological picture of allergic encephalomyelitis. Unlike Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other acid-resistant bacterial and much like Bordetella pertussis, meningococci are capable of inducing allergic encephalomyelitis when introduced in mixture with oil without cerebral tissue. The vaccinal strain induces allergic encephalomyelitis with a more moderate course of the disease.

[Significance of cytotoxic anti-brain antibodies in the blood in infantile cerebral palsy].

The results of examining the blood serum of 75 children aged up to 2 years suffering from infantile cerebral paralysis of various gravity, as well as the results of analogous examinations of 21 healthy children are presented. Use was made of the immunological tests of glia migration inhibition, and of complement fixation. It was shown that the results of both tests characterized the gravity of the disease. The glia migration inhibition tests (performed with the use of brain antigen) has made it possible to detect cytotoxic anticerebral antibodies in children with a mild, moderate, and grave degrees of the disease much more often than the complement fixation test. The rise of the titres of those antibodies was found to be in a certain correlation with the disease gravity and outcome. The data obtained were compared with the results of morphological examinations of the brain of serum-positive children. Prospects of using the glia migration inhibition test in combinations with clinical and morphological examinations for further studies of the pathogenesis of the infantile cerebral paralysis are discussed.

[Glial migration inhibition test in multiple sclerosis patients and its changes during treatment with immunosuppressants].

Results of examining the blood serum of 90 patients with disseminated sclerosis, 94 patients with other nervous diseases, and 20 healthy subjects using the glia migration inhibition test are presented. It is shown that the index of the glia migration inhibition (IGMI) gets higher during exacerbation of the disseminated sclerosis and drops in cases of relative stabilization of the clinical manifestations and remission. In the course of treatment with immunodepressants, such as, prednisolone (alone, or in combination with cyclophosphan) and antilymphocytic immunoglobulin, the IGMI falls down. Possible use of the IGMI for determining the indications for the immunodepressant therapy and for solving differential diagnostic and therapy control problems is discussed.
