Blood pressure measurements were recorded in 95% of the men and 97% of the women aged 30 to 59 years in a small Israeli village populated by Jews of Kurdish origin and in which a high incidence of toxemia of pregnancy was previously observed. The prevalence of hypertension in the men, as well as in the women, was significantly higher in all age groups studied than in a sample of the general population. These findings support the hypothesis that toxemia of pregnancy is an expression of a preexisting hypertensive state rather than an etiological factor in the development of later hypertension in women.
Germinated spores of Bacillus subtilis were incubated in outgrowth medium and tested periodically for capacity to sporulate when suspended in sporulation medium. Concurrent measurements were made of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) content and numbers of cell division septa and nucleoids. Sporulation potential is shown to reach a peak at about 110 min at which time the chromosomes are probably well into the second round of replication. Experiments with nalidixic acid show that sporulation potential can be generated in the outgrowth medium even when DNA synthesis is largely prevented. Further experiments show that nalidixic acid apparently does not prevent the formation of DNA initiation complexes, which can subsequently function after resuspension in the sporulation medium. The results support those previously obtained with a temperature-sensitive DNA mutant which indicated that sporulation could only be induced at a specific stage of chromosome replication, and then only if the cells are in a state of nutritional "step-down".
The isolation and partial characterization of a marine bacteriophage attacking a strain of luminous bacteria is described, including some physical, biological, and genetic properties. It is a DNA phage of density of 1.52 with a long flexible tail and an apparently icosohedral head. With respect to stability in suspension, it has a rather specific requirement for the sodium ion in high concentration; it is further stabilized by the addition of calcium and magnesium ions. These same ions are likewise all required for both good plating efficiency and plaque uniformity. Although it goes through a typical lytic growth cycle (about 45 min), with a burst size of 100, and no stable lysogens have been isolated, it is nevertheless a transducing phage specifically for the tryptophan region, transducing several, but not all, independently isolated Trp(-) auxotrophs to protrophy. No other auxotrophs of a variety of amino acids were transduced by this phage to prototrophy. Phage infection does not change the normal expression of the luminescent system, and light remains at near normal levels until cell lysis occurs.

Heat activation of bacterial spores at low pH was investigated in detail. Unlike activation of spores in distilled water at a neutral pH, activation at low pH involves two superimposed processes: enhanced activation and death. Low-pH-activated spores failed to germinate in d-alanine, in contrast to spores activated at neutral pH, owing to the abolition of alanine-racemase activity. Morphological and permeability changes such as release and partial disruption of spores were dipicolinic acid-observed during low-pH activation. The kinetics pattern of low-pH activation, as well as the change in properties of the spores thereafter, suggest that the mechanism of low-pH activation differs from that of other kinds of heat-activation.

Kinetic and thermodynamic properties of red cell lithium (Li) efflux were examined in patients with essential hypertension; the maximal rate of Li efflux as affected by temperature was measured at the range of 12 degrees to 42 degrees C. Fifty-two patients with essential hypertension and 22 normotensives were studied. The mean Li efflux, both into sodium (Na) medium and Li-Na countertransport, was higher in hypertensive than in normotensive persons, but the distinction between the two groups was limited by extended scatter and overlap. The distinction could be markedly improved by determining the effect of temperature on Li efflux. While all the normotensives exhibited Arrhenius plots of Li efflux with a change in slope ("break") around 30 degrees C, the corresponding "break" for most (75%) of the hypertensives was about 20 degrees C. Consideration of both the rate and the temperature dependence of Li efflux further improved the differentiation of hypertensive patients. Analysis of normotensive offspring of hypertensives and of patients with secondary hypertension indicates that the temperature dependence of Li efflux may serve as a genetic marker for essential hypertension.
