Widespread cutaneous Crohn's disease presenting in childhood.

Cutaneous lesions containing Crohn's granulomata are rare and tend to occur in submammary or abdominal wall skin folds when they are to be found (1). Crohn's disease of the skin in nonflexural locations has been reported (2,3) although not in children. We report a 5-year-old girl with extensive colonic Crohn's disease, who at presentation was noted to have a generalised erythematous papular rash which histologically showed typical noncaseating granulomata.

Medullary ray nodule of the kidney.

In this short report we describe three preterm infants who died within the first 8 months of life (corrected age). All presented similar histological features within the kidney, showing medullary ray nodules composed of tubules lined by low columnar epithelium with clear cytoplasm. The immunohistochemical profile of these lesions was identical and suggested origin from distal convoluted tubule or collecting duct. The aim of this report is to draw attention to this entity and to suggest a possible origin of these lesions.

Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia↗

Involvement of chromosomes 1 and 17 in a case of neuroblastoma.

We report here the cytogenetic analysis of a neuroblastoma from a 6-month-old male. Both conventional GTG banded analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization were performed. The tumour was found to have a der(17)t(1;17)(p34;q21).

Pediatric oncology and hematology in Manchester, England.

The Manchester pediatric oncology unit is the third largest unit in the United Kingdom, with approximately 120 new referred cases per annum (10% of the U.K. total). Research activities include a gene therapy program, peripheral blood stem cell studies, the genetic epidemiology of childhood cancer, late-effects research (growth, body composition, pulmonary, quality of life), psychosocial studies, and clinical trial organization. Both the clinical oncology service and research activities involve close team coordination and collaboration with scientists both within and outside Manchester. A comprehensive pediatric hematology service is provided. The unit contains the second largest children's hemophilia service in the United Kingdom, serving 200 patients with congenital blood disorders. Twenty-five bone marrow transplants are performed each year (allogeneic, unrelated donor, autologous, and peripheral stem cell) for malignant and nonmalignant disorders. These activities are closely related to local, national, and international research groups.
