The study examines differential leucocyte counts in blood of asbestos miners and quarriers identified during the course of a community health survey comprising 693 men over 25 years of age of all occupations. Subjects in the asbestos mining and quarrying occupational groups were present in the lowest total leucocyte quintile in significantly greater numbers than expected on the basis of a age-specific uniform leucocyte distribution based upon the total population of male workers. This relative leucopenia was not seen in their wives nor in any of the 22 other major occupational groups examined after their leucocyte counts were adjusted for age and sex variations.

Plasma gastrin and pepsinogen were measured at weekly intervals in 38 pigs from weaning at about four weeks of age until slaughter at 24 weeks. Plasma gastrin was 104 +/- 6.2, 85 +/- 11.2, 126 +/- 11.67 mol per litre in the pigs aged four, five and six weeks and 43 +/- 2.57, 31 +/- 2.29, 17 +/- 0.87 mol per litre when they were 21, 22 and 23 weeks old. Sixteen of the pigs had apparently normal stomachs, the remainder had some degree of epithelial hyperplasia and, or, ulceration of the pars oesophagea of the stomach. No differences were detected between plasma gastrin and plasma pepsinogen in pigs with normal stomachs and those showing evidence of epithelial hyperplasia or ulceration of the pars oesophagea. If ulcers of this region arise from hypersecretion of gastric acid some factor(s) other than gastrin appear to be involved. The possibility is discussed that the progressive decline in plasma gastrin is part of the maturation process.
Nineteen (22.9%) of 83 sera collected before vaccination from adult volunteers aged 21-64 years were without neutralizing antibody to poliomyelitis at levels of 0.15 i.u./ml for types I and II and 0.1 i.u./ml for type III. Some correlations were found between the history of previous vaccination and the presence of antibody but these were not well defined. Vaccination with a single dose of trivalent oral polio vaccine elicited fourfold or greater antibody responses to one or more poliomyelitis types in 53 (63.9%) volunteers, the percentage antibody resposnes being inversely related to the titre of antibody present before vaccination. Types I, II or III poliomyelitis virus were recovered from 76.8% of faecal samples collected 1 week after vaccination. The percentage recovery progressively declined thereafter until virus was recovered from 10.5% of samples collected 6 weeks after vaccination. Type for type, the titres and percentages of antibody responses and virus shedding in faeces were similar following trivalent oral poliomyelitis vaccines whether prepared in monkey or human diploid cell substrates. Some change in reproductive capacity temperature (r.c.t./40) marker was found in faecal isolates from volunteers vaccinated with monkey kidney and human diploid grown vaccines but no change in 'd' marker was found.
A detailed clinical evaluation of the diff3 system for examining peripheral blood smears was performed over a six-month period in a service hematology laboratory in a large teaching hospital. The diff3 automatically classifies 11 categories of nucleated cells; qualitatively evaluates erythrocyte size, shape, and color; estimates platelet and leukocyte count; and generates a quantitative estimate of platelet number. The analyzer contains a system for signaling abnormal or suspicious slides for technologist review. As many as 14 slides can be processed in sequence without operator attendance. Throughput averages 33 slides/hour in no review mode. The analyzer produced similar in-run and day-to-day precision when examining a wide variety of blood smears. Morphologic evaluation of nucleated and non-nucleated blood cells correlated with that of technologists. The diff3's normal range compared closely with that obtained by senior technologists examining conventional smears. Band counts, while somewhat higher, did not lead to judgement errors in left-shift direction. The diff3's sensitivity to recognizing abnormal smears was virtually identical to that of technologists with a false-positive level only slightly greater than theirs; diff3's false negatives were equal in frequency to those experienced by technologists.
A 25-year-old man with rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis developed an autoantibody with anti-M specificity following haemodialysis and renal transplantation. The patient's red cells typed as MN. The antibody was an IgM globulin which displayed marked dosage effect and variable pH dependence. The thermal range of reactivity extended to 37 degrees C. The stimulus for the production of the antibody is uncertain.

Six serum constituents known to vary with renal function were analyzed in a probability sample of 500 persons 55 years and over, and their sex trends compared to other ages. Creatinine, BUN and alkaline phosphatase are elevated in this group whereas calcium is low and phosphorus strikingly so, especially in males. A possible explanation lies in age-related renal parenchymal changes which influence both glomerular filtration and tubular functions in ways that differ from true renal disease. These results have directed implications for geriatric diagnosis and therapy.

We describe a method for the bichromatic determination of total bilirubin with a CentrifiChem 400 centrifugal analyzer with the Boehringer DPD kit. After reading the blank at 620 nm, we read the test at 550 nm. Because only one rotor is required, the analytical time for bilirubin estimations is halved. The proposed method is no more prone to interference by hemoglobin or turbidity than a conventional approach or a reference continuous-flow method and has performed well over several months of routine use.

We studied the function of fetal thymocytes, derived from thymus progenitor cells of 14-day-old fetuses in an organ culture system, in an in vitro humoral immune response. The unprimed cultured fetal thymocytes suppressed the T-dependent primary immune response to adult syngeneic spleen cells against sheep red blood cells, but failed to suppress the response against the T-independent antigen NIP-POL [4(hydroxy-3-iodo-5-nitrophenyl)acetyl-coupled polymerized flagellin]. The suppression was abolished by anti-Thy-1 serum and complement treatment. Using a differential killing procedure, the suppressor cells were characterized as "low" Thy-1 cells. In addition, they were resistant to hydrocortisone. Suppression could only be achieved when the cultured fetal thymocytes were added during the first 48 h of culture, suggesting that their action occurred during the induction phase of the response. The implications of the high frequency of suppressor cells during fetal life are discussed.
