Heliotherapy of pityriasis lichenoides chronica.

Fifteen patients with pityriasis lichenoides chronica (parapsoriasis guttata) were treated with sunlight irradiation during the summer months at seaside resorts under the supervision of the authors. Complete clearing occurred in 1 of the patients, almost complete clearing in 8, definte improvement in 4, temporary clearing in 2. All patients responded beneficially and no worsening was noted in these 15 cases. In an additional six cases who were instructed to expose themselves to sunlight similar results were obtained.

Exfoliative dermatitis from Chinese herbs (decoction)--an example of purely epidermal contact-type hypersensitivity to ingested medicines.

A patient, aged 78, with exfoliative dermatitis due to the ingestion of Chinese herbs (decoction) was presented. Provocative medication showed that he was sensitive to 4 composite materials (Radix angelicae acutilobae, Rhizoma zingiberis, Radix paeoniae and Radix glycyrrhizae). Patch tests were positive to each of these materials while the intradermal test was negative. These results indicate that systemic contact-type hypersensitivity to the ingested medicines is involved in evoking the exfoliative dermatitis lesion and that, in addition, purely epidermal contact sensitivity as defined by S. Epstein and Baer plays an important role.

Langerhans cells in human apocrine ducts.

Electron microscopic observations revealed for the first time a few number of Langerhans cells within the intradermal apocrine duct of the normal human axillary skin. In many respects the fine structural features of Langerhans cells were noted to be identical with those described in the epidermis. Our present results suggest that Langerhans cells could be a stable and constant cellular constituent for the normal apocrine ducts. The significance of this presence of Langerhans cells remains to be investigated.

Effect of serum of mycosis fungoides patients on lymphocyte transformation.

In vitro transformation of peripheral lymphocytes by PHA was usually impaired in mycosis fungoides patients in the infiltrative plaque and tumor stages, while not being significantly impaired in the premycotic stage. A serum factor, reducing transformation by PHA, was demonstrated in 2 of 5 patients in the premycotic stage as well as in 2 and probably 3 of 4 patients in the infiltrative plaque or tumor stage. This serum factor affected both autologous (mycosis fungoides) and normal lymphocytes. The factor tended to be present in patients whose lymphocytes were impaired rather than in those whose lymphocytes were not significantly impaired. The degree of the reduction by mycosis fungoides serum seemed to correlate with the serum concentration of gamma-globulin rather than that of alpha2-globulin. The possible nature and clinical significance of this factor are discussed.

[Kimura's disease. Demonstration of the disease and its differential diagnosis].

From several own cases and case-reports from the literature the clinical and histopathological picture of Kimura's disease and its etiopathogenesis are reported. The recently reported "subcutaneous angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia" of Wells and Whimsper corresponds to the solitary or localized variant of Kimura's disease. The differential diagnosis of recently described analogous diseases is considered.
