Studies on phagocytosis in leukemia II. Phagocytic and bactericidal activities of leukocytes and separated granulocytes of the peripheral blood in acute leukemia.

Phagocytic and intracellular killing activities for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli strains were studies in the 64 cases of acute leukemia. Leukocyte preparations i. e. concentrated white cells in the same proportions as in the patient's peripheral blood (27 cases) and separated granulocytes (35 cases) were used; the control groups consisted of 40 healthy subjects, each. In both methods, a similar defect in the ingesting and intracellular killing capacities could be demonstrated. However, the impairment of phagocytosis was greater in separated granulocytes, and intracellular killing activity, in the leukocyte preparations. The bactericidal activity of phagocytes showed a greater defect than that of phagocytosis. Phagocytosis and intracellular killing of S. aureus strain proceeded less efficiently as compared with E. coli. During the treatment of leukemia an improvement in the phagocytic parameters could be seen in comparison with pretreatment values. Cytostatics did however, exert an adverse effect on the bactericidal activity of granulocytes, when examinations were made on days of their administration.

[Successful embolectomy of the superior mesenteric artery].

Successful embolectomy of the superior mesenteric artery in a 75-year-old man is reported. The decisive points in early diagnosis are discussed and the specific diagnostic methods for the correct decision are presented. The fulminant evolution of the disease leaves little time in which to decide. Early embolectomy brings about complete cure. It is a life-saving operation and there are no contraindications.

[A case of Osler-Rendu disease with simultaneous thrombopenia and a factor VIII inhibitor].

Long-term determinations of haemostasis factors in a case of Osler's telangiectasia revealed the temporarily simultaneous existance of periods of thrombocytopenia, a decrease of prothrombine and a reduction of the fibrinogen and plasminogen level. These findings considered as signs of consumption coagulopathy coincided with an increased bleeding tendency of the patient. The correlation existing between the clinical symptoms and the observed disorders of coagulation may possibly be explained by the appearance of an intravascular coagulation during the late period of the haemorrhagic diathesis, which could be proved by the simultaneous increase of fibrinogen degradation products. Moreover, the patient's plasma was capable of strongly inhibiting factor VIII of a normal plasma. The possible influence of plasmatic disorders of coagulation which are caused by secondary reasons on the clinical picture of a haemorrhagic diathesis primarily based on vascular conditions is discussed.

[Phagocytic ability of blast cells in acute leukemia].

In 31 cases of acute leukaemia in adults the ability of leukaemic cells to phagocytize latex was investigated. This ability was confirmed in nearly all cases of monocytic and myelomonocytic leukaemia, in over 1/3 of cases of myeloblastic leukaemia and in one out of 9 cases of lymphoblastic leukaemia.
