Population and territory stability of the Lemur catta at Berenty, Madagascar.

Several Lemur catta troops at Berenty, Madagascar have been censused repeatedly since 1963. In 1972, the entire reserve was censused. A recensus in 1975 showed that although some minor changes have occurred in the number of animals in individual troops, the population of the reserve as a whole, the core areas of the lemurs' territories, and their home range boundaries have all remained stable ever since the first complete census 3 years earlier.

[Benign synovialoma of knee in children (author's transl)].

The authors report 2 cases of benign synovialoma of knee in children. After studying the clinical and radiological symptomatology, they insist on the anatomical pathological criteria which are the only specific ones. However, this benign affection takes on a serious complexion, in the diffuse forms, on account of the incomplete and impairing nature of an exclusively surgical treatment.

[Pseudo-sarcomatous osteomyilitis in the child (author's transl)].

The authors report three unusual cases of paediatric osteomyelitis resembling a lytic or mixed osteosarcoma. The severity of the radiological lesions is such that only a diagnostic approach is possible before surgical biopsy. Under the effects of treatment, osteolysis resolved in two cases by bone eburnation in two cases and pandiaphyseal sequestration in one case. These three cases were collected in less than a year. Thus osteomyelitis is currently adding new diagnostic traps in bone pathology in children.

Quantitation of isoprenaline-induced changes in the ventricular myocardium.

Small doses of isoprenaline sulphate given intermittently produce a characteristic cardiopathy consisting of subendocardial scarring and myocardial hypertrophy. A morphometric technique was successfully applied to the quantitation of these changes. This technique improves the use of the isoprenaline model for the study of cardiac necrosis as statistical analysis can be applied and objective comparisons made. No hypertrophy was seen in the absence of myocardial necrosis which suggests that it is at least in part compensatory.

Lemur social behavior and primate intelligence.

Our human intellect has resulted from an enormous leap in capacity above the level of monkeys and apes. Earlier, though, Old and New World monkeys' intelligence outdistanced that of other mammals, including the prosimian primates. This first great advance in intelligence probably was selected through interspecific competition on the large continents. However, even at this early stage, primate social life provided the evolutionary context of primate intelligence. Two arguments support this conclusion. One is ontogenetic: modern monkeys learn so much of their social behavior, and learn their behavior toward food and toward other species through social example. The second is phylogenetic: some prosimians, the social lemurs, have evolved the usual primate type of society and social learning without the capacity to manipulate objects as monkeys do. It thus seems likely that the rudiments of primate society preceded the growth of primate intelligence, made it possible, and determined its nature.
