Testing for linkage under robust genetic models.

Robust genetic models are used to assess linkage between a quantitative trait and genetic variation at a specific locus using allele-sharing data. Little is known about the relative performance of different possible significance tests under these models. Under the robust variance components model approach there are several alternatives: standard Wald and likelihood ratio tests, a quasilikelihood Wald test, and a Monte Carlo test. This paper reports on the relative performance (significance level and power) of the robust sibling pair test and the different alternatives under the robust variance components model. Simulations show that (1) for a fixed sample size of nuclear families, the variance components model approach is more powerful than the robust sibling pair approach; (2) when the number of nuclear families is at least approximately 100 and heritability at the trait locus is moderate to high (>0.20) all tests based on the variance components model are equally effective; (3) when the number of nuclear families is less than approximately 100 or heritability at the trait locus is low (<0. 20), on balance, the Monte Carlo test provides the best power and is the most valid. The different testing procedures are applied to determine which are able to detect the known association between low density lipoprotein cholesterol and the common genotypes at the locus encoding apolipoprotein E. Results from this application show that the robust sibling pair method may be more effective in practice than that indicated by simulations.

[Post diameter optimal design of over dentures attachment].

OBJECTIVE: The effect of the post diameter design of over dentures attachment on the strss distribution of pulpless dentine was investigated in this study. METHODS: The optimal post diameter design was computed with a finite element method and analyzed with graphic method. RESULTS: The changes between the dentine stress value and the post diameter was parabola relationship. The optimal diameter of attachment post was 1.55 mm for this study model. The dentine thickness which retained above apical foramen 4 mm was 0.83 mm. CONCLUSION: This investigation provides a series of valuable parameters for making a post diameter optimal design of over dentures attachment.

[The three-dimensional analysis of mandibular overdenture supported by implants].

In recent decade, the treatment in which two or four implants are placed in an edentulous patient to support an overdenture has been more effective and safe, and the retention and stability of overdenture have been improved by the use of attachments fabricated on implant abutments. This study aimed to investigate the supporting tissue stress distributions of implant-overdenture with a 3-D finite element model built by CT scan and CAD technology when various attachments and loads were used respectively. The results demonstrated that the establishment of the three-dimensional finite element model with CT scan and CAD technique had saved time and effort, and it did not damage the experiment model. The tissue structure was quite distinct in imaging. In terms of the stress distribution of bone tissue in the overdenture supported by implant, there was a difference between bar attachment and stud attachment. However, such a difference was minor as compared with the difference caused by the bite force direction. The stress value of cortical bone around abutment with 20 degree oblique force was 2.2-3 times that with vertical force. Therefore, to reduce high stress peaks, attention must be paid to the direction of the bite force, as this variable is much more important than the design of superstructure.

[Fabrication and use of two kinds of overdenture attachments].

The authors introduced the fabrication of stud attachment and bar attachment used to increase the stability and retention of overdenture. During two years' periods, the results of the clinical practice indicated: the retention of overdenture was increased and patients' masticator function was improved when attachments were used, and then the fabrications of two kinds of attachments were simple and value of attachments is cheap. The technique was popularized and used easily.

[Effect of stud attachment post design on dentin stress distribution].

The shape design of attachment post is crucial factors influencing post retention and stress distribution to the dentin. By means of CAD and FEA, the present study investigated the effects of the shape designs of attachment posts on the stress distribution in dentin. The results indicated that the taper post had wedging effects on the dentin and produced higher Von Misses stress than that of parallel side post and the Von Misses stress value of the dentin was about 1.1 times. The maximum Von Misses stress value that the design of the thread post produced was about 1.06 times the stress of the nonthread post did. However, the effects of post design on the dentin were minor compared with the bite force directions. In the same post design, the maximum Von Misses stress in dentin with 45 degree oblique force was about 2.1 times with vertical force. Therefore, reducing oblique force is the main method to prevent root fracture in clinic.
