Australia-SH antigen in hepatitis patients in London.

Australia-SH antigen was found in 11 out of 27 sera (40%) obtained from patients with acute viral hepatitis soon after their admission to hospital. Six out of 11 positive sera were collected within the first 12 days of illness; die remaining five were collected between the 13th and 30th days. The antigen was detected by immunodiffusion in agarose gel, five different indicator sera containing Australia-SH antibodies being used. The specificity of these sera was found to be very similar. All of the patients' sera were examined independently by two separate laboratories. The results obtained by the laboratories were in close agreement, though the techniques varied in detail.

Examination by electron microscopy of the San Carlos viruses isolated from children with infectious hepatitis.

The results of a study by electron microscopy of the cytopathic effects produced by the San Carlos viruses on cultured human embryo hepatocytes are reported. Examination of liver cells infected with San Carlos virus 6 revealed single virions and crystalline arrays with the hexagonal virion contour measuring an average of 65 to 70 mmu. However, associated with this predominant virion a smaller virus particle with a dimension of 30 to 40 mmu was also found. The nature of this second virion type is not yet clear but its diameter is much larger than the size so far described for the adeno-associated viruses. The size of the smaller virion is probably also too large for it to be a serious candidate for the hepatitis virus but the possible role of these agents in the aetiology of infectious hepatitis, at least in some patients, merits further study.

Culture of needle biopsies of the liver from patients with suspected hepatitis.

A technique is described for the culture in Leighton tubes of very small fragments of human adult liver obtained by needle biopsy. Most of the cultures were successful, and even after long storage proved to be as useful as those prepared from fresh suspensions. The diagnostic usefulness of the technique is already proved.
