[Carcinoid tumor of the ileum with intestinal tuberculosis--report of a case].

A 65-year-old woman visited our hospital, complaining dizziness and abdominal pain. Positive fecal occur blood and an iron-deficiency anemia were found. An investigation of the GI tract was performed, and enteroclysis revealed three stenotic lesions in the ileum, the most distal one having an irregular edge. A superior mesenteric angiogram showed tumor stain and encasement in the ileal region. On laparotomy, a large tumor and multiple stenosis were found in the ileum. Histological examination of the resected specimen confirmed the diagnosis of a carcinoid tumor and healed tuberculosis of the ileum.

[Digestant effects of a new digestive enzyme capsule, Excelase, on jejunectomized and pancreato-jejunectomized Beagle dogs (author's transl)].

The digestant effects of a new digestive capsule, excelase containing sanactase, proctase, meicelase, olipase-2S and pancreatic digestive enzyme TA, were investigated in vivo. Jejunectomy and pancreato-jejunectomy were performed to cause an artificial disturbance of gastro-intestinal digestion and absorption in Beagle dogs. Absorption of protein and fat was measured using chromic oxide as an indicator. Excelase (3 capsules/dog/day) was given orally to Beagle dogs 1 week after each operation for 7 weeks. Changes in body weight and absorption of protein and fat were observed during the administration. The decrease in body weight of dogs treated with excelase fully recovered, however, that of controls remained even 8 weeks after the surgery. Absorption of protein and fat in the groups of dogs treated with excelase was greatly improved as compared with controls. The digestant effects of excelase on percent absorption of protein and fat were more manifest in pancreato-jejunectomized dogs than in jejunectomized dogs. These results indicate that excelase is effective for gastro-intestinal disturbances of digestion and absorption. The digestant effects of excelase on starch, protein and cellulose were also investigated in vitro using a gastro-intestinal model.

Idiopathic lactic acidemia with developmental delay and type 1 muscle fiber atrophy: report of two patients.

Two infants with generalized muscle hypotonia with mild muscle weakness and markedly delayed developmental milestones, had high lactate levels in serum and cerebrospinal fluid from early infancy. Biochemical and morphologic studies of biopsied muscles disclosed no abnormality except for type 1 fiber atrophy, which was quite different from patients with central nervous involvement with type 2 fiber atrophy. In both patients, the disease was not progressive and lactate levels gradually decreased. Although no metabolic defect was found, these patients probably shared common pathogenetic mechanism.

Long-term intravenous perinatal cocaine exposure on the mortality of rat offspring.

To examine the effects of chronic perinatal cocaine exposure, cocaine was administered intravenously throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period to the rat. Pregnant rats were divided into five groups: nontreated (naive); normal saline control (saline); cocaine first generation (cocaine); saline in the first generation and cocaine in the second generation (Sal-2G); and cocaine in both first and second generations (Coc-2G). The rats receiving cocaine in the second generation (Sal-2G and Coc-2G) were offspring of the saline and cocaine group, respectively. All cocaine-treated groups received cocaine 2 mg/kg/day intravenously (IV), and the saline group received normal saline 0.2 ml/day IV from GD 2 to the 21st day postpartum. Mean perinatal mortality was greater in all pups exposed to cocaine in utero during gestation; Cocaine (6.4%); Sal-2G (5.6%); Coc-2G (11.4%) groups than in the noncocaine groups (3.2%, 1.3%). Weight gain, physical, and neurological developments of the offspring were not affected. It was concluded that perinatal cocaine exposure had an increased perinatal mortality even at doses approximately 10 times lower than those previously reported, which were administered by extravascular routes. These findings indicate the importance of the route of drug administration in perinatal cocaine research.
