Induction of hydroxycinnamic acid amides and tryptophan by jasmonic acid, abscisic acid and osmotic stress in barley leaves.

The effects of jasmonic acid (JA) and abscisic aid (ABA) on secondary metabolism in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) were investigated. Treatment with JA at 100 microM for 48 h induced accumulation of four compounds in barley primary leaves. The accumulation of these compounds was also observed after treatment with ABA at 100 microM. The induced compounds were identified as p-coumaroylputrescine, p-coumaroylagmatine, p-coumaroyl-3-hydroxyagmatine and tryptophan by spectroscopic methods. The profiles of compounds induced by application of JA and ABA were different. JA exhibited stronger inducing activity for hydroxycinnamic acid amides than ABA, while ABA was more active in tryptophan accumulation. The major hydroxycinnamic acid amides in JA- and ABA-treated leaves were p-coumaroylagmatine and p-coumaroyl-3-hydroxyagmatine, respectively. These differences suggested that JA and ABA act in distinct modes. The induction of these compounds was also observed in leaf segments treated with 1 M sorbitol and glucose. These findings suggested that JA and ABA are involved in accumulation of hydroxycinnamic acid amides and tryptophan in response to osmotic stress in barley.

Two cases of fetal akinesia/hypokinesia sequence.

Two cases of fetal akinesia sequence are described. Both showed facial anomalies, arthrogryposis multiplex, bilateral camptodactyly, and pulmonary hypoplasia. One child had degeneration of large motor neurons of the thoracolumbosacral spinal cord and irregular atrophy of diaphragm; the other had left microphthalmia, hemiatrophy of the left temporal lobe with calcification of degenerated neurons, and hypoplasia of the cervothoracic spinal cord with decrease and degeneration of neurons. The iliopsoas and intercostal muscles showed focal myofiber atrophy. These findings suggested that some instances of this fetal akinesia syndrome might be due to neuromuscular dysfunction that occurred in utero and may have various causes.

Bladder carcinoma evaluated by transvaginal ultrasonography.

Transvaginal ultrasonography is a less invasive examination method than transrectal and transurethral ultrasonography for women. However, in spite of the use of transrectal and transurethral ultrasound for the detection of a bladder tumor being well known to urologists, we found no previous studies on transvaginal ultrasonography as a method to evaluate bladder carcinoma. We report a case in which transvaginal ultrasonography contributed to the screening and evaluation of bladder carcinoma.

Attenuation of somatosensory evoked potentials immediately following rapid reaction movement.

We investigated the changes in the somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and particularly which components of the SEPs altered immediately after rapid reaction movements. N20, P23, N35, and P45 components measured over the scalp were all attenuated except for the P45 component measured at CZ. Particularly, the N20 and P23 components were markedly attenuated at both C3' and CZ immediately following rapid reaction movements. N18 and N20 components are thought to represent thalamocortical and primary sensory cortex activities. Therefore, the present results suggest that following rapid reaction movements, the thalamocortical and primary sensory activities are significantly attenuated. Moreover, following rapid reaction movements, the onset of EMG activity preceded the afferent discharge of the muscle spindle. Therefore, it may be concluded that central factors were principally responsible for the attenuation of the SEPs immediately following rapid reaction movements.

Elastase-1-secreting acinar cell carcinoma of the pancreas. A cytologic, electron microscopic and histochemical study.

A case of acinar cell carcinoma of the pancreas was diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology during surgery. The cytologic characteristics of this neoplasm are described. Electron microscopy disclosed numerous zymogen granules in the tumor while histochemistry demonstrated the presence of elastase-1. Serum elastase-1 levels were markedly elevated. The cytologic differential diagnosis of pancreatic tumors is discussed.

Auditory middle latency responses under different task conditions.

We examined the relationship between the Na and Pa components of human MLRs and the performance of different tasks. We also investigated whether MLRs are reliable indices of activity in the central motor-sensory system. The click stimuli we used consistently evoked the Na and Pa components. At CZ, the Na and Pa components significantly decreased for all tasks other than pegging with right hand while at FZ, these components were significantly decreased for all tasks. The Na and Pa latencies were slightly increased during task performances. These results indicate that the Na and Pa components of human MLRs decreased when various tasks were performed, while subjects were concentrating. A general principle of evoked potentials is that latencies decrease as amplitudes increase in excitation due to neural activation. Thus, it would appear that, under the conditions of this study, the pathways from the reticular formation and the thalamus to the primary auditory cortex were inhibited. Since the thalamus is considered to be the relay region for poly-sensory inputs, it is thought that the attenuation of the MLRs and SEPs occurs at the level of cerebral cortex, including the reticular formation, the thalamus, and the primary auditory cortex. Accordingly, since it is inferred that central factors are responsible for the attenuation of the MLRs, Na and Pa components observed during the performance of tasks carried out in the present experiment, it may be concluded that MLRs are reliable indices of activity in the central-motor system.
