Differential effect of pentazocine on primary cortical evoked potentials elicited by stimulation of the trigeminal tract and spinal cord pathways.

The influence of pentazocine on primary cortical evoked potentials was studied in guinea pigs under pentobarbital anesthesia. Pentazocine (10 mg/kg, i.v.) increased the latency time of evoked responses to posterior limb stimulation, more than that of response to lip stimulation. This result suggests that pentazocine decreases the velocity of nervous conduction.

Pathophysiologic studies of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis in the Holstein-Friesian calf.

Pulmonary function changes in 6 Holstein-Friesian calves, 4 to 8 weeks of age, were studied for 10 to 11 days following experimental inoculation with infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus. Calves had no demonstrable antibody titer against IBR virus before inoculation, and all calves responded to the virus by postinoculation day 3 with high fever (greater than 40.6 C) and rapid, shallow breathing. Analysis of blood gases demonstrated a progressive rise in PaCO2 but no change in PaO2. Acid-base state remained normal. Tidal volume decreased with time; conversely, minute ventilation functional residual capacity, O2 consumption, and CO2 production increased. Alveolar ventilation failed to increase as much as predicted. Studies of respiratory mechanics showed a progressive increased in total pulmonary resistance but without change in dynamic pulmonary compliance. A steady-state N2 washout test was used with these calves, and results suggested impairment of intrapulmonary gas mixing as the disease progressed. Microbiologic, pathologic, and histopathologic analyses were consistent with the picture of acute IBR. This study demonstrated our ability to measure pulmonary function changes in nonanesthetized large animals suffering from respiratory tract disease. We characterized the pathophysiologic features of acute IBR infection in the bovine species as an obstructive lung disease resulting in increased resistance to breathing, retention of CO2, and increased resting lung volume.

Antral gastrin concentration in upper-gastrointestinal disease.

Antral gastrin concentration (AGC) was measured in prepyloric mucosa specimens obtained by forceps biopsy during endoscopic examination of 174 clinic and hospital patients. AGC in 32 patients who had normal endoscopic findings, the control group, varied widely from 2 to 38.6 ng gastrin/mg tissue. The mean AGC of the control patients was 14.2 +/- 1.4 (mean +/- 1 SE) ng gastrin/mg tissue. AGC was similar to control values in 18 patients with duodenal ulcer, 14.7 +/- 2.1; 12 patients with a pyloric channel or antral ulcer, 16.4 +/- 3.5; and 48 patients with miscellaneous diagnoses, 14.3 +/- 1.5. AGC was significantly less than control values in 13 patients with a ulcer in the body or fundus of the stomach, 5.9 +/- 1.5, and 4 patients with the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, 4.9 +/- 2.4. AGC was significantly greater than in control values in 16 patients with gastritis, 25.8 +/- 4.3;22 patients with esophagitis, 23.2 +/- 3.0; and 9 patients with gastric atrophy and fasting serum hypergastrinemia 44.6 +/- 12.3. In group of 77 of these patients with heterogeneous diagnoses, meal-stimulated 3-hr integrated gastrin output was directly related to AGC (r = 0.47, P less than 0.001). In a group of 106 patients AGC was inversely related to histalogstimulated maximum acid output. The correlation was very weak (r = -0.20) but significant (P less than 0.05).

Blood pressure in a high school population. I. Standards for blood pressure and the relation of age, sex, weight, height, and race to blood pressure in children 14 to 18 years of age.

This is a report on the initial from an ongoing study of blood pressure in ninth to twelfth grade students in the St. Louis metropolitan area. The purpose was to establish standards, to determine the incidence of hypertension, and to examine the relationship of blood pressure to age, weight, height, sex, and race. Subjects with persistent hypertension were to be investigated and checked annually as long as they were in high school. Students in the ninth grade at the beginning of the project were to be screened each year for four years.

Changes in human amniotic fluid fibrinolytic inhibitor levels during pregnancy.

The amniotic fluid (AF) when incubated with the patient's own plasma diminishes the lytic activity of the plasma. It is suggested that this inhibition is due to the presence of fibrinolytic inhibitors in the AF. The inhibitors rate increases as pregnancy advances. Evaluating these inhibitors in a group of 65 women before and after the 38th week of pregnancy, a higher rate of fibrinolytic inhibitors is found after the 38th week. The said differences are statistically significant. For the moment it does not seem that the increasing of the inhibitors in the last part of pregnancy might be used as a fetal maturity test.

Effect of pentazocine on the evoked potentials recorded in the primary somesthetic cortical areas of guinea pigs.

The influence of pentazocine on the evoked potentials registered in the primary somesthetic cortical area in guinea pigs under pentobarbital anesthesia was studied. The stimulation was applied in the contralateral lip and the evoked cortical responses from different zones on the cortex stereotaxically localized were registered. Pentazocine (5-10 mg/kg i.v.) induced a significant increase in the latency of the evoked potentials as compared with controls. Since morphine does not modify these potentials, the effect of pentazocine is interpreted as being a direct one on the primary pain pathway.

The effects of long-term administration of 3H-digoxin to the pregnant ewe upon the cardiovascular hemodynamics of the fetal lamb.

Placental transfer of tritiated digoxin in the ewe and its effect upon the left ventricular output (LVO) of the exteriorized fetal lamb were studied. Seven ewes were given 6 mug per kilogram of body weight of tritiated digoxin daily (20 per cent of total digitalizing dose 0.03 mug per kilogram of body weight) during their entire pregnancies. The fetuses were exteriorized between 130 and 140 days of gestation, and the LVO was determined serially by the dye-dilution technique for one hour. The mean tissue concentrations in millimicrograms per gram for the ewes were: heart, 5.7 plus or minus 1.76; liver, 3.38 plus or minus 1.38, kidney, 01.9 plus or minus 12.3. Corresponding values for the fetuses were: 1.55 plus or minus 1.01, 0.78 plus or minus 0.35, and 2.48 plus or minus 1.18. The mean serum level for the ewe at the end of one hour was 1.65 ng. per milliliter plus or minus 0.48, and that for the fetus was 1.22 plus or minus 0.20. The amniotic fluid contained 1.45 ng. per milliliter plus or minus 0.27. At the end of one hour, the mean LVO of the fetus had decreased by 39 plus or minus 15 per cent of its control value. Although the fetal serum level of tritiated digoxin was similar to that found in the mother and the amniotic fluid contained a significant amount of tritiated digoxin, the fetal tissue concentration of tritiated digoxin was not sufficient to produce any demonstrable inotropic effect.

Idiopathic paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia in infants and children.

Seven children with idiopathic PVT ranging in age from one day to 18 yr, have been observed during the past three years. The presenting complaints and frequency of paroxysms varied greatly. Three patients presented with syncope; four were asymptomatic. Lidocaine was effective in terminating acute symptomatic attacks; procaine amide and propranolol were effective in long-term control of the arrhythmia. Monitoring of the dynamic ECG was invaluable in establishing the diagnosis, characterizing the arrhythmia, and evaluating the effects of activity and therapy.
