Dolichol biosynthesis in human malignant cells.

Cholesterol, ubiquinone and dolichol biosynthesis from mevalonic acid was measured in non-malignant and malignant cultured human lymphocytes, freshly isolated human mononuclear leucocytes and in cultured human hepatoma cells. The relative flux of mevalonate into ubiquinone, dilichol and cholesterol was not significantly different between malignant and non-malignant cells, although the extent of labelling of each product was an order of magnitude greater in the malignant cultured cells. The most prominent dolichol isolated from total cellular lipid and synthesized in short-term labelling of cultured leukaemic cells had a chain length one isoprene unit shorter than that observed in normal human cells. Cultured human hepatoma cells and mononuclear leucocytes isolated from the peripheral blood of individuals with lymphoblastic and myelogenic leukaemia similarly synthesized shorter-chain dolichols. The dolichols made in cultured non-tumorigenic cells, freshly isolated mononuclear leucocytes from a normal individual or a patient with non-haematological malignancy had normal chain length.

[Reintegration of people suffering from schizophrenia : marginalized for life ?].

This article develops a theory based on 10 years of involvement in an external psychiatric clinic identified as Mental Health Centre (<< Centre de santé mentale >>). Our first objective is to break the isolation in which our subjects have been living and to succeed in establishing significant ties with them. Our work concentrates on people suffering from schizophrenia that we meet daily in groups. In the article, we present a profile of this clientele, our conception of their way of adaptating to life, their therapeutic course and the framework in which it has evolved. Given the development of newly acquired skills as a result of these privileged ties, how do the beneficiaries transpose them into community life? While some succeed in using their new skills and others don't, the latter group must face the necessity of an adapted social reinsertion. This is the reason why we have decided to focus on the dynamic understanding of these people and the particular conditions of their social reinsertion.

Changing patterns of hypertension, diabetes, obesity and diet among Melanesians and Micronesians in the Solomon Islands.

A cross-sectional survey of diabetes, hypertension, obesity and dietary patterns has been conducted in the Western Province of the Solomon Islands. Three groups--traditional and more urbanized Melanesians and semitraditional Micronesians--were compared. Abnormal glucose tolerance was rare (less than 1% over all) in Melanesians regardless of acculturation, but was present in 9.7% of adult Micronesians in whom it was associated with age; obesity; female sex; and a diet that was high in energy and refined carbohydrates. Hypertension, which was associated with advancing age and obesity, was recorded in 6.0% and 8.3% of traditional and partly urbanized Melanesians, respectively, and in 4.8% of Micronesians. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures correlated significantly with age for all except traditional Melanesian women among whom the association was limited to the systolic blood pressure only. Significant correlation coefficients were recorded between diastolic blood pressure and body mass index for both sexes and all groups, and between systolic blood pressure and body mass index for all women but only for Micronesian men. Dramatic differences in life-style and dietary patterns are described for rural and more urbanized Melanesians among whom the mean daily urinary sodium outputs were 67 and 119 mmol/L, respectively.

Intermediates of tocopherol biosynthesis in the unicellular alga Scenedesmus obliquus. The presence of three isomeric methylphytylbenzoquinones.

Three isomers of methylphytylbenzoquinone have been isolated from lipids of the unicellular alga Scenedesmus obliquus, the most abundant being 2-methyl-6-phytylbenzoquinone (65% of the total). The 2-methyl-3-phytyl and 2-methyl-5-phytyl isomers amounted to 8 and 27% respectively. Previously problems have been encountered in the separation of the 3-phytyl and the 6-phytyl isomers, but in the present study it was found that they separated readily as quinols. Phytyl plastoquinone was also found and the relevance of these compounds to the biosynthesis of alpha-tocopherol is discussed. As well as phylloquinone, a hydroxyphylloquinone was detected, and studies indicated that it is the 5' carbon atom to which the hydroxy group is attached. Such a compound has been found by workers using other unicellular algae.

Trisomy 13 ascertained in a survey of spontaneous abortions.

In a series of 2922 karyotyped spontaneous abortions, 62 were found to be trisomic for chromosome 13, 46 having a simple trisomy and 16 a translocation trisomy. The epidemiology of this series of trisomy 13 conceptuses is presented and compared to that of trisomy 13 ascertained from other populations. In most compared parameters the trisomy 13 spontaneous abortions are very similar. However, there is no evidence in our material for the fall in proportion of trisomy 13 conceptuses at very advanced maternal ages that has been reported in three previous studies, one of spontaneous abortions and two of amniocentesis specimens.

[Lumbar cord potentials evoked by stimulation of the nerves of the lower limb in man].

Lumbar cord potentials evoked by electrical stimulation of the posterior tibial and sural nerves at the ankle were recorded with monopolar epidural electrodes, at T11-T12 level in 20 subjects and were compared with surface recorded potentials. Two quadriplegic patients with spinal section were included in this group. Curare was given in two cases. Xylocaine block of peripheral nerve was carried out in 4 cases. Double shock study was done in 5 cases. The lumbar cord evoked potentials show two successive components: a 'primary' negative-positive spike response with a latency of 19-35 msec, and the 'secondary' waves with latencies up to 200 msec. The 'primary' response is mainly produced by the afferent volley in the fibres of the dorsal roots and of their intramedullary prolongations. There is no evidence which suggests that it is correlated with presynaptic inhibition. The secondary components may be divided into the early and the late waves. The early waves (40-90 msec) are related to the polysynaptic activities from the afferent fibres of small diameters. The late waves are under the influence of supraspinal mechanism and may be related to long-loop reflexes. The clinical implications of these evoked potentials are discussed.

[Group therapy through graphic art.].

In this article we describe and comment upon two graphic art therapy groups. Is it possible to accomplish work of a psycho-therapeutic nature in such groups? We attempt to respond to this question using examples taken from the experience of these different groups. First, we explain how the groups operate, our method of intervention, the general evolution, and finally, we present, in an in-depth fashion, the progress of one of the participants.

A new case of monoclonal IgA kappa cold agglutinin with anti-Pr1d specificity in a patient with persistent HB antigen cirrhosis.

A new case of cold agglutinin disease in a patient who had a long lasting Raynaud's phenomenon without hemolysis and a persistent HB antigen cirrhosis, is reported. The cold agglutinin is a monoclonal IgA kappa antibody which reacts at 4degreesC to a titer of 256. As the three other cases described in the literature, it demonstrates Pr1 specificity. The eluate from human cells reacts with rat and dog cells whose receptor is destroyed by both papain and neuraminidase, thus eliciting the characteristic Pr1d specificity.
