Resistant levels of houseflies to six kinds of synthetic insecticides in the Philippines.

The resistant levels of houseflies to six kinds of insecticides: DDT, Pyrethrins, malathion, Sumithion, Baytex and DDVP, were examined on 15 strains collected in the Philippines. It was found that most housefly colonies in the Philippines showed higher susceptibility to those insecticides than the Takatsuki strains, especially to DDT. The range of LD50 values to malathion were between 1.775 microgram and 0.0975 microgram per fly. Among 15 strains collected in the Philippines, 7 showed higher LD50 values to malathion than the Takatsuki strain. These values mean that the houseflies in the Philippines are increasing their resistance to malathion.

A case of new dysautonomia-like disorder found in Japan. I. Clinical and metabolic studies.

A case of new dysautonomia-like disorder in a Japanese infant is reported. The patient showed almost all of the essential criteria for the diagnosis of familial dysautonomia. Results of pharmacologic tests and urinary excretion patterns of catecholamines and their metabolites were also compatible with the disorder. But he lacked some important clinical findings, such as lifelong hypolacrimia, skin blotching, excessive sweating and labile blood pressure. Precise observations of clinical features and literatures on non-Jewish cases of familial dysautonomia lent evidence that this case suffered from a new dysautonomia-like disorder.

[Respiratory function of mitochondria in the inner and outer layers of the dog myocardium].

The respiratory effect of dog myocardial mitochondria was studied by measuring oxygen content in a reaction chamber using Garbani electrode. 1) In normal dog mitochondria, oxygen consumption rate (QO2) in state 3 and state 4, respiratory control ratio (RCR) and ADP/O ratio were not different between the inner and outer layers when glutamate or succinate was used as substrate. 2) Thirty min after the occlusion of one of the small branches of the anterior descending artery, there were no differences in the respiratory effects between the inner and outer layers when glutamate or succinate was used as substrate. HOowever, compared with the normal dog mitochondria, ADP/O ratio, QO2 in state 3 and state 4 were lower in the outer layer and QO2 in state 4 was lower in the inner layer when succinate was used as substrate. 3) When the anterior descending branch was narrowed to decrease the blood flow to about a half, the respiratory effects were not different between the inner and outer layers when succinate was used as substrate. However, ADP/O ratio in the outer layer was lower than that of the normal dog. 4) Nitroglycerin had no effect on the respiratory effects either in vitro (1.63 X 10(-6) M, succinate as substrate) or in vivo (20 mug/kg i.v., glutamate as substrate.) 5) Dipyridamole had no effect on the respiratory effects in vivo (250 mug/kg, i.v., glutamate as substrate) but, ADP/O ratio in the outer layer was diminished in vitro (7.34 X 10(-6) M, succinate as substrate).

[Effect of prostaglandin E1 on the isolated stomach, small intestine, bronchus and uterus of experimental animals and its intestinal effect in vivo].

The stomach, intestine and uterus were contracted by PGE1. Stimulating effects of ACh and serotonin were augmented in some of these organs, especially in guinea pig uterus. ACh- and serotonin-induced bronchial contraction, however, decreased after administration of PGE1. Bronchial relaxation induced by adrenaline or noradrenaline was unaffected or increased. Antiadrenergic effects were not detected in the organs tested. ACh-induced contractions of frog rectus abdominus was augmented by PGE. The potentiating effect of PGE1 was almost the same in degree as that of physotigmine, although cholinesterase inhibitory effect was not detected in PGE1. Intravenous injection of PGE1 (10 mug/kg) into rabbits caused a relaxation of the intestine, which was contrary to the result with the isolated organ. Administration of PGE1 (1 mug/100 g, i.p. or 0.1, 1 mug/100 g, i.v.) did not show any curative effects on intestinal paralysis in cecectomized rats. The mechasism of action of PGE1 on rat uterus was found to be calcium-dependant.
