Cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP: mediators of the mechanical effects on bone remodeling.

Compressive forces of physiological magnitude (60 grams per square centimeter) reduce the adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate and guanosine 3',5'-monophosphate content of the epiphyses of tibiae from 16-day-old chick embryos. An equivalent hydrostatic pressure applied directly to cells isolated from this tissue also affects cyclic nucleotide accumulation. The tissue response is uniform throughout the epiphysis, whereas the cell response varies according to the area of origin.

A quantitative method for the application of compressive forces to bone in tissue culture.

A quantitative method for the application of compressive forces to long bones in culture is described. Using this method it was found that a physiological pressure of 80g/cm sq. applied to tibiae of 16-day-old chick embryos reduced glucose consumption to 50% of controls. Twenty four hours after the release of pressure glucose utilization again increased, approaching control levels. A pressure of 80 g/cm sq. also stimulated thymidine incorporation into DNA. The same pressure decreased the size of the extracellular fluid pool by 8%, but had no effect on the rate of equilibration of this pool with 22Na.

Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) analysis of the application of a cationic conditioner to "clean" hair.

In this study the applicability of the surface-sensitive ToF-SIMS technique to hair analysis and associated aqueous processing is evaluated. ToF-SIMS analysis of "as received" human hair indicates the presence of silicones, anionic surfactants, and cationic conditioners, from previous treatments, on the fiber surface. Cleaning of the hair with SLS or SLES results in adsorption of the surfactants onto the fiber surface. In particular, the more non-polar surfactant components have greater substantivity for the fiber surface, as indicated by the relative increase in their ToF-SIMS intensity. Application of the Incroquat Behenyl 18-MEA conditioner to both "virgin" and bleached hair results in the adsorption of the cationic C18, C20, C22, and C21 surfactant components onto the hair surface. The ToF-SIMS data indicate higher levels of conditioner on the bleached hair relative to the undamaged hair.

A multicentre pilot study of sulphasalazine in juvenile chronic arthritis.

In this multicentre pilot study of sulphasalazine in juvenile chronic arthritis, the mode of onset and course of the disease, and when available, the HLA status, was recorded on the entry form. After appropriate clinical and laboratory appraisal, sulphasalazine up to 40 mg/kg/day was given for one year with assessments at 0, 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. Fifty-one patients enrolled, 8 of whom were withdrawn because of side effects. In the remainder by 12 months a good effect was noted in 12, 8 having pauci-articular onset disease commencing after the age of 9 years, of whom 6 carried HLA B27. It was relatively ineffective in the other subgroups. The frequency and severity of side effects was similar to that seen in adults. Further evaluation in controlled trials is required in older onset pauci-articular arthritis, taking due note of the patient's HLA status, and also in juvenile psoriatic arthritis and seropositive juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
