Ultrasound in congenital intracranial haemorrhage secondary to isoimmune thrombocytopaenia.

Three cases of congenital intracranial haemorrhage, diagnosed post-natally by ultrasound, are presented. The ultrasound findings of intracranial haemorrhage secondary to thrombocytopaenia are discussed. The haematomas were partly organised at birth and the ventricular systems were dilated in two cases. This type of haemorrhage is a different entity from post-natal intracranial haemorrhage in the preterm infant.

Ultrasonography in the management of liver trauma in children.

Three cases of blunt abdominal trauma with conservative management are presented. All cases were followed with ultrasonography. In two cases the lesions showed significant increases in their cystic components before reduction in size and complete resolution. The natural history of damaged liver tissue is discussed. Conservative management with ultrasonographic follow-up of selected cases of liver trauma in children is advocated.

Primary amoebic (Naegleria) meningoencephalitis.

The computed tomographic (CT) appearance of a case of primary meningoencephalitis due to the free living amoeba Naegleria fowleri is presented. The cisterns around and above the midbrain and the subarachnoid spaces were obliterated on precontrast CT. Marked enhancement in these regions was seen after intravenous contrast medium administration. The sulci and adjacent grey matter were also strongly enhanced. The ventricular size was normal. Pathological findings were those of arachnoiditis and invasion of the leptomeninges and brain substance by amoebae, especially at the base of the brain and cerebellum.

Ultrasound in the evaluation of small bowel lymphoma in children.

In seven children with small bowel lymphoma, gray scale ultrasound correctly identified the pathological process, as well as excluded the kidney, liver, and adrenal as the site of origin. In all cases, thickened bowel wall and exoenteric masses were identified. Surgical confirmation was obtained in all patients.

Distinguishing neuroblastoma from Wilms tumor by computed tomography.

The CT appearances of 18 clinically proven cases of abdominal neuroblastoma were reviewed retrospectively with the aim of characterizing those features that best distinguish them from Wilms tumors. The study found that the most common characteristics of neuroblastoma on CT are usually a suprarenal mass displacing the kidney and either growing down into the hilum or actually infiltrating the kidney; extension of the tumor across the midline to displace the major vessels; presence of calcification in the tumor.

Intracranial Serratia infection in preterm newborn infants.

Four cases of cerebral Serratia infection in preterm infants were diagnosed with the aid of real-time sector sonography. Three cases had brain abscesses and one case had ventriculitis. In two cases brain abscesses had ruptured into the ventricles. Serratia brain abscess was common in our series of brain abscesses. Sonographic patterns of cerebritis, abscess formation, and ventriculitis correlated well with computed tomographic scans. Bedside cerebral sonography proved to be useful for the diagnosis, location, and follow-up of intracranial Serratia infection.
