[Opinions and attitudes of youngsters about sexually transmitted diseases].

A group of 1.085 students (582 M, 503 F) attending high school (742) and nursing school (343) filled in an anonymous questionnaire on their sexual habits and their knowledge of contraception and sexually transmitted diseases. Overall, 57% of the study population had already a complete sexual intercourse at a mean age of 16,4 (SD +/- 1,8). 74% had 1-3 sexual partners, whereas 28% had more than 3. All students affirmed that it was possible to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and 92,6% indicated correct methods. However 10% of students did not know that AIDS is transmitted sexually as 47% hepatitis B. The responses made by nursing students were more correct that those of high school students.

[Sleeping in the supine position in the ASL 11 region of Piemonte. Assessment of the efficacy of a promotional campaign].

OBJECTIVES: To record the prevalence of the sleeping position of sucklings living in the ASL 11-Regione Piemonte; to make an information campaign about the utility of sleeping in the supine position (most important protection factor against the SIDS); to find out its efficacy for a short or long time. METHODS: During the first two months of 2002 all the parents coming to the consulting rooms for the compulsory vaccinations of their 3 and 5 months old babies have been interviewed about the position of their babies during sleep. The same recording has been made in the first two months of 2003 and 2004. During 2002 various consciousness campaigns have been made, above all for medical operators of hospital nurseries and of Mother-and-Child Departments and Prevention Departments in ASL 11 area. RESULTS: Before the consciousness campaign the percentage of 3 months old sucklings sleeping in the supine position was 62,3% and 55% for the 5 months old suckings; after the campaign the percentage has grown to 77,4% for 3 months old sucklings and 74,5% for 5 months old sucklings during 2003 and during 2004 the percentage has grown to 80,3% and 74,2%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: A simple and not expensive but capillary consciousness and information campaign addressed to medical operators has obtained valid and statistically relevant results in a short time.

[Hypophosphatasia: a family study].

Diagnostic pathway and 5-years follow-up of a case of childhood-form hypophosphatasia (a severe form of vitamin D resistant rickets) are described. Family study led to the identification of five affected relatives (father, sister, paternal uncle, first-cousins), two with severe clinical evidence. Inheritance pattern in this family is compatible with autosomal dominant transmission.

[Genomic imprinting and human pathology. I. General Part].

Genetical as well as experimental embryology methods have permitted to uncover a very important feature of mammalian embryonic development: it has been shown that female and male genomic complements are differentially imprinted in such a way that contribution of both a maternally and a paternally derived genome are absolutely necessary for the embryo to complete its normal development. The paternal and maternal genomes are not equivalent and have a complementary role during development in mammals. The differences in activity of each parental genome result from an epigenetic modification of the genome during gametogenesis: the parental imprinting. The recent discovery of several mouse and human genes which are imprinted should permit to address new data of some diseases.

[Congenital testicular torsion: a true emergency?].

In the following article the description of four cases of congenital testicular testis, which attend to be under our observation, is reported. Moreover, the diagnostic process is discussed, with particular reference to echography. Afterwards, the method for early surgical exploration is evaluated. The survey concludes that echographic inquiry does not have to be judged indispensable.

[Spasmus nutans. A re-emergent pathology?].

The authors report two cases of spasmus nutans (a clinical syndrome peculiar to infancy the complete form of which is characterised by nystagmus, rhythmic head movements and wryneck) in two extra-EEC infants. The following elements were present in both patients: scarce exposure to light, early introduction of whole cow's milk, rachitic stigmata, dark skin, poor socio-economic conditions and rapid and complete remission of symptoms following daily exposure to sunlight. It is important to distinguish spasmus nutans, a completely benign and self-restricting disease, from potentially severe conditions which may appear with similar symptoms. It should be expected that this clinical condition will become more frequent in view of the considerable increase in the size of the non-EEC population.

[Genomic imprinting and human pathology. 2].

Genetic imprinting does occur in humans. This is manifest at the level of the genome, the individual chromosome or subcromosomal region, and the single locus. Genomic imprinting is manifest in the developmental defects of hydatiform mole, teratoma and triploidy. Chromosomal imprinting effects are revealed when uniparental disomy or deletion occur as costitutional aberration or in tumural tissues. Evidence at the single gene level comes from an increasing number of autosomal dominant genetic diseases. This part of the paper will briefly review the importance of imprinting in the contest of human genetic diseases.

[Malformations of the midline. A case-control study].

Defects of the middle line are an heterogeneous group of congenital malformations due to commune pathogenetic mechanisms. We have made a case-control study about 150 newborns, who have at least 1 defect of the middle line. Results prove an excess of males between the cases, due mostly to hypospadias. We haven't found families with defects of the middle line with x-linked manner of hereditary transmission. We haven't found any particular risk present in cases and not in controls. We haven't found any case with 2 or more middle line defects.

[Glucose as an analgesic in neonatology. A blind randomized controlled study].

The aim of this study is the evaluation of the effect of different oral glucose solutions on the pain response after heelstick in newborns. Four groups of healthy newborns (gestational age 38-41 weeks, weight over 2500 g) were randomly allocated to receive 2 ml of water (19 cases) or glucose 5% solution (17 cases) or glucose 33% solution (15 cases) or nothing (control group, 14 cases) immediately before heelstick procedure. The cardiac rate of each newborn was registered before, during and 3 minutes after the procedure. Glucose 33% solution reduces the pain response (p < 0.01).
