[Role of ultrasonography in the assessment of lymphoma localized in the abdomen].

Both prognosis and treatment of lymphomas depend strictly on both clinical staging and histologic classification. The role of US was investigated in the evaluation of patients affected with abdominal lymphoma. To this purpose, 52 patients affected with abdominal lymphoma underwent US and CT studies during staging, treatment, or follow-up. A comparison of the results of the two methods shows that the systematic use of US allows 5% of lymph nodes missed at CT to be demonstrated, together with hepatic and splenic involvement also undetected by CT. It is true, however, that the limited number of cases does not allow this result to be correlated with the histopathologic type of lymphopathy. US has also been the examination of choice to evaluate response to chemotherapy and to study suspected relapses. In the authors' opinion, US should become a complementary technique to CT in the staging of abdominal lymphomas.

Study of propidium iodide binding to DNA in intact cells by flow cytometry.

We studied the in situ binding of propidium iodide to DNA in fixed human lymphocytes, using flow cytometry. Experimental data of fluorescence emission vs dye concentration and vs cell concentration were obtained. Data were interpreted by means of two different mathematical models specific for the staining reaction, and the binding parameters were obtained by "best-fitting" of the data. A model based on two classes of binding sites with different affinity constants gave the most satisfactory fitting. The accessibility of the in situ chromatin turned out to be reduced with respect to the non in situ accessibility for ethidium bromide as reported in the literature. The present study shows the usefulness of the flow-cytometric technique for probing DNA structure in intact cells.

[Osteoarthropathies of inflammatory diseases of the colon].

Fifteen patients suffering from inflamatory diseases of the colon (14 nonspecific ulcerous recto colitis and 1 Crohn disease) were complicated with involvement of large joints and spine (ankylosing spondelytis). The clinic, radiology, pathology, seriology and evolution of ankylosing spondylitis were considered in relation-ship with inflamatory disease of colon.

[Chordoma. Diagnostic and therapeutic problems].

The chordoma is a rare mesodermic tumor derived from the notochord which arises and growths inside the vertebral bodies. It is a slow development tumor with late clinical manifestations, rarely metastatic often with local reoccurrences. The treatment of choice of this tumor is surgical and the access must be individualized to the single clinical case: anterior, posterior or combined antero-posterior respect to the spine. Recently videolaparoscopy has been proposed when an anterior approach is indicated without increased morbidity or mortality. Chemotherapy is not indicated because low tumoral responsness. Radiotherapy is indicated as a palliative procedure when a surgical approach ca't be radical. Its application is useful to treat pains and to control the post-operative course increasing the disease-free interval. The authors report the case of an old symptomatic lady with a chordoma in the sacral region. The patient underwent subtotal absportation an anterior transperitoneal approach. Because the extension of the tumor, its biological characteristics and the patient's age the authors adopted this less invasive approach.
