Letters were exposed by tachistoscope for 17 ms to adult subjects. In Experiment I, single letters were exposed. The proportion of errors differed strongly for particular letters. In Experiment II pairs of letters were exposed. The first letter of a pair was recognized more easily than when exposed alone in Experiment I. In Experiment III pairs of letters were exposed but the subject's task was to recognize only one letter of the pair. Both, first and second letters of the pair were then recognized better than in Experiment I. The results were interpreted in terms of facilitatory and inhibitory effects occurring on different levels of the visual system.

An isolation method has been developed based on laminin-coated magnetic beads which yields human trophoblast with a high degree of purity. Immunostaining with a panel of monoclonal antibodies indicates that these trophoblast cells are mainly of the extravillous variety. The mechanism for selection may be due to the expression of surface laminin receptors by these cells. This procedure, therefore, can provide appropriate cellular targets for in vitro assays against potential uterine effectors in studies on the local trophoblast-decidual interaction.

We define expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigens in the nonlymphoid tissues of the developing rat. Antibodies to class I heavy and light chains (b2-m), and to class II MHC proteins were used. Strongest MHC expression was by individual cells in the skin, lung, gut, and inter-organ connective tissue. The class I+ and class II+ cells were distinct populations, differing in morphology, distribution, and expression of macrophage-associated antigens. A nonimmunologic role for MHC proteins in development has been proposed. Yet the distributions and antigenic profiles lead us to emphasize immunologic functions that may be served by the early presence of MHC+ cells outside the forming lymphoid organs. Potential contributions to establishment of extrathymic or maternal/fetal tolerance are discussed. Localization of strongest MHC expression to individual connective tissue cells of the developing organs, rather than parenchymal cells, is of clinical relevance to transplantation of fetal tissue.
Human trophoblast cells with immunocytochemical characteristics of the extravillous population have been isolated from 1st trimester placentae. Treatment of these cells with IFN-gamma increases the expression of Class I antigens at both the cell surface and mRNA level. A similar increase in Class I antigens is also found in JEG-3 choriocarcinoma cells after treatment with IFN-gamma. The possibility that aberrant production of IFN-gamma may upset the fetal-maternal equilibrium in vivo is discussed.
The studies comparing the actions of dried thyroid gland (Thyroideum-Polfa) with L-thyroxine sodium (L-T4) were carried out in 20 female patients with hypothyroidism, including 19 patients with the primary hypothyroidism and 1 patient with hypothyroidism secondary to pituitary deficiency. Administration of the dried thyroid gland did not normalize blood serum T4 an TSH in any patient. Normal serum T4 or even slightly increased was achieved in all patients treated with L-T4. Serum TSH was normalized in 17 patients with the primary hypothyroidism. The following conclusions have been drawn: 1. Dried thyroid gland (Thyroideum-Polfa) is ineffective in the treatment of hypothyroidism. 2. Serum TSH remains elevated despite normal serum T3 in cases of the primary hypothyroidism with decreased serum T4 levels. 3. Sodium salt of L-thyroxine should be used for the treatment of hypothyroidism. 1-Triiodothyronine sodium may be used as an adjuvant therapy.

Effect of stereotaxic injuries to the medial temporal brain structures on memorization of material presented successively or simultaneously was studied. The study aimed at testing whether stereotaxic damage to the hippocampus and amygdala results in a memory deficit and whether functions subserved by those structures depend on type and organization of the memorized material. The results indicate that even small damage to the medial temporal lobe structures may result in a deficit in memorization ability. The greatest impairment was observed for successive presentation of nonverbal stimuli.
