[Attempt at the experimental reproduction of rotavirus diarrhea in newborn calves deprived of colostrum].

Colostrum-deprived newborn calves were orally inoculated with different doses of cell-culture bovine rotavirus or with bacterium-free filtrates of calf stools containing rotavirus. None of the animals that received high doses of cell-culture rotavirus developed diarrhoea or any other clinical sign, although all of them excreted virus for several days and produced specific antibodies; calves inoculated with lower doses of cell-culture virus or with stool filtrates showed a transient diarrhoea 48 h after inoculation. Such paradoxical results might be due to a phenomenon of interference, as bovine rotavirus is susceptible to interferon. In experimental conditions, rotavirus produces only a mild and transient diarrhoea: this contrasts with the situation observed in farms, where that virus may provoke important problems. In association with the virus itself, numerous other factors such as the environmental conditions or the response of the calf to the infection also play a role in the evolution of the disease.

Patch-testing with serial dilutions of tixocortol pivalate and potential cross-reactive substances.

Of patch-tested patients with dermatitis, 4-5% are allergic to corticosteroids. Four groups of corticosteroids are recognized (A-D), where substances from the same group may cross-react. We investigated the potential cross-reactivity pattern and dose-response relationship for several corticosteroids from group A. We also included the corresponding aldehyde to hydrocortisone, as this degradation product has been proposed to be immunogenic. Eleven patients shown to be allergic to tixocortol pivalate were patch-tested with several corticosteroids from group A, as well as with the aldehyde, all in serial dilutions. All 11 reacted to both tixocortol pivalate and hydrocortisone. The dose-response relationship for the corticosteroids tended to be similar to sensitizers lacking anti-inflammatory potential. Patients with simultaneous reactions to many substances had high patch-test reactivity to tixocortol pivalate and hydrocortisone, while patients with few such reactions showed low reactivity (p=0.001 and 0.003, respectively). Several patients reacted to the aldehyde, supporting the theory that it is an intermediate in sensitization.

Contact allergy to isoeugenol and its derivatives: problems with allergen substitution.

A total of 2261 (808 male, 1453 female) consecutive patients attending contact dermatitis clinics were patch tested to isoeugenol and its derivatives listed in the EU Inventory of Fragrance Ingredients. Positive reactions were found to isoeugenol in 40, transisoeugenol in 40, isoeugenyl acetate in 19, isoeugenyl benzoate in 4, isoeugenyl phenylacetate in 16, isoeugenyl methyl ether in 6 and benzyl isoeugenyl ether in 2 patients. There was a concomitant reaction to isoeugenol in 36/40 of those positive to transisoeugenol, 13/19 of those to isoeugenyl acetate, 3/4 of those to isoeugenyl benzoate and 15/16 of those to isoeugenyl phenylacetate but in none of those 6 positive to isoeugenyl methyl ether and in neither of those 2 positive to benzyl isoeugenyl ether. Concomitant contact allergy between isoeugenol and its derivatives may occur through chemical cross-reactivity or local skin metabolism of the derivatives. It is more commonly observed with the esters rather than the ethers. Isoeugenyl acetate has been proposed as an alternative to isoeugenol, but there is a high degree of concomitant reactivity with isoeugenol.

Tumour-associated tissue eosinophilia in head and neck squamous-cell carcinoma.

The possible role of tumour-associated tissue eosinophilia (TATE) as a prognostic factor in epithelial tumours has been investigated before. TATE is supposed to be associated with good prognosis. In this study concerning 63 patients with laryngeal and/or pharyngeal squamous-cell carcinoma, we tried to verify this hypothesis. Of the 25 patients with TATE, 17 (68%) had a good outcome opposed to 8 (32%) with a poor outcome. This numerically better chance for a good outcome in case of TATE was however not statistically significant. Uniformity of research material, staining and classification of TATE together with more representative and larger series of patients should ascertain the real value of TATE as a valid prognostic factor in head and neck squamous-cell carcinoma.

Retropharyngeal synovial sarcoma in an infant: report of a case and of its response to chemotherapy; review of the literature.

Synovial sarcoma of the retropharynx is an extremely rare neoplasm. To date, only 10 cases have been reported in patients less than 15 years old. Our 15-month-old patient is, to our knowledge, the youngest ever reported with a retropharyngeal synovial sarcoma in the world literature. In the past, treatment usually consisted of surgery followed by radiotherapy or adjuvant chemotherapy, or both. In the case reported here, combination chemotherapy (ifosfamide, vincristine, and actinomycin D), used as the initial treatment modality, induced a dramatic decrease of the synovial sarcoma.

Fluticasone propionate: a rare contact sensitizer.

Fluticasone propionate is the first of a new generation of fluorinated corticosteroids that have been synthesized with a view to separating local activity from undesirable side effects. In recent years, contact allergy to the newer topical corticosteroids has received increasing attention. The results of patch testing with fluticasone propionate, even in patients with a known contact allergy to corticosteroids, argue for a low sensitization and cross-sensitization potential.

Frequency and relevance of positive patch tests to cyclohexylthiophthalimide, a new rubber allergen.

Cyclohexylthiophtalimide (CTP) is currently the most widely used vulcanization retarder in the rubber industry. Little is known about sensitization to CTP, although positive tests to it do occur in patients exposed to rubber objects. A retrospective study of 350 patients who were patch tested with the standard rubber chemical series was conducted in two departments of dermatology, one in Nancy, France, and one in Leuven, Belgium. Sixteen (4.6%) out of the 350 patients had clear and 6 (1.7%) had doubtful positive reactions to CTP. Cross-sensitivity with other molecules could not be determined. The source of sensitization in most cases seems to have been protective rubber gloves at work. In the other cases, sensitization was suspected to have been caused by rubber shoes, elastic bands in underwear, or other rubber objects. The determination of the relevance of positive tests remains difficult, especially since little is known about the components of rubber products.

Solitary exulceratio simplex (ulcer of Dieulafoy).

Solitary exulceratio simplex (ulcer of Dieulafoy--Dieulafoy vascular malformation) is a rare and frequently overlooked cause of massive gastric hemorrhage. The source of the bleeding, a large, submucosal artery penetrating the centre of a small mucosal defect, is usually located in the upper portion of the stomach. The pathogenesis of this entity is not known. We report on two patients who were successfully treated by surgery. Clinical, morphological and pathogenetic aspects are discussed.

[Adenocarcinoma of the thyroglossal duct].

Carcinoma of the thyroglossal duct is a rare entity. In most cases, papillary carcinomas are reported. Follicular or squamous cell carcinomas are seldom. Insofar no capsular refraction exists, the best treatment seems to be the Sistrunk operation with postoperative thyroid suppression medication.
