Econometric analysis of phase duration for blood morphology and basophil count alterations in chronic granulocytic leukaemia.

The retrospective analysis of 40 cases with chronic granulocytic leukemia revealed an average survival time of 39 months. Modal proportions between the chronic, accelerated and acute blastic crisis amounted to 25:6:8 months. The characteristic points and curves for peripheral white cell, blast cell, basophil cell and thrombocyte counts as well as haemoglobin levels were determined separately in 20 patients with long and in 20 with short survival time. Comparisons indicate among others that Busulphan sensitivity is an essential factor for a longer survival time of CGL patients.

Toxicity interactions and ways of reducing side effects of anticancer drugs.

Side effects of cytostatics commonly used in the Haematology Clinic are analysed. The toxic action on the host's organs is discussed in L-asparaginase, azathioprine, bleomycine, busulfan, cyclophosphamide, cytosin-arabinoside, daunorubicine, fluorouracil, mercaptopurine, methotrexate, dichlorplatinum, procarbazine and the vinca alkaloids. In addition to toxic symptoms arising from single organs the most important 21 anticancer drugs are gathered in a table. Metabolism of activation and inactivation are mentioned to interprete symptoms of toxicity. Furthermore, the interactions between commonly administered drugs and carcinostatics which may enhance or suppress their carcinostatic efficacy are exposed. A final survey of possible pharmacological rescue measures, which may improve the tolerance of anticancer drugs by diminishing their toxicity is presented.

[Alpha 1-antitrypsin level and the state of the respiratory tract in arc welders].

A group of 73 arc welders underwent medical and radiological examinations. In addition, they had serum alpha-1-antitrypsine level determined. Alpha-1-antitrypsine level was found to be normal in 7 (10%) welders displaying symptoms of a chronic nonspecific broncho--pulmonary disease and in 1 subject afflicted by silicosis (all subjects being under 50). This level was within the limits found in welders exhibiting no symptoms of respiratory tract diseases, i.e. 0.84--1.34 mg/ml, according to Eriksson's method.

Daunorubicin reductase activity in leukemia leukocyte homogenates.

Daunorubicin reductase activity was estimated in peripheral leukocytes drawn from 23 patients with acute or chronic leukemia. Since the enzyme converts daunorubicin to daunorubicinol, a derivative exposing higher cytotoxic action than daunorubicin, it is important for leukemia treatment to know its leukocyte level. Calculations of reductase levels were based on the presumption that one enzyme unit equals an activity which is producing 1 nanomol daunorubicinol per 1 mg homogenate protein during 30 minutes of incubation. It was found, that blasts of different patients with the same leukemia type displayed different reductase levels, ranging between 11.0 and 74.8 U.

[Health conditions of a group of factory arc welders].

73 welders were examined, who weld in an assembly room of a machine factory, mainly by an electric arc. In anamneses 60% of persons under examination notified of coughing, expectorating, dyspnoea during work, and frequent acute rhinitis. Clinical symptoms of respiratory tract disease, resulting from welding, were found in 10% of welders. Simple bronchitis, resistant bronchitis with pulmonary emphysema, pleural adhesions were diagnosed. In one case fibronodular tuberculosis was found (1%). In 8% of workers, aged 40--50, a dynamic arterial hypertension and radiological symptoms of aortosclerosis were found. 5% welders had granulocytopenia. Disturbances of the examined systems occurred in factory welders with duration of employment above 10 years.
