Cladosporium bantianum (trichoides) infection of the brain.

A 32 yr old male patient with history of convulsion and bitemporal headache was diagnosed as suffering from tuberculoma based on CT Scan. He worsened after anti-tuberculous therapy. The patient underwent parieto-occipital craniotomy with drainage of abscess. The histopathological examination of brain abscess revealed the infection with cladosporium bantianum. The details of this rare case of opportunist fungal cerebral lesions in healthy individual are reported.

Interferon response depends on viral transcription in human papillomavirus-containing lesions.

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) express various proteins which have been proven to interact with some cellular functions playing a role in cell cycle progression and differentiation. Therefore, these viral gene products might be candidates for interfering with IFN-mediated antiproliferative actions. Condyloma biopsies from patients subsequently demonstrated to be responsive or non-responsive to IFN treatment were investigated. mRNA levels of HPV genes and IFN-responsive genes were determined by RT-PCR and correlated with IFN responsiveness. Patients clinically nonresponsive to IFN demonstrated a characteristic HPV transcriptional activity differing from responder patients. Nonresponders expressed mostly early E7 mRNAs; responders demonstrated higher expression of the late L1 gene. This differential transcription of infecting HPV also correlated with the extent of IFN mediated antiproliferative effect. A hypothesis for further study is that HPV E7 may inhibit IFN responsiveness, while HPV L1 may promote IFN responsiveness.

Management of tracheal stenosis: a report of two cases.

Two patients with post-ventilatory tracheal stenosis were treated by repeated dilatation with oesophageal dilators under general anaesthesia, and direct vision of the fiberoptic bronchoscope. The results of dilatations were remarkable and the patients continue to be asymptomatic after a follow up of more than two years.

Intraparenchymal schwannoma of the frontal lobe.

A 45 year old woman with bifrontal headaches and progressive diminution in vision over 6 months was found to have bilateral papilloedema. CT scan showed large right frontal lesion with surrounding oedema. Right basal frontotemporal craniotomy was performed to excise the multinodular, intraparenchymatous tumor. Hispathology confirmed the diagnosis of schwannoma. Post-operative course was uneventful with disappearance of pre-operative signs and symptoms.

Clival chordoma in an infant.

An unusual case of clival chordoma seen in a 7 month 16 day old infant is presented. The literature on this subject, clinical course of such tumours and the management strategy in paediatric age group is reviewed.

Consecutive cerebellar and cerebral astrocytomas.

An unusual astrocytoma occurring in different anatomical compartments of the brain is reported. The child was operated upon for a cerebellar astrocytoma when he was eight-and-half years old. Seven years later, he was operated for a cerebral astrocytoma. The growth of the similar tumours at these two sites is analysed and literature on the subject is reviewed. The concept of multicentricity is emphasized.
