Structure-activity study on antiinflammatory pyrazole carboxylic acid hydrazide analogs using molecular connectivity indices.

The relationship between molecular connectivity indices and the antiinflammatory activity of a series of pyrazole carboxylic acid hydrazide analogs has been investigated. The values of molecular connectivity index, valence molecular connectivity index, and a modified index, termed as atomic molecular connectivity index for 76 compounds, were computed and active ranges were identified. Each compound was assigned an activity which was subsequently compared with the reported activity against lipoxygenase enzyme. Predictions with a degree of accuracy above 80% were observed using the valence molecular connectivity index.

Plaster of Paris mould for stereotactic frame fixation.

Stereotactic procedures have been prevalent in neurosurgical practice for a prolonged time period. With the advent of new custom-made frames designed for morphologic and functional neurosurgical procedures, its extended use in the pediatric population is becoming increasingly popular. However, there is still a need for sophistication in design and instrumentation. We describe a novel method of a plaster of Paris mould for stereotactic frame fixation, which can be a useful adjunct during frame fixation. It primarily accounts for a remarkable variation in skull shapes and sizes seen in the pediatric population undergoing stereotaxy besides many other advantages.

Epithelioid sarcoma. Report of a case with fine needle aspiration diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare type of soft tissue sarcoma affecting the extremities, particularly the hands and fingers. Though it is well described histopathologically, publications regarding its cytologic findings are limited. CASE: A 52-year-old woman presented with swelling of the left middle finger. Fine needle aspiration was performed. Smears showed oval to polygonal cells with epithelioid features. A diagnosis of soft tissue sarcoma with a possibility of epithelioid sarcoma was suggested. Histopathologic examination and immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis. CONCLUSION: In the presence of classic cytologic findings, the diagnosis of epithelioid sarcoma can be suggested. Subsequent histologic examination and immunohistochemistry can confirm the diagnosis.

Extradural lipomatosis presenting with paraplegia.

An unusual case with spinal extradural lipomatosis in a non-obese and otherwise healthy man is reported. The patient presented with a history of weakness of legs which progressed to paraplegia over a 40 day period.

Tricortical cervical inter-body screw fixation.

A new tricortical method of screw implantation for anterior cervical interbody plate fixation is described. The screws are placed obliquely such that they engage the anterior cortex of the body and traverse through the cortices adjoining the disc space. By this method the screws not only hold the plate firmly with a tricortical purchase, but by virtue of their course stabilize the two adjoining vertebral bodies by themselves. Sixteen patients were treated by this method. In three of these cases only tricortical screws without the metal plate were used for fixation. The advantages of the technique are discussed.

Migration of craniotomy flap: an unusual complication.

An unusual complication following a craniotomy is reported. The free bone flap migrated over the adjacent bone four weeks following surgery and needed operative readjustment. The probable causes for such a complication are analysed and discussed.

Sphenoid wing meningioma--an unusual cause of duro-optic calcification.

Sphenoid ridge is the third commonest site of intracranial meningiomas. Although sphenoid ridge meningiomas often involve the optic canal, calcification along the optic nerve has not been reported with these tumors. We describe CT features of a calcified optic nerve in a patient with a calcified sphenoid ridge meningioma.

Atlantoaxial dislocation associated with stenosis of canal at atlas.

Three rare cases of stenosis of spinal canal at the level of atlas associated with atlantoaxial dislocation are presented. An atlantoaxial lateral mass fixation with plate and screws after posterior midline bony decompression was successfully performed in these cases.

Radiation induced sarcoma following treatment of breast cancer.

The occurrence of radiation induced sarcoma following treatment of breast cancer is rare. It has an average latency of ten years and it correlates with the dose and technique of radiation. The prognosis is poor due to delay in diagnosis. We present a case where a female patient developed a chondrosarcoma of sternoclavicular joint 19 years after radiotherapy for breast cancer.

Diffuse calvarial meningioma: a case report.

A rare case of a diffuse calvarial meningioma in a sixty-three year-old female is reported. The patient presented with headache, painful proptosis and chemosis of the left eye. Imaging showed that the frontoparietal calvarium on both sides and the left orbital roof were thickened. The thickened bone showed patchy rarefaction. In relationship to the thickened bone, there was an enhancing en-plaque meningioma. The tumour extended on to the superolateral aspect of the left orbit and resulted in proptosis. Excision of the left frontoparietal calvarium and the orbital tumour was performed. The management of diffuse calvarial meningioma is discussed and the relevant literature is briefly reviewed.

Cavernous haemangioma in the interpeduncular cistern: case report and review of literature.

A rare case of a cavernous haemangioma in the interpeduncular cistern is reported. The patient, forty-five year old male presented with excruciating left sided trigeminal neuralgia and diplopia for the past one year. Examination revealed left third and fifth nerve paresis. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a well-defined, lobulated tumour in the interpeduncular cistern. The tumour was totally excised through a subtemporal route. Histology of the tumour revealed a cavernous haemangioma. Extracerebral location for a cavernous haemangioma is rare. An interpeduncular cavernous haemangioma has never been reported earlier in literature. The clinical and radiological features are discussed and relevant literature is briefly reviewed.

An unusual periaqueductal glioma: A short report.

A rare case of periaqueductal glioma with an unusual radiological picture is presented. A forty-five year old male presented with progressive bilateral third and eighth nerve paresis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a diffuse periaqueductal tumour with sparing of aqueduct and no hydrocephalus. MRI is a useful adjunct in such a situation for contemplating appropriate modality of treatment.
