HTLV-V: a new human retrovirus isolated in a Tac-negative T cell lymphoma/leukemia.

A new human retrovirus was isolated from a continuous cell line derived from a patient with CD4+ Tac- cutaneous T cell lymphoma/leukemia. This virus is related to but distinct from human T cell leukemia/lymphoma virus types I and II (HTLV-I and HTLV-II) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1). With the use of a fragment of provirus cloned from one patient with T cell leukemia, closely related sequences were found in DNA of the cell line and of tumor cells from seven other patients with the same disease; these sequences were only distantly related to HTLV-I. The phenotype of the cells and the clinical course of the disease were clearly distinguishable from leukemia associated with HTLV-I. All patients and the wife of one patient showed a weak serological cross-reactivity with both HTLV-I and HIV-1 antigens. None of the patients proved to be at any apparent risk for HIV-1 infection. The name proposed for this virus is HTLV-V, and the date indicate that it may be a primary etiological factor in the major group of cutaneous T cell lymphomas/leukemias, including the sporadic lymphomas known as mycoses fungoides.

Tissue distribution, urinary, fecal and biliary excretion of 14C bendazac L-lysine salt in rats.

The distribution of bendazac in the plasma and some rat tissues was studied after single oral administration of 14C bendazac L-lysine salt. The drug is distributed in varying amounts in the liver, kidneys, spleen, muscle, plasma and lens. In these tissues, the drug kinetics is similar, except for the lens where elimination of the drug is slower. More than 80% of the radioactivity administered is excreted through the urine and feces. Fecal excretion is due to the high biliary excretion.

[Hyperbaric oxygen therapy in thrombotic occlusion of the central retinal vein].

The thrombosis of the retina's central vein is a monocular disease and generally touches old women. It causes failure of the sight and lessening of vision field. Experiences in the treatment of three cases with hyperbaric oxygen are reported. It is concluded that this treatment can be advantageously used in this disease.

[Mushroom poisoning: clinical contribution].

Emphasis is placed on the need for a careful appraisal of the history in the diagnostic and prognostic approach to mushroom poisoning. The main syndromes are described and an account is given of the modern treatment of the dramatic pictures caused by phalloides poisoning. A personal case series formed of 118 patients treated between Jan. 1969 and Dec. 1977 is presented. The importance of certain methods, especially dialysis, in the management of phalloides cases is discussed. Stress if laid on the need to hospitalise all persons displaying symptoms referable to the ingestion of mushrooms in suitable equipped centres as soon as possible.

[Personal experience with the use of a computer in an intensive care unit].

In January 1977, the computerized system Hewlett Parkard HP 5600 A was set up in the Resuscitation Center of the "V. Fazzi" Hospital. It is able to play the following functions: management of the data monitors, management of the laboratory data, management of the staff remarks, carrying out of special calculations, logging. The advantages shown by the presence of a computer in a Resuscitation Center justify, in the opinion of the Authors, the expenses and problems of the organization. In fact, the monitoring and computation of both the vital and physical data and of the laboratory parameters, are essential in the therapies selected for a critically ill patient.
