Reduced synthesis of beta-galactosidase in Escherichia coli infected with phage phi X 174.

The synthesis of beta-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23;beta-D-galactoside galactohydrolase) in E. coli was repressed as a result of infection with single-stranded DNA phage phi chi 174. Evidence is presented to show that this repression was not due to the restricted entry of the inducer molecules into the infected cells but to some phage-specified product(s). It was further shown that either the infected cells synthesized a fewer number of enzyme-specific mRNA or all such molecules were translated with a reduced efficiency; the half-lives of the mRNA's remained more or less unaffected.

Steroidal influence on the resynthesis of adrenomedullary hormones. Short communication.

The role of glucocorticoid on the resynthesis of catecholamines was studied in the pigeon. Hydrocortisone was administered to the reserpinized pigeons. The steroid treated birds were autopsied along with the reserpinized controls. It was found that epinephrine production was considerably increased in the steroid treated group, which indicated that hydrocortisone had effectively triggered the methyl transferase activity during the restitution phase of catecholamines.

Lipogranuloma of the uterine parametrium.

A case of lipogranuloma of the uterine parametrium is described. The granuloma may have developed following injury to fat cells after a cone biopsy of the cervix or may have resulted from a reaction to paraffin.

A clinical evaluation of depressives found in a rural survey in India.

Those who were labelled as depressives in a rural survey were randomly divided into a Medicine group (who received antidepressive drug treatment), a Placebo group (who received placebo) and a Natural Process group (who received no treatment). The depth of their depression was assessed by Hamilton's Depressive Rating Scale before the beginning of the trial, on the 14th day and on the 28th day of trial. They were compared with a matched group of healthy controls and again with a matched group of depressives who attended an urban clinic for treatment. The results indicate that the rural depressives who never sought treatment voluntarily were not different from those who sought treatment in clinics, so far as their response to treatment is concerned.

Effect of cadmium on spermatogenesis in toad (Bufo melanostictus).

A quantitative study of seminiferous tubules in toad treated with a single subcutaneous injection of cadmium chloride, showed that 7 days after cadmium injection some stages of spermatogenesis consisting of secondary spermatogonia and primary spermatocytes were decreased significantly.

Neurohypophysial-adrenal gland responses to water-deprivation in the rose-ringed parakeet.

The aim of the present investigation is to study the relative influence of neuohypophysis, adrenal cortex and adrenal medulla under dehydration stress in the parakeet. Birds subjected to dehydration for 7 days lost body weight. Neurosecretory material (NSM) was partially depleted from the neurohypophysis. Adrenal gland weight was increased followed by a hypertrophy of the cortical tissue. A fall in adrenal cholesterol and ascorbic acid level was marked. Adrenaline and noradrenaline contents of the adrenal medulla were suppressed as was evident from cytochemical and biochemical findings. It is suggested that neurohypophysis, adrenal cortex and adrenal medulla are involved in maintaining water homeostasis in this avian species.
