Mechanistic aspects of the reaction between Br2 and chalcogenone donors (LE; E=S, Se): competitive formation of 10-E-3, T-shaped 1:1 molecular adducts, charge-transfer adducts, and [ (LE)2]2+ dications.

The synthesis and spectroscopic characterisation of the products obtained by treatment of N,N'-dimethylimidazolidine-2-thione (1), N,N'-dimethylimidazolidine-2-selone (2), N,N'-dimethylbenzoimidazole-2-thione (3) and N,N'-dimethylbenzoimidazole-2-selone (4) with Br2 in MeCN are reported, together with the crystal structures of the 10-E-3, T-shaped adducts 2 . Br2 (12), 3 . Br2 (13) and 4 . Br2 (14). A conductometric and spectrophotometric investigation into the reaction between 1-4 and Br2, carried out in MeCN, allows the equilibria involved in the formation of the isolated 10-E-3 (E = S, Se) hypervalent compounds to be hypothesised. In order to understand the reasons why S and Se donors can give different product types on treatment with Br2 and I2, DFT calculations have been carried out on 1-8, 19 and 20, and on their corresponding hypothetical [LEX]+ cations (L = organic framework; E = S, Se; X = Br, I), which are considered to be key intermediates in the formation of the different products. The results obtained in terms of NBO charge distribution on [LEX]+ species explain the different behaviour of 1-8, 19 and 20 in their reactions with Br2 and I2 fairly well. X-ray diffraction studies show 12-14 to have a T-shaped (10-E-3; E = S, Se) hypervalent chalcogen nature. They contain an almost linear Br-E-Br (E = S, Se) system roughly perpendicular to the average plane of the organic molecules. In 12, the Se atom of each adduct molecule has a short interaction with the Br(1) atom of an adjacent unit, such that the Se atom displays a roughly square planar coordination. The Se-Br distances are asymmetric [2.529(1) vs. 2.608(1) A], the shorter distance being that with the Br(1) atom involved in the short intermolecular contact. In contrast, in the molecular adducts 13 and 14, which lie on a two-fold crystallographic axis, the Br-E-Br system is symmetric and no short intermolecular interactions involving chalcogen and bromine atoms are observed. The adducts are arranged in parallel planes; this gives rise to a graphite-like stacking. The new crystalline modification of 10, obtained from acetonitrile solution, confirms the importance of short intermolecular contacts in determining the asymmetry of Br-E-Br (E = S, Se) and I-Se-I groups in hypervalent 10-E-3 compounds. The analogies in the conductometric and spectrophotometric titrations of 1 and 2-4 with Br2, together with the similarity of the vibrational spectra of 11-14, also imply a T-shaped nature for 11. The vibrational properties of the Br-E-Br (E = S, Se) systems resemble those of the Br3- and IBr2- anions: the Raman spectrum of a symmetric Br-E-Br group shows only one peak near 160 cm(-1), as found for symmetric Br3- and IBr2- anions, while asymmetric Br-E-Br groups also show an antisymmetric Br-E-Br mode at around 190 cm(-1), as observed for asymmetric Br3- and IBr2- ions. Therefore, simple IR and Raman measurements provide a useful tool for distinguishing between symmetric and asymmetric Br-E-Br groups, and hence allow predictions about the crystal packing of these hypervalent chalcogen compounds to be made when crystals of good quality are not available.

Age effects on the social interaction test in early adulthood male rats.

The effects of age on active and passive social interaction were studied in Wistar rats using the social interaction test (S.I.T.). Individual behaviors such as ambulation, rearing, and defecation were also studied. Despite the widespread use of the S.I.T. in anxiety research, the effects of age on the S.I.T. have not been studied thoroughly. Male Wistar rats of 75, 135, and 180 days old were used. Our results showed age effects on active social contact, passive social contact, ambulation, rearing, and defecation. At 135 days old, animals presented the lowest scores on active social behavior and the highest scores on defecation. Moreover, exploratory behavior measured by ambulation and rearing decreased with age. These results suggest that age could be a relevant variable in the social interaction test.

Urinary tract dysfunction in multiple sclerosis: is there a relation with disease-related parameters?

The lower urinary tract is affected by multiple sclerosis in many patients. We screened urologically and neurologically 120 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. The mean age was 42 years (range 22 to 69 years). Urodynamic investigation as well as neuro-urophysiological investigations were performed in all patients. Renal ultrasound was used to study morphology, and excretory urogram (IVU) was used to assess renal function and the upper urinary tracts in 105 patients. Obstructive symptoms were found more commonly than irritative symptoms. The urinary symptoms were found to be related to disease duration and not to disability status. Urodynamic abnormalities were statistically significantly related to disease duration (X2 = 38.51; P = 0.0001), and to the disability status (X2 = 76.70; P = 0.0001). Few patients, only 3.3%, had upper urinary tract dilatation. With medical management, hydronephrosis disappeared in all of the patients and did not recur. A combination of oral pharmacological agents and clean intermittent catheterization was used in the majority of the patients. We conclude that lower urodynamic abnormalities can be present in every patient with multiple sclerosis, and appear to be related to disease duration and disability status, thus early treatment based upon urodynamic evaluation and close follow-up can reduce morbidity and improve the quality of life.

An analysis of Xq deletions.

We characterized by fluorescence in situ hybridization and Southern blotting 14 partial Xq monosomies, 11 due to terminal deletions and 3 secondary to X/autosome translocations. Three cases were mosaics with a XO cell line. In view of the possible role played by telomeres in chromosome segregation, we hypothesize a relationship between the loss of telomeric sequences in terminal deletions and the presence of 45,X cells. A correlation between phenotype and extent of deletion reveal that there is no correspondence between the size of the deletion and impairment of gonadal function. Turner stigmata are absent in patients without an XO cell line, when the breakpoint is distal to Xq24. A low birthweight is present whenever the breakpoint is at q22 or more proximal.

Perinatal alterations of thyroid hormones and behaviour in adult rats.

Several studies have shown the relevance of the neuroendocrinological system in the development and function of the nervous system. In order to observe the influence of thyroid hormones during development on the behaviour of adult rats we induced dysthyroid states during the perinatal period. Results indicate that some behaviours are more susceptible to the action of thyroid hormones than others. We observed that the thyroid hormone deficiency causes an increase of activity in animals in spite of a large period of rehabilitation. Thyroxine-treated rats showed an anxiogenic behavioural pattern in the elevated plus-maze, while animals rehabilitated from perinatal deficit of thyroid hormones showed an anxiolitic pattern. These findings suggest that an excess of thyroid hormones has less effect on behaviour than a deficiency of these hormones.

Is prolactin related to activity and emotional reactivity in rats?

Recent studies have shown different relationships between hormones and personality in humans, including a relationship between prolactin levels and impulsivity. The aim of the present work was to study the relationships between basal levels of prolactin and some measures of activity and emotional reactivity in rats. One of the most consistent results showed a negative correlation between basal prolactin levels and activity. This finding is in line with the serotonergic theories of impulsive behavior and with the effects of dopamine upon activity.

The maternal-infant center in the control of hepatitis B.

A seroepidemiologic survey of HBV infection was carried out in four population groups served by the Maternity Hospital of Majorca, an island in the Mediterranean. The prevalence of HBV markers (HBsAg, anti-HBs, anti-HBc), determined by enzyme-immunoassay, reached 17.2% among 864 parturients, 17.2% in 783 hospital personnel, 2.7% and 19.2% among the 186 children and 73 husbands of parturients with no HBV markers, 22.8% and 43.8%, respectively, among the 44 children and 48 husbands of HBsAg chronic carrier parturients. The prevalences of HBsAg in the same groups reached 0.9%, 1.5%, 0% and 0%, 11.4% and 2.1%, respectively. The carrier state represents 50% of all infection cases among children and 4.8% among husbands of carrier women. The prevalence of markers, which was especially high among personnel working in maintenance services (39.1%), on surgical wards (35.3%), among midwives (27.6%) and in cleaning and laundry services (27.1%), and laboratories (21.4%), is used as an indicator in defining priorities for the vaccination of people at risk. Sixty-seven newborn babies of HBsAg carrier mothers were administered one dose of HBIG and three doses of hepatitis B vaccine; at 12 months of age, the seroconversion rate was 98.5%, whereas 1 child (1.5%) became a chronic carrier. Maternity hospitals represent the ideal centers in which to carry out the detection of HBsAg in pregnant women prior to parturition, to ensure that all newborns of chronic carrier women receive passive-active immunization, and to screen their family contacts and vaccinate those who are found susceptible to the infection.

Trisomy 16q21 = to qter.

A case of trisomy 16q secondary to a paternal 16/18 translocation is described. A comparison of this case with the few other cases of trisomy 16q described in the literature indicates that trisomy for the long arm of chromosome 16 results in a severely affected phenotype and early death. Conversely, patient with trisomy 16p do not have gross abnormalities. We postulate that the prenatal lethality of full trisomy 16 is mainly due to the trisomy for the long arm.

Three cases of ring chromosome 2, one derived from a paternal 2/6 translocation.

Two cases of primary ring chromosome 2 and one case of a ring secondary to a paternal 2/6 translocation are described and compared with a fourth case of ring 2 from the literature. The breakpoints in two cases are identical and the same as the breakpoint on chromosome 2 in the composite 2/6 ring. The three primary rings have a number of symptoms in common, but other cases are needed to identify a possible deletion syndrome. The levels of the enzyme MDH-1 were within the normal range in Cases 1 and 2. Thus we localised the locus for MDH-1 to segment 2p23 leads to p25; this had previously been localised to segment p23 leads to pter.

[Hormones and aggression].

This work is a review about psychoendocrinologic aspects of aggressive behavior. We have considered two approaches, the classical view focused on hormonal influences in the regulation of aggression and the most recent view which accounts for the influences of aggressive behavior and social status on hormonal secretion. In this review we differentiate the organizational from the activational effects. The main conclusions are referred to the gonadal steroids effects both organization and activation of the neural subtract of aggression. Among them it seems that aromatizable androgens have the most important effects. On the other hand, the testosterone would be predictive for dominant social status, the corticosterone would be for submission and finally, the ACTH would be predictive for the aggressive behavior but not for submission. In addition to that the literature point that the defeat experience is the main factor in submission. Referred to the effects of behavior on hormonal secretions, all the studies point out that social interaction elicits sympathetic-medullar and gonadal activation in the dominant animals and cortico-adrenal activation in the submissive ones.
