Direct observation of condon domains in silver by Hall probes.

Using a set of micro Hall probes for the detection of the local induction, the inhomogeneous Condon domain structure has been directly observed at the surface of a pure silver single crystal under strong Landau quantization in magnetic fields up to 10 T. The inhomogeneous induction occurs in the theoretically predicted part of the Condon domain phase diagram. Information about size, shape, and orientation of the domains is obtained by analyzing Hall probes placed along and across the long sample axis and by tilting the sample. On a beryllium surface the induction inhomogeneity is almost absent although the expected induction splitting here is at least 10 times higher than in silver.

Hysteresis in the de Haas-van Alphen effect.

A hysteresis loop is observed for the first time in the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect of beryllium at low temperatures and quantizing magnetic field applied parallel to the hexagonal axis of the single crystal. The irreversible behavior of the magnetization occurs at the paramagnetic part of the dHvA period in conditions of Condon domain formation arising by strong enough dHvA amplitude. The resulting extremely nonlinear response to a very small modulation field offers the possibility to find in a simple way the Condon domain phase diagram. From a harmonic analysis, the shape and size of the hysteresis loop is constructed.

Quantum magneto-oscillations in a supramolecular Mn(II)-[3 x 3] grid.

The magnetic grid molecule Mn(II)-[3 x 3] has been studied by high-field torque magnetometry at 3He temperatures. At fields above 5 T, the torque versus field curves exhibit an unprecedented oscillatory behavior. A model is proposed which describes these magneto-oscillations well.

Topological oscillations of the magnetoconductance in disordered GaAs layers.

Oscillatory variations of the diagonal (Gxx) and Hall (G(xy)) magnetoconductances are discussed in view of topological scaling effects giving rise to the quantum Hall effect. They occur in a field range without oscillations of the density of states due to Landau quantization, and are, therefore, totally different from the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. Such oscillations are experimentally observed in disordered GaAs layers in the extreme quantum limit of applied magnetic field with a good description by the unified scaling theory of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect.

Current-driven resonances in magnetic multilayers.

We describe complex variations in resistance of a Co/Cu multilayer, generated by injection of an adjustable dc current density ( approximately 10(9) A/cm(2)) via a point contact. We attribute these variations to coupling of current-induced spin waves to lattice vibrations, leading especially to current-driven resonant excitations of phonons. We propose a simple model to explain the observed structured behavior of the variations as a function of the applied current and magnetic field.

Anomalous magnetic field dependence of the thermodynamic transition line in the isotropic superconductor (K,Ba)BiO3.

Thermodynamic (specific heat, reversible magnetization, tunneling spectroscopy) and transport measurements have been performed on high quality (K,Ba)BiO3 single crystals. The temperature dependence of the magnetic field H(C(p)) corresponding to the onset of the specific heat anomaly presents a clear positive curvature. H(C(p)) is significantly smaller than the field H(Delta) for which the superconducting gap vanishes but is closely related to the irreversibility line deduced from transport data. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the reversible magnetization presents a strong deviation from the Ginzburg-Landau theory emphasizing the peculiar nature of the superconducting transition in this material.

Observation of magnetic level repulsion in Fe6:Li molecular antiferromagnetic rings.

Heat capacity (C), magnetic torque, and proton NMR relaxation rate (1/T(1)) measurements were performed on Fe6:Li single crystals in order to study the crossings between S = 0 and S = 1 and between S = 1 and S = 2 magnetic states of the molecular rings, at magnetic fields B(c1) = 11.7 T and B(c2) = 22.4 T, respectively. C vs B data at 0.78 K show that the energy gap between two states remains finite at B(c)'s (Delta(1)/k(B) = 0.86 K and Delta(2)/k(B) = 2.36 K) thus proving that levels repel each other. The large Delta(1) value may also explain the anomalously large width of the peak in 1/T(1) vs B, around B(c1). This anticrossing, unexpected in a centrosymmetric system, requires a revision of the Hamiltonian.

Entropy of vortex cores near the superconductor-insulator transition in an underdoped cuprate.

We present a study of Nernst effect in underdoped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 in magnetic fields as high as 28 T. At high fields, a sizable Nernst signal was found to persist in the presence of a field-induced nonmetallic resistivity. By simultaneously measuring resistivity and the Nernst coefficient, we extract the entropy of vortex cores in the vicinity of this field-induced superconductor-insulator transition. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the thermoelectric Hall angle provides strong constraints on the possible origins of the finite Nernst signal above T(c), as recently discovered by Xu et al. [Nature (London) 406, 486 (2000)].
