In 78 healthy term babies from Düsseldorf and surroundings spontaneous urine samples were collected on day 108 to day 144 of life and analyzed for the content of iodine and creatinine. 26 babies were breast fed. 23 babies received an iodized hypoallergenic formula and 26 babies different commercial formulas only partly iodized. From 4 parameters to estimate iodine supply of the babies (urinary iodine concentration microgram/dl, iodine/creatinine ratio microgram/g; estimated daily iodine excretion microgram/d, estimated daily iodine excretion corrected for body surface area microgram/dl 1.73 m2) estimated daily iodine excretion was the most useful parameter. Breast fed babies showed a significantly lower estimated daily iodine excretion (median 32 microgram/d) than babies fed the hypoallergenic (52 microgram/d) or a commercial formula (54 micrograms/d). In Germany with an insufficient iodine supply of pregnant and lactating mothers breast fed infants run a risk for an insufficient iodine supply. Furthermore, supplementation of infant formulas with iodine started in 1990/1991 proved to be a sufficient measure to correct iodine deficiency.
INTRODUCTION: Heart rate variability (HRV) is reduced in adults and children after cardiac transplantation. Testing of HRV has been used to assess re-innervation of the cardiac graft; its reliability in ruling out acute graft rejection is still under investigation. This study used a short-term test on HRV in 23 heart and heart-lung transplanted children and adolescents and compared the results with 24-h ECG recordings. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-three subjects (16.3+/-4.2 yr; 10 females) underwent a 10-min HRV test at two occasions and one 24-h ECG. HRV was calculated according to the time domain method (RR interval, standard deviation of RR interval) and the frequency domain method (total power, LF and HF for assessment of sympathovagal modulation of heart rate). RESULTS: Correlation between the short-term tests and 24-h ECG was high with regard to the frequency domain analysis of HRV. Correlation was less pronounced in the time domain method. CONCLUSIONS: In heart and heart-lung-transplanted children and adolescents, due to reduced overall HRV short-term testing may give as reliable data as 24-h ECG. Therefore, especially when power spectral analysis has to be performed as a longitudinal assessment of re-innervation of the cardiac graft, short-term testing may offer an easily applicable and non-invasive diagnostic tool. Further studies are warranted to investigate whether HRV testing may contribute to rule out acute graft rejection.
A 5.5-year-old, male, feline leucosis virus-positive cat developed a concurrent dermatophytosis due to Microsporum canis and a subcutaneous infection due to Staphylotrichum coccosporum. St. coccosporum caused mycetoma-like lesions. The fungal elements revealed features like those seen in phaeohyphomycosis. Until now St. coccosporum has been described to be non-pathogenic. The pathogenicity of St. coccosporum was corroborated by experimental infection.
Deep and superficial body temperatures were measured by in vitro and in vivo experiments, using a fluoroptic procedure and a variety of magnetic and electromagnetic fields, in the course of magnetic resonance imaging (0.35 T; 1.5 T). In vitro experiments were performed to select and check the appropriate temperature method. Temperature measurements in the human body were carried out centrally (esophageal and rectal measurements). In vivo experiments in 30 volunteers showed no significant changes (p = 0.05) in central or peripheral temperatures resulting from the application of static or dynamic fields or radiofrequency.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of intracerebral haematoma due to aneurysmal rupture on vasospasm evaluated by transcranial Doppler ultrasound and outcome according to Glasgow Outcome Scale. 368 patients with ruptured intracranial aneurysm were admitted to the Department of Neurosurgery, Medical Academy in Wrocław, between January 1, 1995 and June 30, 1998. Patients were divided into two groups. In group I there were 74 patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage and intracerebral haematoma. In group II 294 patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage. Despite intensive monitoring and treatment the outcome of patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage and intracerebral haematoma is worse than in patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage only.
Some of the clinical hallmarks of lateral medullary infarction--Wallenberg's syndrome--are saccadic dysmetria, smooth pursuit deficit, and lateropulsion of the body. Similar movement disorders are seen in monkeys after local unilateral injection of GABAergic drugs in the caudal fastigial nucleus of monkeys. These include an ipsilateral saccadic hypermetria and a contralateral saccadic hypometria as well as cogwheel smooth pursuit eye movements toward the contralateral side and an ipsiversive lateropulsion of the body. It was previously suggested that the lateral medullary infarction causes a lesion of climbing fibers to the cerebellum. This lack of climbing fiber input increases the activity of ipsilateral Purkinje cells, which consequently provide too much inhibition of the deep cerebellar nuclei.
