[What should be known of the Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease? (author's transl)].
The Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease is an unusual affection, characterized by a meningeal syndrome, an ocular syndrome involving the anterior or posterior segment of the eye, and at last, manifestations of skin involvement such as poliosis, vitiligo and alopecia. Nowadays, the physiopathologic hypothesis, the most admitted, is the one of auto-immune process regarding the uveal pigment. Nosologically speaking, clinical epidemiologic and etiopathogenic arguments have allowed to join the Harada and Vogt-Koyanagi diseases under the same name: the Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease. The same arguments, except the epidemiologic ones, allow to make a similarity between this affection and uveo-meningitis on the hand, sympathetic ophthalmitis on the other hand. The use of oral corticosteröids and eventually immuno-suppressive agents constitute the only therapeutic methods, nowadays.

[Real-time ultrasonographic study of the parathyroid glands. Apropos of 100 explorations].
The authors using high resolution (8 MHz) real-time echotomography have explored 100 patients. They certify that the presence of little hypoechogenic spicules at the periphery of a mass is strongly in relation with a parathyroid. They found in 17 patients signs of hypertrophic parathyroid; 8 of these had surgery with very good results for echotomography in 7 cases. Localizing parathyroid masses before surgery did not shorter time of exploration in these 8 cases. Ultrasonography, if positive, may relate biological troubles to a parathyroid etiology. It appears, that echotomography is a method of choice to survey chronic hemodialysis.

vitamin compounds to the basic dialytic treatment of renal osteodystrophy is of contestable interest. Because 1) optimum conditions of dialysis without D vitamin addition prevent efficiently the progress of severe gyperparathyroidism and osteomalacia 2) the D vitamin compunds could render the phosphatemia control more difficult thus contributing to aggravate the histologic lesions of hyperparathyroidism.

[Results of vascular repairs in trauma of the femoral veins, iliac veins and the inferior vena cava].
We examined the records of 12 patients operated for lesions of the inferior vena cava, the iliac vein, or the common femoral vein were examined. The results of venous grafts, treatment of the lesions of the posterior inferior vena cava or the supra hepatic vena cava and the permeability after repair of these large vessels was studied. Treatment included simple suture (n = 9), venous patch (lateral iliac vein, n = 1), and venous autografts (common femoral veins, n = 2). For 3 lesions of the posterior or supra-hepatic inferior vena cava, haemostasis was obtain by double clamping (n = 2) or four-way clamping (n = 1) with right hepatectomy. In 9 cases, the patients were followed-up for a mean of 59 months. Morphologic exploration with phlebography (n = 1) or echo-Doppler examination (n = 7) was performed during the follow-up period. There were no post-operative deaths. There were no functional sequellae affecting the lower limbs. In one case, the echo-Doppler examination revealed repermeabilization of a thrombosed lateral iliac vein after simple suture. Lesion repair of large diameter veins with autografts using the internal jugular or internal saphenous vein gave good results. Haemostais of posterior or supra-hepatic lesions to the inferior vena cava was obtained with clamping. In cases with associated hepatic involvement, haemostasis was controlled with a four-way clamp and trans-hepatic access or digitoclasty. Long-term permeability of venous repair was good.

Structure of human calcitonin gene-related peptide (hCGRP) and of its antagonist hCGRP 8-37 as determined by NMR and molecular modeling.
The solution structures of human calcitonin gene-related peptide (hCGRP, 37 residues) and of its antagonistic fragment hCGRP 8-37 have been determined by two-dimensional 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and molecular modeling. Analysis of the double quantum filtered correlation spectroscopy, total correlation spectroscopy and nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy spectra led to a complete assignment and to the identification of more than 350 intra- and interresidue connectivities for each peptide. Molecular models were calculated by molecular dynamics and energy minimization using distance constraints. The structure of hCGRP is characterized by a rigid N-terminal disulfide-bonded loop followed by helix segments (Val8-Leu16), a gamma-turn (Ser19-Gly21) and several local hydrogen-bonded patterns. The structure of hCGRP 8-37 is less defined than the structure of hCGRP and no helix structure is present. Molecular models of both peptides are consistent with the NH temperature coefficients and secondary chemical shifts of the alpha-protons. Hydrogen bonding with the disulfide-bonded ring appears to be critical for helix formation, both structural elements being essential for agonistic activity.

Pulsed flow cascade filtration. Long-term experience in low density lipoprotein and lipoprotein a removal.
The authors present the results of pulsed flow cascade filtration (PFCF) for low density lipoprotein (LDL) and lipoprolein a (La) removal in four patients with familial hypercholesterolemia. Forty-six treatments were performed. Pressure and flow pulsations were superimposed on the retentate of the secondary filter using a modified single roller peristaltic pump. The pulsation frequency was adjusted to achieve, on average, zero retentate flow (dead end filtration). The transmembrane pressure and sieving coefficients of immunoglobulin G, apolipoprotein A1, and apolipoprotein B of the secondary filter remained constant during filtration periods of 150 min. The PFCF technique was found to remove more LDL and La than did adsorption on dextran sulfate columns, while maintaining adequate albumin recovery (90%).
