PURPOSE: A clinical epidemiological research was conducted in Sardinia on a sample of hig school students to survey the preminence of obesity and overweight during adolescence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 304 normal subjects were examined, 161 males and 143 females ranging between 16 and 18 years of age. For each subject the index of body mass was considered then compared to the standard values of population using Hamil schedules. RESULTS: The survey revealed a normal weight in mostly of the teen-agers. Obesity was observed however in 23.6% of males and in 5.6% of females on what was seen the percentage of overweight or excessively fat subjects is below the percentage of underweight teen-agers (21% of males and 43% of females). CONCLUSIONS: This difference could be considered the proof of a particular adolescential attitude that seen as a positive aim and is identified with social acceptance and sexual attraction especially among girls. This is confirmed by the fact that when questioned a great number of teen-agers admitted they were or they had been on a diet to lo lose weight.
PURPOSE: A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the medical therapy with synthetic hormone levothyroxine (L-T4) in the elderly subjects with multinodular euthyroid goiter. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 187 elderly subjects (34 males and 153 females) ranging between 63 and 85 years of age with multinodular euthyroide goiter were examined. For each subject has been calculated the index of body mass (BMI) which has consented the identify two groups of subjects: the elderly patients with normal weight and the obese subjects. RESULTS: In the mostly of the patients (82%), both normal weight and obese, the L-T4 therapy has not determined significant changes either of the dimensions or the number of the nodules. In the obese subjects the L-T4 therapy has not caused decrease of weight at least to the 20% of the initial body weight. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the research have proved the limited effectiveness of the suppressive therapy with levothyroxine in the reduction of the volume and/or of the number of the nodules, without however denying the usefulness in the preventing the worsening of the nodular disease of thyroid. The study also has revealed that the therapy with levothyroxine is ineffective for the body weight reduction in the obese subjects.
The authors reviewed 260 cases of bone tumors localized in the foot and treated at the Tumor Center of the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute: 191 were benign and 58 malignant and 11 metastasis. There was predilection for the hindfoot (57%), followed by the forefoot (33%) (prevalently the metatarsals). Localizations in the midfoot were rare (10%). Osteoid osteoma was observed in 26% of all of the tumors of the foot and in 35% of the benign forms. Among malignant neoplasms Ewing's sarcoma (27.5%) was the most frequent. Conservative surgery, which was always carried out in benign tumors, was also performed in some of the malignant ones, having an early diagnosis and a correct preoperative study. The indications and the limits of the different imaging techniques available are reported (bone scan, arteriography, CAT, MRI), and the role of biopsy in the definitive diagnosis of these neoplasms in discussed.
Four cases of supracondylar process of the humerus are presented. Two of the patients were asymptomatic and in one of these the supracondylar process was fractured. In a third there was median nerve compression and in the last there was ulnar nerve entrapment. The anatomical features, clinical symptoms and therapy are described. Good results were obtained after resection of the supracondylar process; neurological symptoms regressed one month after surgery.
Glycoproteins recognized by Ulex europaeus lectin I, specific for fucose residues, have been identified in chromatin prepared from pig liver, heart and kidney nuclei. They are present among the proteins dissociated from DNA with salt solutions and, in higher amount, among the proteins dissociated with urea and guanidine. In any case these fucose-containing glycoproteins appear to have a marked tissue specificity, which suggests that they have specific regulatory roles in the processes taking place in the nuclei.
Among possible localizations of chondrosarcoma of the limbs, the hand and foot represent the rarest sites. Five-hundred six cases of chondrosarcoma have been observed at the Tumor Center of the Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute. Of these, 4 were localized in the hand and 10 in the foot. The authors compared their cases with those reported in the international literature. The authors emphasize the particular aspects of the tumor when localized in these sites which may be responsible for late diagnosis and difficulty in differential diagnosis involving synovial chondromatosis and, above all, chondroma, from which chondrosarcoma may originate.
cAMP phosphodiesterase was partially purified from pig liver nuclei and some of its properties were investigated. The enzyme is a low km PDE. Inhibition by xanthine derivatives is in line with the behaviour of PDE from other mammalian sources, while small differences are observed towards nucleotides inhibitors. The enzyme is a chromatin-bound protein although no specific location related to transcriptional function could be demonstrated.

Carbohydrate content of non-histone proteins from pig liver chromatin has been measured in different groups of chromatin fractions and does not seem to be related to the affinity of the proteins for DNA. Glycoproteins are preferentially located in the nuclease-sensitive fractions of chromatin. A 59,000 dalton glycoprotein has been identified as a characteristic components of a chromatin fraction solubilized by DNAase II.

Four cases of calcific tendinitis of the gluteus maximus are presented. Knowledge of the precise anatomic location of the calcium deposit achieved with conventional radiography and computed tomography and the clinical history are characteristic of this disorder.
Pathologic fractures in tumors and tumor-like lesions of bone are a rare occurrence. It is for this reason that excessive treatment of benign tumors, erroneous treatment of malignant ones, or abstention from any form of therapy in metastatic forms are often observed. The authors report the main indications for treatment in different types of neoplasms in an attempt to classify therapeutic behavior in relation to histotype and preoperative staging. Furthermore, the most common errors in treatment are defined, and the principal mechanisms of consolidation of pathologic fracture, and epidemiologic features of the different types of fracture are revealed.
Twenty-one patients affected with malignant fibrous histiocytoma localized in the limbs were treated by pre- and postoperative chemotherapy (neoadjuvant). Preoperatively methotrexate (i.v.), cisplatinum (i.a.), and adriamycin (i.v.) were administered. Postoperatively the same drugs (in patients who responded well) or with the addition of ifosfamide and VP 16 (in those who responded poorly) were administered. Twenty resections and 1 amputation followed. The response to chemotherapy was good in 7 patients, and poor in 14. At a mean follow-up of 6.3 years 15 patients were disease-free and 6 had relapses. These results appear to be comparable to those for 144 patients affected with osteosarcoma of the limbs treated at the same time with the same protocol. The percentage of good responses and pulmonary metastases was higher in cases of osteosarcoma. Pre- and postoperative chemotherapy increases the percentage of healing in malignant fibrous histiocytoma. The lower percentage of good responses and the different type of relapse as compared to osteosarcoma indicate that preoperatively chemotherapy different from that used for osteosarcoma should be conducted.
