[Changes in paO2 and of acid-base equilibrium of the arterial blood of hypoxemic polyglobulic patients subjected to acute blood depletion].

Partial respiratory gas tension and acid-base equilibrium patterns were examined in polyglobulic patients subjected to acute blood depletion. The increase in oxyhaemoglobin concentration and fall in haematocrit value already described were confirmed. It was also noted that: 1) pH increased significantly in all subjects; 2) urinary osmolarity increased in all subjects; 3) blood sodium and potassium concentration increased significantly in 14 patients (1st group), but fell in the 2nd group (8 subjects). It is suggested, therefore, that acute blood depletion changes renal reabsorption of the main electrolytes, i.e. increased values in cases where a fall in glomerular arteriolar pressure leads to increased renal medullary osmolarity, and decreased values where a fall in circulation leads to increased arteriolar pressure, hyperosmolarity of the medulla, and retainment of liquids as opposed to electrolytes.

Acid-Base Equilibrium↗

[Function of time (circadian and daily) of the hematocrit value evaluated in healthy and sick subjects].

Haematocrit values in function of time were studied in normal subjects and chronic cardiopathoic and bronchopneumopathic patients in clinical steady-state not receiving treatment. No significant changes were noted over the period 8-12 a.m., during the circadian (12hr) cycle, or at 8 a.m. each day for 5 consecutive days in normal subjects. While equally insignificant, variations were more marked in the diseased patients.

Centrifugation↗

[Spontaneous variations of the hematocrit value in chronic bronchopneumopathic patients under medical treatment].

Haematocrit values were studied in chronic bronchitis patients receiving medical treatment during hospitalisation. Both decreases and increases were noted. Statistically significant, they may be regarded as spontaneous, since they occurred in the absence of depletion management. Furthermore, they offer better prognosis for respiratory insufficiency, since they are a pointer to better wash distribution, probably attributable to diminished alveolar hypertension.

[In vitro effects of saluretics, osmotic pressure and the acidity of the medium on the evaluated globular volume in chronic bronchopneumopathies by means of microhematocrit].

The in vitro effect of diuretics, osmotic pressure and acidity of the medium on red cell volume was examined. The results showed that:1) diuretics lead to a reduction in volume;2) this reduction is enhanced at higher concentrations; 3) the effect is more noticeable in more diluted blood; 4) a decrease in volume is also displayed by cells whose volume has been increased by hypo-osmotic solutions; 5) this effect is not apparent when cell volume is reduced to the minium by hypersmotic solutions;6) the effect of the pH value is only felt in the case of extreme variations.

Acid-Base Equilibrium↗

[Behavior of hematocrit values in chronic bronchopneumatic patients during administration of saluretics].

Changes in haematocrit values were determined in chronic bronchitis patients undergoing water depletion with diuretics. Unchanged, increased and decreased values were observed. The results were statistically significant and indicated that: 1) increases correspond to a decrease in the amount of extracellular water; 2) decreases represent intracellular water loss and subsequent transfer of water to the circulation; 3) diuretics lead to redistriction of water in the body.

[Influence of the ventilation mechanics on the hematocrit value. I. Research in rabbits subjected to experimental pneumothorax].

Changes in haematocrit value in rabbits subjected to pneumothorax were studied. Significant increases and decreases were noted following pneumothorax and desufflation respectively. These are attributed to modifications of lung and systemic haemodynamics, resulting in diminished reflux to the heart and a consequent increase in capillary hydrostatic pressure; the latter provides the premisses for inspissation of the blood due to displacement of water towards the interstitial space.

[Influence of the ventilation mechanics on the hematocrit value. II. Research on patients subjected to pleural and pericardial punctures].

Changes in haematocrit values in rabbits subjected to pleural and pericardial puncture were studied. Highly significant decreases were noted. These are attributed to lung re-expansion with redistribution of the capillary bed, together with improved venous reflux, with predominance of the first or second phenomenon for each group. Better redistribution of the circulating blood mass results from these changes.

[Effects of oxygen therapy on the hematocrit value in hypoxemic, chronic bronchopneumopathies].

Changes in haematocrit values were studied in hypoxaemic chronic bronchitis patients subjected to oxygen-therapy. A statistically significant decrease was observed in all cases after respiration of oxygen. This was partly attributable to resolution of vasoconstrictive reflexes imposed by prior oxygen starvation, due to shifting of part of the circulating mass from the systemic to the pulmonary circulation, and partly to improved ventilation yield; this, couplled with reduced cardiac frequency and output, facilitates a more efficient thoracic aspiration of the reflux blood.
