The author studies the complications that can occur in the lumbar spine operations particularly in the disc protrusion surgeries. The pre, intra and post-operative complications as well as the early and late complications were analysed. The factors that may lead to bad surgical results are discussed.
The treatment of herniated lumbar disc by non-surgical procedures, through automated percutaneous discectomy, was introduced in Brazil by the authors in 1988. In this preliminary report the results obtained with this method in three patients are presented. Existing literature mentions a rate of 80% successful results in selected cases submitted to this treatment.
