The authors studies bone mineral density (BMD) was studied by ultrasound densitometry of the calcaneus on an Achilles + device (Lunar, USA) and phosphorus and calcium metabolism in patients with vibration disease. The patients' age ranged from 41 to 61 years. A control group comprised 88 healthy males of the same age. Long-term exposure to systemic and local vibration causes a reduction in the mineral density of bony tissue in the presence of slightly enhanced bone resorption.
Examining 80 males with vibration disease has shown a significant increase in their biological age (particularly in patients with vibration disease due to exposure to second-degree general vibration) as compared with that in the control group, which is indicative of the role of these factors in the acceleration of the body's aging processes.
X-ray absorptiometry was used to study bone tissue in male patients with vibration disease caused by local and general vibration. The neck of the femur and the lumbar vertebral column were under study. The data obtained from examination of 19 apparently healthy males of the same age who served as a control. The parameters that characterizes bone tissue density tended to decrease in patients with vibration disease. The less marked decrease in bone density in the vertebral column than in neck of the femur is explained by the development of osteochondrosis in this category of patients.
