Management of an anterior defect with a removable partial denture supported by implants and residual teeth: a case report.

The treatment of a patient with a major defect in the anterior region of the mandible is described. A large part of the anterior dental arch and underlying mandibular bone was involved in the defect. A removable partial denture supported by implants as well as residual teeth was used to restore the defect. Compared with a traditional removable partial denture, which was used by the patient for several years as an interim prosthesis, the application of implants resulted in improved functional comfort and stability.

The use of adhesive metal partial crowns to restore attrition defects: a case report.

A patient presented with severe loss of enamel on the palatal surface of the maxillary anterior teeth, resulting from attrition. After correction of the mandibular occlusal position, the palatal defects were restored with metal partial crowns cemented with an adhesive cement. One of the six restorations dislodged during 4 years of observation, but was replaced successfully.

[Removable partial dentures, recent developments].

Improved preventive measures, clinical experience and improved laboratorial procedures have resulted in changes in the design of the removable partial denture. More attention is paid to esthetics, support of free-extension dentures and the biological consequences of the design. Possibilities in prosthodontics concerning these aspects are described.

[Position of removable partial dentures within prosthetic dentistry].

Recent developments in restorative dentistry resulted in a shift towards elderly patients with regard to the application of removable partial dentures (RPD). The half life time of a metal frame RPD is ten years. Negative effects of a RPD on the remaining dentition can be prevented by adequate oral hygiene, which is supervised in a recall program with an individually adjusted interval. Periodontal factors seem to be more important in the design of a RPD than biomechanical factors. Simplicity is a prime guideline in the design, especially in free-end situations.

[Treatment planning in partial prosthodontics].

The aim of the initial treatment is to eliminate active complicating factors from the partial edentulous mouth, such as caries, periodontal disease and occlusal discrepancies. After evaluation of the results of the initial treatment the prosthetic treatment can be started. A specific preparation of the mouth is necessary to accommodate the remaining dentition to the design of the removable partial denture.

[Clinical procedures in removable partial prosthodontics].

Restoring oral function with removable partial dentures includes treatments running along several steps and procedures. These treatments should be carefully planned. The dentist should know the steps to be taken to achieve the desired end result.

[Tooth replacement in the anterior region: specific problems and standard options].

The problems involved in the loss of anterior teeth differ essentially from those in the premolar/molar region. Firstly, missing anterior teeth result in unacceptable changes in appearance and speech, making treatment mandatory. Secondly, the dentist has to consider specific aspects, such as aesthetics, resorption of the alveolar bone, loading of the abutment teeth, form of the clinical crown and incisal guidance. Treatment options comprise orthodontic closure, periodontally supported removable and fixed appliances and appliances supported by implants. The advantages and disadvantages of the different options are indicated.

[Natural dentition of the elderly. An occlusal concept].

Treatment of the impaired dentition of the elderly has to be focused on maintaining the strategic natural teeth. This means not necessarily the preservation of all teeth. At least a minimal functional level should be preserved.
