[Cellular immune response detected in blast transformation test with lymphocytes from rabbits immunized with nucleocapsid of herpes simplex type 2 virus].

A preparation of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) nucleocapsid (NC) was obtained after treatment of intracellular virus with detergents followed by centrifugation in linear sucrose density gradient. Electron microscopic analysis revealed polymorphism of HSV-2 NC population. Three main types of capsid structures were found: empty capsids, NC containing various amounts of nucleoid material, and NC with complete nucleoid. Morphological heterogeneity correlated with heterogenous sedimentation profile of the total NC preparation of labeled virus represented by light, intermediate, and heavy structures. Specific blasttranformation tests with lymphocytes from rabbits immunized with HSV-2 NC demonstrated differences in the primary and secondary cellular immune responses. The secondary cellular immune response was characterized by a more rapid and strong increase in BTT values than the primary immune response.

[Specificity of the human "leukocytic virus of leukemia"].

The evidence has been obtained indicating the presence of the antigen of leukocyte leukosis virus (LLV) in specimens from patients with leukosis. Immunofluorescence tests with rabbit immune serum to LLV revealed specific fluorescence of the cytoplasm of cells in 19 out of 32 bone marrow punctates and leukocytes in 10 out of 12 blood smears from patients with acute leukosis and chronic myeloleukosis. In these tests, the difference from analogous control materials (from donors, patients with polyarthritis, reticulosclerodermia, mveloma, etc. is highly statistically significant. By the CFT, antibody to LLV-infected cells were detected in 60.8% of patients with leukosis and 18.5% of donors. When examined by the gel precipitation test with the appropriate test-systems LLV antigen was found to contain no group-specific antigen of murine leukosis virus or antigen of oncornaviris D from HEp-2 continuous cell line.

[Humoral immunity factors in the pathogenesis of recurrence in chronic herpetic infection].

A comparative study of various factors of humoral immunity in human chronic herpes stomatitis (CHS) in periods of relapses and remission of the infection showed the exacerbations of the disease to occur in the presence of complement-fixing (CF) and virus-neutralizing (VN) antibodies in the blood serum the titres of which moderately rose with the progress of the infection. A relapse of the disease occurs during marked decline in the content of secretory IgA and true secretory Sc-IgA, serum and secretory IgG, low levels of serum interferon, and a small rise in titres of 19S specific CF antibodies. Remission comes as these values become normal. Although specific immunological changes do occur in CHS, they are not very marked, whereas the factors of nonspecific host resistance change considerably in close correlation with the periods of relapse and remission of the infection.

[Cellular immunity factors in the pathogenesis of recurrences of chronic herpetic infection].

Comparative studies of various factors of cellular immunity in human chronic herpetic stomatitis (CHS) in periods of relapses and remission of the infection revealed no significant changes in specific cellular immune response, blasttransformation of lymphocytes to herpes simplex virus antigen. At the same time, the indices of nonspecific cellular responsiveness: the rosette-forming activity of T-lymphocytes and the level of leukocyte interferon were markedly reduced in the period of recurrence of the infection and increased as remission developed. The role of immune factors in the pathogenesis of herpes relapses is discussed.

[Comparative characteristics of influenza virus A/USSR/02/76 and swine influenza virus].

Comparative studies of the biological properties, antigenic structure and ultrastructure of influenza A viruses isolated in the USSR, A/New Jersey/8/76 and A/swine/31 were carried out. Antigenic differences between A/USSR/02/76 and A/swine/31 strains as well as A/New Jersey/8/76 strain were found in the hemagglutination-inhibition and neuraminidase activity-inhibition tests. These differences were confirmed by serological examination of human sera.

[Virus-like particles in the sera of patients with viral hepatitis and donors with antigenemia].

Isopicnic centrifugation in cesium chloride gradient produces sufficiently homogeneous fractions of large (42--45 nm) and small (20--22 nm) particles detectable in sera from patients with viral hepatitis and donors with antigenemia. In addition to morphological criteria, differences between these particles were indicated by a greater buoyant density (1.24 g/cm3), higher sensitivity to lower pH values and a lower resistance between. No antigenic determinats inherent in small particles could be found in large particles.

[Effect of exogenous interferon on the course of latent oncornavirus infection of J-96 cells].

The effect of exogenous leukocyte interferon on the course of chronic oncornavirus infection of lymphoblastoid J-96 cells chronically producing type B virus was studied. By means of radio-isotope analysis and electron microscope examinations it was shown that upon long-term passage of the cells (18-34 passages) in the presence of interferon (10 units/ml) the process of virion formation in the cells was inhibited 2.0-4.4-fold and virus budding to a lower extent (1.6-2.7-fold). Interferon exerted no inhibiting effect on the formation of intracytoplasmic virions of type A. The employment of KC-test showed the oncornavirus produced by J-96 cells in the presence of interferon to have retained its biological activity, being able to induce synthesis of the indicator KC cells. Examination of the cell membranes by electrophoresis in polyacryl amide gel showed that interferon contributed to accumulation of glycoproteins with high molecular weights (115 000, 100 000 and 68 ooo daltons) in this cell fraction. Simultaneously the experimental cells were found to have 2-3-fold increased amount of inter-species group-specific antigen of Mason-Pfizer virus. The mechanism of action of interferon on multiplication of J-96 cell oncornavirus is discussed.
