Family dynamics in families with very low birth weight and full-term infants: a pilot study.

The purpose of this pilot study was to determine differences in family health across six dimensions of functioning between families with a very low birth weight infant (VLBW) and families with a full-term infant. An epidemiologic model and Barnhill's (1979) system theory of healthy family dynamics provided the organizing framework for the study. Sixteen families with a VLBW infant and 25 families with a full-term infant were assessed for differences in family health across Barnhill's six dimensions. Independent t-tests showed no significant differences on the five dimensions of infant behavioral style. While a 2 x 3 MANOVA showed no significant differences on any of the measures by family, the Turkey HSD post hoc tests for main effect found significant differences related to the mothers' position within the family, Specifically, the position the mother maintains in the family significantly contributes to certain dimensions of family health.

School health projects: an extended learning experience for pediatric graduate students.

Practice in integration of all role behaviors of the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a key concern of nurse educators in planning clinical learning experiences for the CNS student. If integration of role behaviors is minimal in the CNS graduate, effective functioning in today's complex health delivery system is compromised. A description of a three consecutive quarter opportunity to incorporate the role behaviors of the CNS is presented.

Nursing journals read and assigned most often in doctoral programs.

Five doctoral faculty members were randomly selected from each faculty group of 35 doctoral programs in nursing to identify which nursing journals they read most often and which nursing journals they assign most often to doctoral students. Five nursing journals were consistently ranked 1-4 as being read and assigned most often. These journals are: Nursing Research, Advances in Nursing Science, IMAGE: Journal of Nursing Scholarship, Research in Nursing and Health, and Western Journal of Nursing Research. Implications for editors, reviewers and research consumers are discussed.

When your manuscript is rejected.

Anyone who submits a manuscript for peer review is at high risk for experiencing rejection. Dealing with rejection is not easy. Sometimes major revisions, based on the reviewers' comments, can help salvage the manuscript. The only way to avoid rejection is to avoid submitting one's work. Even when rejections are received, one has the satisfaction of at least knowing that an effort was made; remember, some people never get that far. Persistence in trying can eventually help one to become a better writer and, thus, a contributor to the literature of nursing.

Values, knowledge, and attitudes about acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in rural adolescents.

Adolescents are prone to participate in high-risk behaviors, thus placing themselves at greater risk for human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. This study describes knowledge, attitudes, values, health locus of control, and risk-taking potential of 1,048 rural adolescents. The subjects had more correct knowledge than incorrect knowledge about human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The adolescents' personal values of an exciting life and pleasure were related to their likelihood of participating in high-risk behaviors; their attitude score was negatively related to their likelihood of participating in risk behaviors.

Graduate education for nursing students who have English as a second language.

Working with international students, especially those who have English as a second language, is a challenge for any educator. To date there has been little information in the nursing literature that is helpful to faculty who teach and/or mentor these students. The shared personal knowledge gained from participation in planning and providing educational options for foreign students and the empirical cognizance made possible from several years of guiding the program of studies of these students is offered as a beginning framework to other faculty. The need for research in the area is identified.

Rural women's knowledge of and attitudes toward acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

We surveyed the knowledge of and attitudes about acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) of 236 women living in a rural community. The design of the study was descriptive, using the AIDS Knowledge and Belief Survey. There was a significant positive correlation between attitude scores and knowledge scores. Women who had read about AIDS had significantly higher knowledge scores than women who had not read about AIDS, but there were no significant differences between the attitude scores of women who had and had not read about AIDS.

Reva Rubin revisited.

A review and analysis of Reva Rubin's major publications is presented. Rubin's contributions to maternity nursing are acknowledged and questions concerning the applicability of Rubin's theories to current practice are raised. Nursing implications are drawn for contemporary nursing practice, and areas for future research are identified.
