The influence of surface chemistry on implant interface histology: a theoretical basis for implant materials selection.

A theory is proposed stating that an ideal implant material must have a dynamic surface chemistry that induces histological changes at the implant interface which would normally occur if the implant were not present. Evidence for the validity of this theory is provided with a series of bone-implant studies which result in stable interfacial osteogenesis under specific implant surface chemistry conditions. Insufficient or excess surface ion concentrations produce negative osteogenesis and fixation results. Implantation of osteogenic implants in soft tissues also produces undesirable histological responses as proposed in the theory. A variety of surface chemical analyses of the implant are reviewed which provide a scientific basis for the implant surface theory.

Demonstration of immunoglobulin containing deposits in glomerular basement membrane in experimental chronic serum sickness using horseradish peroxidase labelled antiserum.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labelled antibodies were used in rabbit glomerulonephritis to obtain localization of immunoglobulins in the glomerulus at a light and electron microscope level. Better localization of deposits was obtained with peroxidase labelled antiserum than with immunofluorescence at the light microscope level. Ultrastructurally, immunoglobulin localization was seen to correspond to the electron dense deposits demonstrated in and on the glomerular basement membrane by conventional microscopy.

Elastofibroma dorsi.

Two cases of elastofibroma dorsi are reported and the light and electron microscopic features analysed. The appearances suggest that the characteristic fibres and globules that stain as for elastin arise by denaturation of collagen. The fibres differ from the elastin of arterial wall, elastotic degeneration of skin, and pseudoxanthoma elasticum. The morphology and clinical behaviour indicate that elastofibroma dorsi is a reactive fibromatosis rather than a true neoplasm.

Compositional influence on the strength of dental porcelain.

This work compared the tensile strength of two glass compositions with published values of currently available dental porcelains. The influence of several variables, such as air and vacuum firing, firing temperature, surface roughness, immersion in water, and the inclusion of filler particles, on the inherent strength of the glass compositions is also discussed. The authors developed a glass frit having a tensile strength of 102.4 MPa as determined by the biaxial flexure technique. This value compares favorably with the reported strength of commercial brands of feldspathic porcelains. The strength of this glass was not significantly reduced as a result of surface abrasion or immersion in distilled water.
