Treatment of moderate or severe arterial hypertension with losartan.

Losartan is the first drug of a new class antihypertensive drags--Angiotensin II receptors antagonists. According to the data in the literature the drug shows a very good efficiency and tolerability. Fifteen patients at the average age of 48.9 are the object of this study. Our study establishes considerable lowering of the systolic BP with 15.9% and of the diastolic BP with 20.3%. No considerable effects on the hematopoiesis, the carbohydrate and the lipid metabolism, and the renal function were observed during treatment with Cozaar.

NOTE

The influence of different counterions (F-, Cl-, Br-, I-) on the electric surface properties ("permanent" dipole moment and electric polarizability) of beta-FeOOH ellipsoid particles in dilute aqueous dispersions is studied by electric light scattering method and electrophoresis. An additional longitudinal permanent dipole moment appears with the increase of ionic strength for all added counterions, but is most pronounced in the case of I- ions. The additional orientation moment is most likely due to the distortion of the counterions' distribution close to the particle surface.

Restriction endonucleases induce chromosomal aberrations in barley.

The clastogenic ability of the restriction endonucleases (MspI, HpaII and HaeIII) in germinating seeds of reconstructed barley karyotype was assessed. An effective induction of chromosomal aberrations after restrictase treatment was observed. The frequency, types and cell-cycle dependence of the observed abnormalities are discussed in relation to the distinct characteristics of the enzymes and the features of the plant genome. The capacity to induce aberrations was not significantly influenced by the nature of the double-strand breaks (blunt- or cohesive-ended); however, it was dependent on the methylation status of the plant DNA. The restriction enzymes displayed an S-independent mode of action revealing the transition between G1 and S as the most sensitive stage of the cell cycle in barley for induction of chromosomal damage.

[Hemophilia B and aortocoronary bypass].

We describe a case of a patient with moderate hemophilia B, undergoing CABG. Substitution therapy was realized with factor IX concentrate (Bebulin-TIM4-IMMUNO). We discuss which of the following factors: hypothermia, hemodilution of heparinisation has a substantial role in alteration of FIX coagulant activity during cardiopulmonary bypass.

[The basic principles of the antibiotic therapy of burn patients].

Proceeding from many years experience with antibiotic treatment of bacterial infections in burnt patients, accumulated in the Section of Burns and Plastic Surgery, and pertinent literature reports, the basic principles of antibacterial therapy in this contingency of patients are set forth. A detailed protocol is presented, based on: 1) presence of clinical and laboratory evidence of infection and its location, and the most likely causing agents involved, 2) bacteriological data on the commonest causing agents of local and systemic infection in burns, and their sensitivity to antibiotics, 3) duration and surface, deepness and location of the burn injury, and 4) spectrum of action, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and side effects of the various groups of antibiotics, consistent with the age and concomitant diseases of the patients. A number of antibiotic constellations in cases presenting sepsis where resorting to "blind" therapy is necessitated, are recommended. It is underscored that the protocol suggested is open for modifications, and also that antibiotic therapy efficiency may be anticipated only when combined with adequate infusional and operative management.

[Immunoglobulin receptors of antigen-stimulated B-lymphocytes].

Albino mice were immunized with a suspension of sheep erythrocytes. On the fifth day following treatment the animals were killed and B lymphocytes were isolated from their spleen tissue. Both the complement-fixation test and the immunofluorescence method were employed to specify the number of immunoglobulin receptors on the membrane surface, and disk electrophoresis was used to separate the protein fractions of the solubilizates from their membranes. Normal lymphocytes, obtained from unimmunized animals, were used as controls. It was established that: 1. The immunoglobulin receptors gradually decreased in number is the stimulated lymphocytes. On the fifth day of immunization their amount was 6.6 times lower than that in the normal lymphocytes. 2. The receptors in the normal lymphocytes proved diffusely scattered on the cell surface, while those in the stimulated lymphocytes were concentrated into clusters at one of the cell poles. The biologic nature of the observed changes is briefly discussed. It is concluded that the mature antibody-producing cell is not dependent on the antigen.

[Changes in the amount of sialic acids during B-lymphocyte blast transformation].

Albino mice were immunized with a suspension of sheep erythrocytes. On the fifth day the animals were killed and B-lymphocytes were isolated from the spleen tissue. Aminoff's method was employed to determine the amount of sialic acids. Normal lymphocytes, obtained from unimmunized animals, were used as controls. It was found that stimulation raised the level of sialic acids by about 26 per cent as against their amount in normal limphocytes. The biologic character of the phenomenon observed is briefly discused, stating that it corroborates the concept that the binding of immunogenic agents with the cell occurs in a "stimulated" status.

[Adenosine triphosphatase and 5'-nucleotidase activity of antigen-stimulated lymphocytes].

Albion mice were immunized with a suspension of sheep erythrocytes. The animals were killed on the fifth and eighth day, and lymphocytes were taken from their spleen tissue. Studied was the activity of the adenosinetriphosphatase and 5'-nucleotidase in the lymphocytes during the immunogenesis in terms of their link with the cellblast transformation. The enzyme activity was determined by the method of Emmelot, Bos, and the extent of the blast transformation was expressed by the so-called blastogenic index (BI). It was found that: 1. During immunogenesis 32% of the lymphocytes in the mouse spleen are transformed into blast cells. 2. The activity of 5'-nucleotidase drops, and that of adenosinetriphosphatase rises. 3. Parallelism exists between the extent of the lymphocyte blast transformation and the level of adenosinetriphosphatase. 4. The drop in the activity of 5'-nucleotidase is considered to be the aftermath of the drop in the intracellular adenosinetriphosphatase content.
