On the professional socialization of black residents in psychiatry.

Residents in psychiatry, in addition to acquiring technical knowledge and skills, undergo the process of professional socialization during which they assimilate the values, attitudes, and normative behavior of their professional group. The socialization of any group of trainees is fostered by the clarity and precision of a socialization structure and by the visibility and contribution of certain specific agents of socialization. The authors outline the areas of this process that create problems for black residents in psychiatry and suggest alternatives to the present experience encountered in most training programs.

[Short rib-polydactyly (author's transl)].

A new case of short rib-polydoctyly, Saldino-Noonan type is described. The authors make a differential diagnosis between another forms of neonatal chondrodysplasias and point-out principal features of this entity.

Chondrodysplasia Punctata↗

[Mesenterial lipoma in a child (author's transl)].

A rare case of a 16-month old infant with a mesenteric lipoma is presented. Symptomatology, diagnosis and surgical approach are discussed. Authors make a review of previously reported cases in the infant age.

[Dynamic and plastic expression as a method of accident prevention during infancy (author's transl)].

Authors review the importance of fostering suitable methods at infancy, as a prophylaxis of accidents at such stage in life. They propose the use of plastic expression handed-out as a sequence of pictures, ordered in the form of a story or tale, rigorously studied from the psychological point of view and which limelights the most frequent risks. Likewise they value the importance of dynamic methods of expression and summarise their experience with puppet theatres. A prototype show is described and psychological result evaluation analized.

Screening for organic mental syndromes in the medically ill.

A brief mental status questionnaire adapted specifically to diagnose diffuse organic diffuse organic mental syndromes on busy medical words is developed and tested for reliability and validity. When the 30-item questionnaire was given to 17 medical patients diagnosed by consultation spychiatrists as having a diffuse organic mental syndrome, all score 20 or less. With hospitalized psychiatric patients the questionnaire was able to differentiate between the "functional psychoses" and diffuse organic brain syndromes. When administered to 69 consecutive medical admissions, fully one third showed marked cognitive limitations. A sample of normals suggested that results may be contaminated by severe cultural or educational variances. We discuss the role of cognitive dificiencies in medical patients, and suggestions are made regarding the broad usefulness of this questionniare to a medical service.

[Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in children (author's transl)].

Based on their experience of 6 cases of idiopathic hypertrophic cardiomyopathy among 1800 hemodynamic studies, the authors discuss some features of this entity, and print out the phonomecanocardiographic datz leading to the suspicion of the diagnosis, and the angiocardiographic findings which confirm it. Some speculation is made on the probable congenital and hereditary etiology of the disease, and finally, the main therapeutic measure are considered.

Interactions between the pituitary, thyroid and adrenal cortex during acute exposure to cold or to electric shocks in the rat.

In intact rats acclimated to 25 +/- 1 degrees C, acute exposure to cold resulted in simultaneous stimulation of TSH and ACTH secretion. The plasma TSH response to cold was identical at temperatures varying from +14 to -10 degrees C, whereas the adrenocortical response increased proportionally to the severity of cold. Acute stimulation of ACTH secretion by exposure to a stressful situation (electrical shocks) did not alter the TSH response to cold. Conversely, acute blockade of the pituitary-adrenocortical response by dexamethasone treatment did not enhance the TSH response to cold. Chronic stimulation of ACTH secretion resulting from adrenalectomy did not interfere with the TSH response during subsequent exposure to cold. However, a reduced adrenocortical response to cold was observed during chronic hypersecretion of TSH resulting from previous thyroidectomy. These findings do not support the hypothesis of an inverse relationship between TSH and ACTH secretions during acute cold exposure, but rather suggest that these secretions are independent.
