[Histological examinations of persisting milk teeth (author's transl)].

In twelve patients aged 13 to 24, histological examinations of twenty persistent milk teeth (with persistency having been due to aplasia of permanent teeth) showed that root resorptions are possible in such cases too. Cellular resorption results in the root being decomposed lacunally or linerly, respectively. The formation of osteodentin, which is a result of the phase of apposition and which is taking place in the pulp and along the surface of resorption, respectively, is considered a characteristic concomitant phenomenon. However, this tissue does not cause "true ankylosis". Accordingly, use of the term "ankylosis" to describe such cases is questionable. The author, on the strength of the results obtained in these studies, believes that root resorption of persistent milk teeth is a pathological process in the case of congenital absence of permanent teeth.

[Growth phenomena of jaw ameloblastomas].

Jaw ameloblastomas produce most frequently (62%) multilocular translucences. An unilocular translucence was observed in 28% of the cases. In both forms, secondary cysts were present. This radiomorphologic finding is of pathognomonic value. Conchiform or finger-shaped translucences were seen in 10% of the cases. Such radiographic changes were observed in ameloblastomas arising from the oral mucosa. The border of the radiolucent area was always sharply defined and had a lobulate or wreathed form. The ameloblastoma spreads in an expansive or invasive way. The bone destruction is in all probability caused by the acid phosphatase activity of the tumour. Bone transformation occurs simultaneously with bone destruction and might be regarded as a morphologic sign of the defence mechanism.

[Incidence and distribution of tumors of the mouth cavity. 30 year's experience at the Clinic of Maxillofacial Surgery, Budapest].

The present paper deals with the qualitative and quantitative distribution of tumour patients treated at the Budapest Clinic Maxillofacial Surgery in the east 30 years. These patients suffered from: odontogenic tumours, 135 cases: non-odontogenic benign tumours, 1219; and malignant tumours, 1238. Compared to previous data, the present findings evidence the upward trend of the frequency of tumours and of the malignant ones among them.

Occurrence of epithelial dysplasia in oral leukoplakia. Analysis and follow-up study of 12 cases.

The histologic material of 500 leukoplakia patients was analyzed in order to define the characteristics of epithelial dysplasia and to correlate the findings with the clinical data. Epithelial dysplasia was found in 120 cases (24 per cent) and was graded as mild, moderate, or severe. The occurrence of dysplasia was highest in the group of erosive leukoplakias. The majority of the severe dysplasias were found on the tongue and lips. Follow-up studies on sixty-eight leukoplakia patients with histologic dysplasia revealed carcinoma in nine cases (13.2 per cent) during the mean observation period of 6.3 years. Leukoplakias of the tongue showed the highest incidence of malignant change.
