[Ketotifen in the treatment of pediatric atopic eczema].

Clinical effectiveness of ketotifen was evaluated in 15 children, aged 1-3 years, affected by atopic eczema likely due to food allergy. The study, lasting 15 weeks, was divided, according to the protocol, as follow: week run-in period with a restrictive diet; 8 week ketotifen therapy (the first 2 weeks with restrictive diet and the following 6 with free diet); 4 week follow-up phase with free diet. The adherence to treatment was complete in 11 patients; in 6 children symptomatology disappeared, 4 patients had fair improvement. The drug lasted only partially for a maximum 2 week period following the withdrawal. Side-effects (vomiting, enuresis, night restlessness) were moderate, short lasting and did not require the interruption of the protocol. Moreover, a mean 1 kg body weight increase was noticed.

[Psychological aspects of the epileptic child and his relationship to his family environment].

Intellectual development and psychic problems were examined in thirty children, suffering from center - encephalic and focal epilepsy. Two parameters were taken into consideration: social insertion and family adaptation. Intellectual development was evaluated with the Terman-Merril test. At the same time, correlations between the epileptic form, the age of the onset of the seizures and their frequency, the precocity of therapeutic treatment were considered. The intellectual development and the personality were good in 23,7%, when the subjects were enclosed in valid familiar environment and when clinic disappearance of seizures was rapid; these aspects were compromised in 76,3%, when emotively valid family substractum was deficient and therapy was tardily started and barely efficient. On the basis of these data Authors affirm the importance of the precocity of therapy and the emotively valid substratum for preventing the behaviour disturbances in epileptic patients.

[Therapy of bronchospasmic crisis of childhood with aminophylline].

We tested a new product containing aminophylline with 1,56% alcohol as therapy of bronchospasm in childhood to evaluate therapeutic activity, tolerance and adverse reactions. Authors confirm the usefulness of this product in childhood but dosage must be individualized with monitoring of theophylline blood levels.

[Children and illness].

The authors examined the psychologic reaction on the behavior of 60 children, of 5 to 14 years, affected by acute or chronic illnesses, talking to them personally, and examining 80 free subject drawings made by the ill children. On the basis of the obtained data it is possible to state that every aspect of the disease acquires for the child a different meaning in connection with their own experience, and the psychic development stage and the emotional atmosphere, surrounding them.

Auxological and biochemical parameters in assessing treatment of infants and toddlers with congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency.

We studied height velocity (HV), bone age progression (delta BA/delta CA), urinary pregnanetriol (PT) and plasma 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17-OH-P) during the first years of life in 12 patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency, treated by cortisone acetate. In the well-controlled phases normal growth rate (SDS between -1 and +1), satisfactory bone age progression (delta BA/delta CA < or = 1) and no clinical sign of poor treatment were found; in the undertreatment phases enhanced growth rate, rapid bone age progression and, in some instances, signs of virilization were found; in the overtreatment phases, reduced growth rate was the only sign of poor treatment. Hormonal values were only weakly correlated to therapeutic control. Therefore, growth rate evaluation can represent the best method of monitoring treatment in very young patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency.

Congenital hepatic dysplasia from cytomegalovirus.

The Authors report on a case of liver dysplasia in a four-month-old infant affected by prenatal cytomegalovirus infection. Immunologic, histologic and ultrastructural studies suggest an embryopathic origin of the lesions.

Evaluation of the efficacy of oral cromolyn sodium or an oligoantigenic diet in children with atopic dermatitis: a multicenter study of 1085 patients.

One thousand eighty-five children with atopic dermatitis were enrolled in a multicenter study to evaluate the efficacy of 4 weeks of oral sodium cromoglycate or 4 weeks of a restricted diet. One thousand-eleven children (93%) concluded the study. At the end of the trial there was a significant improvement in skin lesions in the two groups: 61% of the patients in the sodium cromoglycate group and 69% in the restricted diet showed a significant improvement in atopic dermatitis. We concluded that, at least in our experimental design, both sodium cromoglycate and a restricted diet are equally effective in atopic dermatitis.
