Situational interest in physical education: a function of learning task design.

Situational interest is the appealing effect of unique characteristics students recognize in a learning task during interaction with the task. It occurs when a learning task gives the learner a sense of novelty and challenge, demands high attention and exploration intention, and generates instant enjoyment during the person-task interaction. In this study, a repeated measure research design was used to examine the effects of task design on situational interest and the extent to which the effects were mediated by gender, grade, personal interest, and skill levels. Middle school students (N = 242) evaluated situational interest of four learning tasks with different cognitive and physical demands after having experienced the tasks in their physical education classes. Analyzed data showed that cognitive demand of a learning task played a critical role in generating situational interest. Grade levels, gender, and personal interest mediated the effects of task design on situational interest. But these mediation effects seemed rather limited. Physical skill levels had little influence on the effects of task design on situational interest. The findings seem to suggest that to enhance interestingness of a physical activity task, an option for physical educators may be to increase cognitive demand rather than reduce physical demand.

Directional bonding in compacted microcrystalline cellulose.

The mechanical properties of compacts of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and silicified microcrystalline cellulose (SMCC) were evaluated by tensile testing, diametric compression testing, and compression testing. For tensile and compression testing, cubic specimens were carefully machined from MCC and SMCC compacts, and the tensile and compression strengths were evaluated both normal and parallel to the compaction direction. The cubic tensile strengths were compared to values obtained from the diametric compression test. The results obtained using the diametric compression test suggested compacts of SMCC exhibit greater strength than those of MCC. In addition, the cubes machined from compacts of MCC and SMCC exhibited directional strength; the direction normal to the compaction direction display ed the greater tensile strength, and the parallel direction had greater compression strength. The diametric compression test afforded strength values with reduced spread compared to the values collected from the cubic tensile test, suggesting that the errors involved in collecting diametric compression test data of compacts are less than those for the cubic tensile test. Analysis of the cubes using X-ray diffraction (XRD) suggested that they display directional structural anisotropy, with the direction normal to the compaction direction being more crystalline than the parallel direction. However, it is not clear whether the difference in the directional strength is solely a consequence of the increased crystallinity or a culmination of crystallographic and mechanical keying effects.

Exercise capacity in adult patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries.

OBJECTIVE: To examine cardiopulmonary values, static lung function, and ejection fraction in adult patients with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (CCTGA). PATIENTS AND METHODS: 41 patients who had undergone static lung function testing and cardiopulmonary exercise tests with measurements of ejection fraction were identified at the Toronto Congenital Cardiac Centre for Adults. RESULTS: Aerobic capacity in patients with CCTGA was severely diminished, varying from 30-50% of the results achieved by healthy subjects. Normal values of right ventricular and left ventricular ejection fraction were found. However, the systemic right ventricular ejection fraction increased by 2% from rest to exercise, as opposed to the expected > 5% increase in a healthy population. The pulmonary left ventricular ejection fraction decreased by 2% at peak exercise. CONCLUSION: Diminished values of heart rate, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV(1)), forced vital capacity, and systolic blood pressure compared to the predicted values may contribute to the reduced maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2)max) found in patients with CCTGA. In addition, a limited increase in systolic right ventricular ejection fraction and a decrease in pulmonary left ventricle contractility suggest a dysfunction of both ventricles.

Smoking cessation in China: findings from the 1996 national prevalence survey.

OBJECTIVES: To describe patterns of smoking and smoking cessation in China within the context of the stages of change model, using data from the 1996 national prevalence survey. DESIGN: A cross sectional survey was carried out using the 145 preselected disease surveillance points, which provide a representative sample for the entire country. A standardised questionnaire on smoking was interviewer administered. SETTING: The country of China. SUBJECTS: 122,220 people aged 15-69 years. MAINTENANCE MEASURES: Smoking cessation patterns, as defined by smoking status (current or former) and stage of change (precontemplation, contemplation, and action). RESULTS: The sample included 45,995 ever smokers of whom 4336 had quit. About 72% of current smokers reported not intending to give up their smoking behaviour, and about 16% of current smokers said they intended to do so, but have not taken any action. Of all ever smokers, the percentage of former smokers was 9.5%, and 12% of current smokers had quit at least once, but relapsed by the time of the survey. The patterns were similar in men and women with regard to the stated intent to quit. Among males, the percentage of former smokers increased with age but the percentage intending to quit was constant at about 15% across age strata. The most common reason for quitting was illness. Participants with a university education were more likely to have made an attempt to quit. CONCLUSIONS: The percentage of smokers contemplating quitting was low in China in 1996. The study shows that smokers in China must be mobilised to contemplate quitting and then to take action.

Nitric oxide-independent effects of tempol on sympathetic nerve activity and blood pressure in normotensive rats.

The role of the sympathetic nervous system in 4-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl piperidinoxyl (tempol)-induced cardiovascular responses in urethane-anesthetized, normotensive rats was evaluated. Tempol caused dose-dependent (30-300 micromol/kg iv) decreases in renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA), mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), and heart rate (HR). Similar responses were obtained after sinoaortic denervation and cervical vagotomy. These responses were not blocked following treatment with the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine (2.6 mg x kg(-1) x min(-1) iv for 5 min) or the alpha2-adrenergic receptor antagonist idazoxan (0.3 mg/kg iv bolus). Idazoxan blocked the effects of clonidine (10 miccrog/kg iv) on HR, MAP, and RSNA. Hexamethonium (30 mg/kg iv) inhibited RSNA, and tempol did not decrease RSNA after hexamethonium. The effects of tempol on HR and MAP were reduced by hexamethonium. In conclusion, depressor responses caused by tempol are mediated, partly, by sympathoinhibition in urethane-anesthetized, normotensive rats. Nitric oxide does not contribute to this response, and the sympathoinhibitory effect of tempol is not mediated via alpha2-adrenergic receptors. Finally, tempol directly decreases HR, which may contribute to the MAP decrease.

Two isoforms of gonadotropin-releasing hormone are coexpressed in neuronal cell lines.

GnRH-I serves as the neuropeptide that regulates mammalian reproduction. Recently, several groups have identified in the brain of rodents, monkeys, and humans a second isoform of GnRH (GnRH-II) whose structure is 70% identical to that of GnRH-I. In this study we demonstrate for the first time human and mouse neuronal cell lines that express both GnRH-I and GnRH-II. Following the screening of several human neuronal cell lines by RT-PCR and Southern hybridization, we demonstrated that two cell lines, TE-671 medulloblastoma and LAN-1 neuroblastoma cells, coexpress messenger RNA encoding the two isoforms of GnRH. Nucleotide sequencing indicated that the complementary DNA fragments are identical to those of the known human GnRH-I and GnRH-II sequences. Extracts obtained from the TE-671 and LAN-1 cell lines as well as from the immortalized mouse hypothalamic GT1-7 neuronal cell line were found to contain the two isoforms of GnRH, which exhibited identical chromatographic properties as synthetic GnRH-I and GnRH-II, in HPLC followed by specific RIAs. Furthermore, double immunofluorescence studies demonstrated the two GnRH isoforms in LAN-1, TE-671, and GT1-7 cells. The identification of neuronal cell lines expressing both GnRH-I and GnRH-II provides tools for studying the differential regulation of gene expression and secretion and for studying the interaction between the two isoforms. Such studies may contribute to elucidation of the physiological functions of GnRH-II, which are still unknown.

Transcriptional regulation of the human GnRH II gene is mediated by a putative cAMP response element.

Human neuronal medulloblastoma cells (TE-671) were recently demonstrated to express the two forms of GnRH (GnRH-I and GnRH-II). We have used this cell line as a model system to demonstrate regulation of the human GnRH-II gene by cAMP. RT-PCR and Southern hybridization demonstrated that GnRH-II mRNA is strongly up-regulated ( approximately 6-fold) by (Bu)(2)cAMP. The concentration of GnRH-II that was released into the medium of TE-671 cells treated with the cAMP analog was significantly higher than that of the untreated cells. TE-671 cells that were stimulated by (Bu)(2)cAMP demonstrated morphological changes and strong immunoreactive GnRH-II staining in part of the cell population. After screening of the GnRH-II promoter sequence, we identified a putative cAMP response element consensus site. The GnRH-I and GnRH-II promoters were isolated by PCR using human genomic DNA and cloned into the luciferase reporter plasmid. By measuring the basal activity of the promoters that were transfected to TE-671 cells, we found a much stronger basal activity of the GnRH-II promoter compared with that of GnRH-I. Treatment of transfected TE-671 cells with (Bu)(2)cAMP resulted in a strong activation of the GnRH-II promoter compared with a modest activation of the GnRH-I promoter. To determine the functionality of this putative cAMP response element site, we mutated this site. TE-671 cells that were transfected with cAMP response element mutant constructs demonstrated a diminished basal activity of the GnRH-II promoter. Treatment of the transfected cells with the cAMP analog demonstrated a decrease to 0.03% of the activity of the mutated promoter compared with that of the wild type. These results clearly demonstrate the importance of the putative cAMP response element site for the basal activity as well as for induction of the GnRH-II promoter by cAMP.

Cell-cell adhesion in human fibroblasts requires calcium signaling.

In connective tissues, intercellular adhesion is essential for tissue morphogenesis, development and wound healing. However, the signaling mechanisms initiated by cell-cell adhesion in fibroblasts and that regulate it are not known. In this study we tested the hypothesis that intracellular calcium signaling is required to mediate intercellular adhesion between fibroblasts. Fura-2 or fluo-3 labeled human fibroblasts were used to investigate calcium homeostasis during intercellular adhesion. After contact with suspended fibroblasts there was a rise in cytosolic free calcium ([Ca2+]i) and multiple calcium oscillations in substrate-attached cells. Antibodies against the extracellular but not the cytoplasmic domain of cadherin induced a similar calcium response, indicating that these responses were initiated by cadherin binding. As shown by the near-plasma membrane Ca2+ indicator (Fura-C18) and by confocal microscopy of fluo-3-loaded cells, [Ca2+]i transients probably originated at sites of cell-cell contact. Cell-cell adhesion was dependent on both calcium influx through membrane channels and release of Ca2+ from internal calcium stores, because the calcium channel inhibitor LaCl3 or pretreatment of cells with thapsigargin significantly inhibited (>35%) cell-cell attachment. The [Ca2+]i changes induced by cell-cell adhesion were temporally correlated with increased recruitment of intercellular junctional proteins into the cytoskeleton and movement of GFP-actin to sites of cell-cell contact. [Ca2+]i responses induced by intercellular adhesion were essential for both junctional protein recruitment and the establishment of strong cell-cell contacts, as loading cells with BAPTA/AM significantly inhibited cell-cell adhesion and recruitment of cadherins and beta-catenin to the actin cytoskeleton. Actin depolymerization by cytochalasin D dramatically reduced cell-cell adhesion and recruitment of cadherins and catenin to the actin cytoskeleton. These results demonstrate that cadherin-cadherin interaction induces [Ca2+]i transients during cell-cell adhesion in fibroblasts, and these calcium signals regulate cell-cell adhesion through remodeling of cortical actin and recruitment of cadherins and beta-catenin into intercellular junctions.

An examination of situational interest and its sources.

BACKGROUND: Situational interest is articulated theoretically as a construct associated with five dimensional sources: novelty, challenge, attention demand, exploration intention, and instant enjoyment. AIMS: This study aimed to examine the influence of the dimensional sources on situational interest. It was hypothesised that the dimensional sources function differently to contribute to situational interest and that the influence of a source might be mediated by others. SAMPLE: Two samples of 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students were used in the study. There were 281 students (57% male, 43% female) in the first sample and 191 (47% male, 53% female) in the second. METHOD: Students in Sample A evaluated situational interest and the dimensional sources in tasks of analysing jogging and gymnastic stunts on video. Those in Sample B evaluated them in tasks of learning basketball. Correlation and regression analyses and path analyses were used to test the theoretical model. RESULTS: Instant Enjoyment determined situational interest. Exploration and Novelty had positive influences on situational interest via enhancing Instant Enjoyment. Challenge showed little influence. The path analyses for both samples confirmed the inter-dimensional mediation effects of the sources. CONCLUSION: The analysed data support the hypotheses. The dimensional sources had unequal influences on situational interest and the mediation effects among themselves at times strengthened or weakened each other's influences. The findings suggest that to increase situational interest, educators should offer students ample exploratory opportunities during student-task interaction that can lead to instant enjoyment for learning.

A randomized trial of controlled-release oxycodone during inpatient rehabilitation following unilateral total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Reliance on "as-needed" analgesia following total knee arthroplasty may lead to inadequate control of pain and delayed recovery of function. Preemptive use of controlled-release opioids may improve pain control, accelerate recovery, and reduce the need for inpatient rehabilitative services. This study was designed to determine whether controlled-release opioids enhance post-arthroplasty pain control and facilitate functional recovery during rehabilitation. METHODS: Fifty-nine patients admitted for inpatient rehabilitation following unilateral total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive OxyContin (controlled-release oxycodone) (twenty-nine patients) or a placebo (thirty patients) every twelve hours. Both groups could receive on-request, immediate-release oxycodone (5 mg every four hours). The dose of study medication was increased on the basis of the frequency of requests for immediate-release oxycodone. Measures of interest included pain ratings as determined with a visual-analog scale, changes in the range of motion of the knee and quadriceps strength, and improvements in selected Functional Independence Measure scores during the first eight physical therapy sessions. The duration of the hospital stay for rehabilitation also was compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Baseline demographic, clinical, and functional characteristics were similar between the OxyContin and placebo groups. Compared with the placebo group, the patients who received OxyContin reported significantly less pain as well as significantly greater range of motion of the knee (passive motion, p = 0.036; active motion, p< 0.001) and quadriceps strength (p = 0.001) by the eighth physical therapy session. The patients who received OxyContin also were discharged from the rehabilitation hospital at an average of 2.3 days earlier than the patients in the placebo group (p = 0.013). CONCLUSIONS: Preemptive use of controlled-release oxycodone during rehabilitation following total knee arthroplasty leads to improved pain control, more rapid functional recovery, and a reduced need for inpatient rehabilitative services.

Seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with lymphoma.

To determine the Helicobacter pylori (HP) seroprevalence in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and other hematological conditions. Sera were collected from 444 patients with NHL, Hodgkin's disease (HD), lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD), myeloproliferative disorders (MPD), and other hematological conditions. HP seropositivity was determined by ELISA and the results were compared among diagnostic groups HP seropositivity was observed in 168/444 (38%) of the total population. Higher seropositivity rates were associated with increasing age (p=0.001), and country of birth outside the USA and Canada (p=0.0001). Among the diagnostic groups, patients with NHL demonstrated the highest frequency (43%) and those with HD, the lowest frequency (20%; p=.026) of HP seropositivity. The differences among diagnostic groups remained statistically significant after controlling for country of birth (p<0.05), but not after controlling for patient age at diagnosis. The HP seroprevalence of G1 NHL was 55% compared to 40% for non-G1 NHL (p=NS). The highest rate of HP seropositivity (67%) occurred in gastric MALT lymphoma patients, although this did not reach statistical significance compared to the non MALT group (50%) due to small sample size. In conclusion, the rate of HP seropositivity in patients with MALT lymphoma in the USA appears to be lower than in Europe. Helicobacter pylori does not appear to be an important factor in other types of NHL of the G1 tract or elsewhere. Studies of HP prevalence should be controlled for country of birth as well as for age.

Identification of the prostate cancer micro-foci with chromosome 8p deletion at the tumor interface area by histopathological-FISH parallel examination.

We used a histopathological-fluorescence in situ hybridization (histo-FISH) parallel examination technique to identify the micro-foci of prostate cancer with chromosome 8p deletion at the interface area adjacent to the tumor. The archival paraffin embedded prostate tissue sections from 27 prostate cancer patients were evaluated. Seventy-eight percent of the patients showed chromosome 8p deletion in the tumor sections. Eight of the 27 patients (30%) had been found positive for tumor micro-foci with chromosome 8p deletion at the tumor interface area. There is a strong trend for patients with late stage tumors to have positive findings for tumor micro-foci at the interface area (p<0.002). Our data suggests that the formation of tumor micro-foci with chromosome 8p deletion and ploidy change at the interface area is a significant development in the advanced prostate cancer, and identification of these micro-foci may serve as a prognostic parameter in the clinical assessment of prostate cancer patients.

Cancer symptom control: feasibility of a tailored, interactive computerized program for patients.

This study evaluated the feasibility of an innovative computerized symptom assessment tool, SymptomReport, and a computerized, tailored education tool, SymptomConsult, in a sample of 41 outpatients with cancer. After patients completed the computerized programs, an audiotaped telephone interview was conducted to assess patients' impressions. The study found that patients required less than 40 minutes on average to complete SymptomReport. The mean acceptability score was high 11 +/- 2. The 12 patients who completed SymptomConsult did so in an average of 20 minutes. The majority of participants indicated that the computer programs were easy, enjoyable, and informative tools. Initial formative research supports further study of these feasible computerized programs.

Allosteric modulation of A(3) adenosine receptors by a series of 3-(2-pyridinyl)isoquinoline derivatives.

Allosteric modulators of A(1) and A(2A) adenosine receptors have been described; however, for the A(3) adenosine receptor, neither an allosteric site nor a compound with allosteric effects has been described. In this study, the allosteric modulation of human A(3) adenosine receptors by a series of 3-(2-pyridinyl)isoquinoline derivatives was investigated by examining their effects on the dissociation of the agonist radioligand, [(125)I]N(6)-(4-amino-3-iodobenzyl)-5'-N-methylcarboxamidoadenosine (I-AB-MECA), from the receptor. Several 3-(2-pyridinyl)isoquinoline derivatives, including VUF5455, VUF8502, VUF8504, and VUF8507, slowed the dissociation of the agonist radioligand [(125)I]I-AB-MECA in a concentration-dependent manner, suggesting an allosteric interaction. These compounds had no effect on the dissociation of the radiolabeled antagonist [(3)H]PSB-11 from the A(3) adenosine receptor, suggesting a selective enhancement of agonist binding. By comparison, compounds of similar structure (VUF8501, VUF8503, VUF8505), the classical adenosine receptor antagonist CGS15943 and the A(1) receptor allosteric enhancer PD81723 did not significantly influence the dissociation rate of [(125)I]I-AB-MECA. The effect of agonist on forskolin-induced cAMP production was significantly enhanced by VUF5455. When the subtype-selectivity of the allosteric enhancement was tested the compounds had no effect on the dissociation of either [(3)H]N(6)-[(R)-phenylisopropyl]adenosine from the A(1) adenosine receptor or [(3)H]CGS21680 from the A(2A) adenosine receptor. Probing of structure-activity relationships suggested that a carbonyl group is essential for allosterism but preferred only for competitive antagonism. The presence of a 7-methyl group decreased the competitive binding affinity without a major loss of the allosteric enhancing activity, suggesting that the structural requirements for allosteric enhancement might be distinct from those for competitive antagonism.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the kidney associated with Budd-Chiari syndrome in a 17-year-old girl.

Renal primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is a rare and highly malignant neoplasm of the kidney. We report the case of a 17-year-old girl with renal PNET that was complicated by Budd-Chiari syndrome. She was admitted due to abrupt left flank pain and gross hematuria. Abdominal sonography and computerized tomography (CT) disclosed a large hemorrhagic left renal mass and thrombus in the inferior vena cava (IVC). Left radical nephrectomy was performed and renal PNET with tumor rupture and tumor invasion into the IVC was diagnosed based on operative findings and histologic features. Tumor cells were positive for neuronspecific enolase, chromogranin-A, and vimentin but negative for cytokeratin, leukocyte common antigen, CD3, and CD20. The thrombus in the IVC extended into the right atrium and caused obstruction of the right and middle hepatic venous outflow, which was evident on follow-up CT scan 5 months later. The patient died due to hepatic failure and progressive cardiovascular compromise 6 months after surgery. This case demonstrates that renal PNET can be life threatening when the tumor thrombus extends into the IVC and causes hepatic outflow obstruction.

[Therapeutic effects of adenovirus-bcl-xs gene to the ascites tumor of nude mice model of human ovarian carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of adenovirus-bcl-xs gene on the ascites tumor growth inhibition and survival rate of nude mice with human ovarian carcinoma transplanted intraperitoneally. METHODS: Making an adenovirus-bcl-xs gene vector infected in JH293T cell and reproduced in it. After having detected the inhibitory potential of adenovirus-bcl-xs gene on NUTU-19 cell we use it to transfer intraperitoneally to ascites tumor model of human ovarian carcinoma transplanted in nude mice. Detected the ascites formation, the survival time and survival rate of nude mice with the human ascites tumour. The weight and toxic-adverse systemically effects of nude mice was observed and morphology of adenovirus was observed by electromicroscope and the gene expression was detected by immunocell chemistry. RESULTS: The adenovirus-bcl-xs gene could reproduce in JH293T cell and had inhibitory potential on NUTU-19 cell, the survival time of nude mice was longer and the survival rate was higher, and the time of ascites formation was retarted. There was no obvious alternation in the weight and systemic toxic-adverse effects observed. CONCLUSIONS: The data suggests that the transfer of adenovirus-bcl-xs gene to the ascites tumour of nude mice with human ovarian carcinoma could improve the survival rate of nude mice and retard the time of ascites formation. It may be a useful method of gene therapy in the treatment of ovarian carcinoma.

Genomic approaches to elucidating the pathophysiology of renal diseases.

The physiological and pathological processes of the kidney as a whole can now be analyzed with a molecular precision at a genomic-scale. Using massively parallel cDNA microarray technology, the mRNA expression of thousands of genes can be quantified simultaneously. The advantages of microarray analyses include the ability to examine the interaction of several genes or the entire genome in a single experiment. Bioinformatics approaches such as data mining through mathematical condensation of the massive gene expression profiles are essential for elucidating molecular and biological logic underlying gene expression programs. Genes that encode similar protein components are often coordinately regulated. Recent application of gene expression profiling to the normal human renal cortical tissue, experimental in vitro and in vivo models has shown that cellular activation is accompanied by changes of hundreds of genes in parallel. The databases of gene expression emerging from these studies will be used to interpret the pathological changes in gene expression that accompany a variety of human renal diseases.

[Systemic side effects of long-term treatment with low dose inhaled corticosteroids in children with asthma].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the systemic side effects of low dose inhaled Beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) in children with mild asthma. METHODS: 30 children with mild asthma were randomly divided into 3 groups to receive treatment with inhaled placebo (group A), BDP 200 micrograms/d (group B) and BDP 400 micrograms/d (group C) respectively. Bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR), height growth, bone mineral density (BMD), calcium and phosphate metabolism and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA) function were measured. RESULTS: Inhaled BDP of 200 micrograms/d and 400 micrograms/d reduced BHR in mild asthmatic children and there was no significant difference between two groups [log(PD20-FEV1)]:(2.04 +/- 0.47) micrograms to (2.70 +/- 0.13) micrograms in group A and (1.94 +/- 0.46) micrograms to (3.15 +/- 0.18) micrograms in group B (P < 0.01). Serum osteocalcin, calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, basic cortisol and BMD didn't change significantly after BDP treatment in three groups (all P > 0.05) [In group A, B and C, concentrations serum osteocalcin were (29 +/- 12) micrograms/L, (22 +/- 6) micrograms/L, (31 +/- 11) micrograms/L, serum calcium: (2.49 +/- 0.11) mmol/L, (2.39 +/- 0.28) mmol/L, (2.20 +/- 0.35) mmol/L, serum phosphate: (1.8 +/- 0.6) mmol/L, (1.7 +/- 0.7) mmol/L, (1.5 +/- 0.4) mmol/L, radius BMD: (0.44 +/- 0.02) g/cm2, (0.42 +/- 0.05) g/cm2, (0.40 +/- 0.10) g/cm2, ulna BMD:(0.35 +/- 0.04) g/cm2, (0.36 +/- 0.08) g/cm2, (0.32 +/- 0.07) g/cm2, serum alkaline phosphatase: (410 +/- 113) U/L, (337 +/- 99) U/L, (351 +/- 122) U/L, serum basic cortisol: (350 +/- 86) nmol/L, (407 +/- 199) nmol/L, (365 +/- 71) nmol/L, lumbar spine (L4-5) BMD: (0.64 +/- 0.06) g/cm2, (0.59 +/- 0.08) g/cm2, (0.62 +/- 0.09) g/cm2 respectively]. Height growth had a trend of reducing after BDP treatment though not reaching statistical difference. Height standard deviation score (SDS): 1.1 +/- 0.7 to 1.2 +/- 0.9 in group A, 1.3 +/- 0.7 to 1.3 +/- 0.9 in group B and 1.1 +/- 0.7 to 1.0 +/- 0.7 in group C. Serum cortisol after ACTH stimulation reduced significantly in group C [(621 +/- 199) nmol/L to (482 +/- 97) nmol/L, P < 0.01]. CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that 200 micrograms/d BDP can reduce BHR significantly and has no detected systemic side effects in mild asthmatic children, and 400 micrograms/d BDP can reduce serum cortisol after ACTH stimulation. The long-term dose of BDP should be controlled to be less than 400 micrograms/d in children with mild asthma.
