Acoustic neurinoma and posterior fossa meningioma. Clinical and CT radiologic findings.

Clinical and computed tomography (CT) findings of twenty-three patients with acoustic neurinoma (AN) and eleven patients with posterior fossa meningioma (PFM) are described. AN frequently (94%) presents with the complaint of hearing loss, while PFM often (60%) presents with non-specific pains in the head or neck. The CT characteristics of AN and PFM in this series were similar to those found in most previous publications. The maximal measured mean diameter of PFM (40.2 mm) was significantly larger than that of AN (26.4 mm). Hydrocephalus was apparently influenced by tumor location rather than by its size. It is concluded that diagnostic ability has been improved in cases of CPA tumors, but not in those of non-CPA PFM, probably because of the earlier clinical presentation of the former. Clinical efforts are still necessary to detect the smaller tumors.

Computerized tomography findings in posterior fossa lesions.

In 190 of 7000 brain CT studies performed between April 1978 and September 1984, abnormalities of the posterior fossa were found. Of these, 51.5% were primary tumors, 15.3% metastases, 12.1% vascular lesions and 5.8% congenital or developmental lesions. Frequencies, age and sex distribution and radiologic characteristics of the various posterior fossa pathologies are reviewed and discussed.

Computerized tomography findings in pediatric patients with posterior fossa lesions.

The posterior fossa (PF) is a common site of lesions in the brain during childhood and infancy. Sixty pediatric patients with PF lesions shown on CT scans are presented. The most common lesions (48.4%) were intra-axial tumors, such as astrocytomas, medulloblastomas, and ependymomas. The tumors were relatively large at the time of diagnosis. The largest were medulloblastomas (mean maximal diameter 45.6 +/- 9.7 mm). Other abnormal findings of the PF were congenital anomalies, vascular lesions, hypoplasia and atrophy. A common approach to PF lesions is offered, emphasizing the variability, the incidence, and the different CT features of the lesions.
