We describe a totally automated procedure for radioimmunoassay of choriomammotropin, in which all phases of the assay are automated in a single system ("Centria"). This system permits the simultaneous incubation and separation of many samples in a nonequilibrium assay, and measurements are obtained in less than 30 min. Results for clinical samples by reference radioimmunossay methodology and with the Centria system compared uniformly well: y=0.91x - 0.87;r=0.94. The coefficient of variation for samples run in duplicate on the same day was 5.2%, 7.4% for samples run on different days. The specificity, sensitivity, simplicity, and speed of this system makes it a useful new tool for kinetic, nonequilibrium immunoassay.
The incidence of antibodies against 9 arboviruses in ovine, bovine and human sera collected in Eastern Sicily was studied. A high incidence of antibodies was found especially against Bhanja virus in all sera and against Sandfly fever Sicilian in ovine sera only. The incidence was higher than that reported in 1971 for the western part of Sicily. These findings suggest an increase in the circulation of arboviruses in this area; the causes are briefly discussed.
A patient with diabetes mellitus and hypopituitarism developed the Somogyi effect that was characterized by insulin-induced hypoglycemia and rebound insulin-resistant hypoglycemia. This compensatory insulin-resistant hyperglycemia has generally been ascribed to the release of anterior hypophyseal hormones; however, our findings suggest that factors other than anterior hypophyseal hormones are involved.

Normal values were obtained for blood serum PBI, T3 index. T4, and cholesterol in a colony of pygmy goats (n equal to 55) of mixed sex and age. Serum PBI values averaged 8.1 plus or minus 1.2 mug/dl with no significant sex differences. The mean T3 index and T4 value were 1.1 plus or minus 0.1 and 7.2 plus or minus 1.1 mug/dl, respectively, with no sex differences. The mean serum cholesterol value was 90.0 mg/dl, with sex differences apparent. Serum cholesterol averaged 84.9 mg/dl (n equal to 44) for females and was significantly higher in intact males (97.4 mg/dl; n=8) and significantly lower in castrate males 69.2; n=6. There was a consistent and significant increase in cholesterol values with age in females, an unexplained phenomenon also observed in humans. There was no evidence of thyroid malfunction in the animals studied.
A solid-phase radioimmunoassay for measurement of generation angiotensin I (renin activity) in plasma is reported. The angiontensin I antisera were attached to diazotized arylamine and N-hydroxy succinimide controlled pore glass, and reacted with labelled and unlabelled angiotentin I for saturation analysis before and after one hour incubation. Chelating agents were used to inhibit the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II in vitro. The assay is accurate, rapid and reproducible.
Antibodies to angiotensin I-BSA were produced in two different animal species to compare their specificity, binding capacities, titers and costs. Also, the antibody response over substantial intervals of time following comparable immunization in different species was studied.

Serums from 4 species of deer and 1 species of antelope were analyzed for various components in order to define an animal disease model for sickle cell disease in people. Animal species included black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), sika deer (Cervus nippon nippon), fallow deer (Dama dama), and pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana). The mean serum values for total bilirubin, total protein, albumin, creatinine, urea nitrogen, and electrolytes were similar in all species and were in the normal range for human beings. Cholesterol and uric acid values for all animals were lower than those for people. Alkaline phosphatase values in the 4 cervid species were higher than in the pronghorn antelope. Values for glutamic oxalacetic transaminase were lower in the cervids than in the pronghorn antelope. Lactic dehydrogenase values were similar in the 5 species. High activities for glutamic oxalacetic transaminase and lactic dehydrogenase in the 5 species probably related to muscle mass and great muscular activity.
