The seroprevalence to Toxoplasma gondii (41.1%), rubella virus (88.2%), cytomegalovirus (86.0%), and herpes simplex virus (80.0%) has been evaluated in fertile women living in Catania (Sicily). The population group studied was divided into four age groups to quantify the risk of primary infection in each age group.
Nine hundred and seventy-four cavimetries were performed using Kurz's Cavimeter prior to the insertion of a MLCu375 IUD. In this trial, we studied the endometrial cavity length of these women. Results of the cavimetries were correlated to IUD complications to determine which uterine sizes were associated with IUD side-effects. The expulsion rate was higher for women with an endometrial cavity length equal to or greater than 45 mm (p < 0.01) for one and two years.
Six thousand four hundred and sixty-two Multiload IUDs were inserted (3606 MLCu375 and 2856 MLCu250). In this study, we determined the acceptance and safety of Multiload IUD use in different age groups. Results were analyzed according to the usual life table method. The pregnancy rate was higher with the users of MLCu250 than with the MLCu375 in a clear relation to age group. Expulsion and bleeding and/or pain rates were higher with younger women in both IUD types.
Animal models used to measure the effects of alcohol on lymphoid cells and their functions provide useful ways to evaluate the multisystem effects of this substance. The effects of ethanol ingestion on the function of murine peritoneal macrophages (M phi) was evaluated. Both the production of reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) and the ingestion of foreign particles (phagocytosis) were studied. Mice were pair fed ad libitum a nutritionally complete liquid diet containing 7% v/v ethanol or a calorically balanced control diet. Two regimens were employed for the administration of the diets. One regimen represented "binge" drinking (short term-4 days) while the other represented "chronic" consumption (long term-14 days). Following the short term administration of the diets, an increase in the respiratory burst (RB), as well as a decrease in phagocytosis, were observed with M phi from the ethanol fed mice. The decrease in phagocytosis, was noted using either in vitro or in vivo methods. Results observed after long term administration indicated no significant change in the RB or in in vitro phagocytosis between the ethanol and control groups. Phagocytosis measured in vivo, however, was decreased in M phi from ethanol fed mice following long term administration. These results indicate an alteration in murine peritoneal M phi function following short term an long term administration of alcohol.
The aneurysmal bone cyst is an enigmatic and misnamed lesion displaying variable etiopathogenic and histologic characteristics. The aneurysmal bone cyst may appear as a primary lesion or as a secondary lesion associated with other pathologic entities. This article presents a probable self-limiting lesion that provides an opportunity to present an approach to classifying aneurysmal bone lesions.
Impaired vascular responsiveness to angiotensin II is a common feature in human cirrhosis with ascites. The aim of this study was to investigate whether vascular reactivity to angiotensin II is also decreased in rats with carbon tetrachloride-induced cirrhosis and ascites and to assess the role of endogenous nitric oxide in this abnormality. Increasing doses of angiotensin II (from 31 to 500 ng.kg-1.min-1) induced significantly smaller increases in total peripheral resistance in conscious cirrhotic rats with ascites (n = 8) than in control animals (n = 9) at each dose tested. A reduced response to angiotensin II was also observed in vitro in aortic rings of rats with cirrhosis and ascites compared with that in control aortic rings (maximal response: 104 +/- 16 mg vs. 204 +/- 18 mg; p < 0.001). This in vitro hyporesponsiveness to angiotensin II in aortic rings of cirrhotic rats with ascites was reversed on endothelium denudation or nitric oxide synthesis inhibition with N omega-nitro-L-arginine but was not influenced by cyclooxygenase inhibition with indomethacin. In conclusion, this study shows reduced vascular reactivity to angiotensin II in carbon tetrachloride-induced cirrhosis with ascites and indicates that this abnormality is mediated by nitric oxide.
