Long-term magnesium supplementation in essential hypertension.

The main objective of this clinical trial was to evaluate the effects of magnesium pidolate (15 mmol/day) on blood pressure at rest and during sympathetic stimulation induced by cold, isometric and tilt test; peripheral blood flow has been evaluated by strain-gauge plethysmography. Fourteen mild to moderate hypertensives (8 males, 6 females, age range 40-60 years) were randomly given magnesium or placebo in a double-blind parallel clinical trial for 6 months. In the actively treated group magnesium urinary excretion increased from 5.3 +/- 2 to 7.7 +/- 2 mmol/24 h, and serum magnesium changed from 0.9 +/- 0.1 to 1.0 +/- 0.2 mmol/l. On magnesium, BP changed at rest from 156/97 +/- 12/4 to 149/90 +/- 8/3 mm Hg, during cold pressor test from 169/105 +/- 9/6 to 174/105 +/- 15/4, during isometric exercise from 170/107 +/- 13/9 to 170/105 +/- 20/6, and during tilt test from 149/96 +/- 11/6 to 153/96 +/- 17/7 mm Hg. Similar changes were observed in the placebo group. Peripheral resistances were 14.7 +/- 4 and 9.8 +/- 2 PRU before and after magnesium, respectively. These data indicate that long-term magnesium pidolate supplementation does not affect blood pressure at rest and during sympathetic stimulation, despite a slight, nonsignificant reduction in forearm peripheral resistance.

Activator Appliances

[Distalization of the upper second molar: biomechanics].

The Author shows a system to dystalize the second upper molars and, if necessary, the third upper molars. This system, easy to be adapted, is made up by a palatal bar inserted between the first upper molars, by a sectional and a 100 grams precalibrated open Sentalloy coil spring used as an active force.

Dental Stress Analysis

[Distalization of the upper second molar: clinical case].

The Authors showed a clinical case in which has been put on a distalizing system together with a palatal bar between the first upper molars, a sectional placed between the first and the second molar and a 100 g precalibrated Sentalloy coil.

Adult

[Evaluation of transverse and sagittal expansion during functional therapy and conventional mechanical therapy].

The Authors have analyzed the transversal and the sagittal dento-alveolar expansion in patients treated with functional therapy using the Frankel F.R. and with conventional orthodontic therapy. The expansion obtained can be superimposable so saying that with the functional therapy it's possible to have more trasversal and sagittal expansion it is not verified with this study.

Activator Appliances

[Distalization of upper molars: a new approach (biomechanical)].

The showed system has the peculiarity of having a coil spring as an active and continuous force. The anchorage is partly included into the system and only partly depends on the cooperation of the patient. The use of extraoral traction is optional, it is necessary only when an excessive molar tipping is noted. The system can be used in both symmetric and asymmetric distalization cases.

Dental Stress Analysis

[Distalization of upper molars: a new approach (clinical research)].

The Authors want to verify the effects of a new system of distalization of upper molars based on an active force of a coil-spring with an anchorage divided between the system itself and the cooperation of the patient. They evaluated cephalograms and casts of the patients examined. The purpose was to analyze the quantity and the quality of the distal movement; in particular they wanted to evaluate if this movement was a bodily one. Different parameters have been analyzed carefully and the results confirm that the distal movement has been significant and above all that it has been a bodily movement.
